Ukraine
Introduction [Top of Page] Background: Richly endowed in natural resources, Ukraine has been fought over and subjugated for centuries; its 20th-century struggle for liberty is not yet complete. A short-lived independence from Russia (1917-1920) was followed by brutal Soviet rule that engineered two artificial famines (1921-22 and 1932-33) in which over 8 million died, and World War II, in which German and Soviet armies were responsible for some 7 million more deaths. Although independence was attained in 1991 with the dissolution of the USSR, true freedom remains elusive as many of the former Soviet elite remain entrenched, stalling efforts at economic reform, privatization, and civic liberties. In Eastern Europe, between Poland and Russia, Ukraine also borders the Black Sea. Most of the country consists of fertile plains (steppes) and plateaus. The Carpathian Mountain range defines the country's extreme western border, while the smaller Crimean Mountains rise in the Crimean Peninsula in the south. Mount Hoverla in the Carpathians is the country's highest peak at 6,762 ft. A lowland region of wooded bogs and swamps, called the Poles'ye is located in the northern regions, although much land has been drained and cleared for agriculture. Ukraine's coastline, including Crimea , extends 2,780 km (1,730 mi). See a map of Ukraine The Carpathian Mountains are the backbone of Central and Eastern Europe, stretching across seven countries, and forming the bridge between Europe's northern forests and those to the south and west as well as being a vital catchment area for the whole region. The area receives twice the rainfall of surrounding areas and it is this freshwater that feeds the major rivers the Danube and the Vistula through to the Black Sea and the Baltic. More than 40 percent of Ukraine's water supply comes directly from the Carpathians Ukraine is an industrial and agricultural country rich in natural resources, primarily coal, iron ore, manganese, nickel and uranium.
