in you ardent, heartfelt love for the spirit of our mother-Ukraine, and let this love become a powerful incentive for turning it into a wonderful and rapidly developing country. Ivan Honchar
National Ukrainian culture had reached considerable heights in its development when its further progress was checked by the Russian imperial domination in the 18th- early 20th centuries. The Ukrainians were confronted with an urgent need of preserving their their ethnicity and national cultural heritage, keeping up traditions and searching for ways of regaining independence. In the first quarter of the 19th century a movement of establishing ethnographical museums began with an intention of preserving artefacts of decorative arts and everyday life of the past. Leading figures of Ukrainian culture, patrons of art, art collectors and philanthropists gradually accumulated impressive collections of Ukrainian art and everyday artefacts that had been used in the past. But a lot had been irretrievably lost. Damage to Ukrainian culture done in the russification campaigns launched in the Imperial Russia and by the Soviet regime was great indeed. World War II took its heavy toll of Ukrainian lives and inflicted a further heavy damage upon Ukrainian culture.

Geography and Population
The capital city of Ukraine is Kyiv with a population of about 2,6 million people. The cities of Kharkiv, Donetsk, Dnipropetrovsk and Odesa all have populations in excess of one million people. Ukraine’s population is over fifty million people. Kyiv happens to be the oldest town in Eastern Europe being at least fifteen hundred years old. The female population of Ukraine is larger than the male population by as much as eight percent. The ethnic make-up of the population: Ukrainians constitute 73%, Russians — 22%, Jewish — 1%, Poles, Hungarians, Greeks, Romanians and others account for the remaining four percent. The literacy rate in Ukraine is almost one hundred percent. Christianity in its several Orthodox denominations is the religion of the majority but there are quite a few Roman Catholics (particularly in the west of the country), Judaists and Muslims with a sprinkling of believers of other religions. According to the Ukrainian Constitution, State is separated from Church. The Verkhovna Rada - Ukrainian Parliament Political and Administrative System
Ukraine is a Republic. The Ukrainian Constitution defines it as a «sovereign, independent, democratic.» The territory of Ukraine is administratively divided into 24 Oblast’s, in most cases with the seat of each Oblast’ giving it its name (Kharkiv — Kharkiv Oblast’). The Autonomous Republic of Crimea has its own parliament and government.

The realization of this project, which has been in the making for many years, will no doubt be a superb achievement. However, before one can revel in the grandeur of space and modern trappings that will be in place in the new building, it must be remembered that a we are not constructing a new museum, but a new home for The Ukrainian Museum, a viable institution that has been serving our immediate and greater communities for twenty-five years, as well as supported by them.

Mother Hen Cross-stitch Embroidery 19th century ~ Ukraine This image was developed from the decorative border of a linen tablecloth. Hens and chickens are common motifs in Peasant art. On one level, this is owing to this bird's ubiquitous nature as a food source for eggs and the stew pot. On another, the chicken is regarded as symbolic of hope and rebirth, the hen's eggs an almost magical source of life and growth, the rooster's proud crowing at the break of day a spiritual awakening and celebration of on-going life. The Ukraine has a long tradition of decorated Easter eggs, and it was on these objects that the symbolism of different heritage/images, unique to Ukrainian culture, had been most explicitly schematized. KALYNA'S SONG
"Coteau Books is most grateful for the assistance we received from the Ukrainian Canadian Foundation of Taras Shevchenko in support of our novel Kalyna's Song by the first-time author Lisa Grekul. We were able to successfully publish and launch the novel, to a great deal of acclaim. What was particularly useful about the Foundation's support was that, as planned, it allowed us to do extended touring with the author to Edmonton, Calgary and Winnipeg most recently. We were able to do this additional promotion right at the time when it was announced that Kalyna's Song is a finalist for the Books in Canada/Amazon First Novel Award.
Once again, thank you for your ongoing support of Coteau Books publications. We look forward to sharing further successes with you in the future."

Therefore, all chapters of the Program of Actions of the new Government are somehow related to Ukraine’s interaction with the external world. Speaking about Faith as the basis of spiritual renascence of the people, we cannot but mention the formation of a new global image of Ukraine and its active foreign humanitarian policy. Justice means increased attention, including attention to the protection of rights and interests of Ukrainians abroad. Internal personal Harmony is impossible not only without harmony in relations between the human being and the state, but also without harmony in Ukraine’s international relations. The improvement of Life of each citizen of Ukraine is inseparably linked to the inflow of foreign investment and implementation of large-scale international projects.

Home Page About the College Declaration regarding the establishment of ECPUU Inaugurations of ECPUU ... Centre for Ukrainian Language and Culture About College The fall of totalitarian regimes in Central and Eastern Europe at the end of the 20th c. created new conditions for establishing mutual relations among the nations and states in this part of Europe. During the period from 1989 to 2004 the political and economic initiatives undertaken at all levels were based on cooperation, trust, and partnership. Despite complex historical issues, the changes implemented proved highly successful. With the enlargement of the European Union in 2004 and the accession of some Central and East European countries into the European Community, a new situation was established. On one hand, membership in the European Union crowned their European aspirations, but, on the other, was a considerable challenge for further enlargement of the European space of stability and welfare, giving rise to a need of finding a formula for the cooperation between the European Union and its new members and the countries of Central and Eastern Europe which have not yet entered the EU, and have thus become its Eastern neighbours. Ukraine, one of the largest countries in Europe, holds a prominent position among them; in fact, the longest Eastern border of the EU is with Ukraine. The Idea of the College
The European Ph.D. College of Polish and Ukrainian Universities is an educational institution founded by the Polish and Ukrainian Universities. The founding fathers included Maria Curie-Sk³odowska University in Lublin (Poland), the Catholic University of Lublin (Poland), Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv (Ukraine), Ivan Franko National University of Lviv (Ukraine), and the National University of “Kyiv-Mohyla Academy” (Ukraine). The principal aim of the College is to educate future Polish and Ukrainian elites involved in developing cooperation between the two countries with in-depth knowledge and understanding of idiosyncrasies and specific character of their neighbours. The European dimension in the mission of the ECPUU is no less important. The College intends to shape the European consciousness of young Poles, Ukrainians and other peoples in this part of the European continent to continue the task of the European integration.
