Alumni Club Alumni On Their Experience Latest from Alumni Alumni On Their Experience at Harvard Ukrainian Summer Institute HUSI offered me a uniquely gratifying opportunity to meet students from all walks of life and share intellectually and culturally enriching experiences both inside and outside the classroom. I will always treasure the friendships I made and the memories of evening seminars, musical events, field trips, and other social functions. In fact, I had such a wonderful time that I went back, and I must say that the second time was even more memorable than the first.
Andrew Hogan (USA), HUSI-88/89
My summer school experience opened up vistas that after many years had a wonderful impact on my life. It was energizing, intellectually compelling, a socially rewarding! No better way to spend a summer. Fr. Borys Gudziak (USA), Rector, Lviv Theological Academy. Ph.D., HUSI-77
The HUSI stands out as the most rewarding and most unforgettable experience I have had. Cool language, dynamic course syllabus, qualified instructors, supportive stuff if this is what you are looking for in a language program, you do not have to look any further. And as a wonderful bonus, you will also get a diverse extracurricular cultural program that not only immerses you completely into the world of the Ukrainians, but also makes the summer institute a very pleasurable and enriching experience. I am not just recommending this program, I urge everyone, and especially college and graduate students with serious ambitions, to put the HUSI on their priority list for this summer.

Program Description
Experience Russian and Ukrainian life, culture - past and present - in the beautiful and unique city of Kiev. Founded in 500 AD as the center for the Russian Orthodox Church, Kiev became the third largest city in the Soviet Union and today stands at the crossroads between Eastern and Western Europe. Kiev is famous for its spectacular cathedrals, opera houses, ballets, museums and theatres, as well as its nightclubs, casinos, fashionable shops, sidewalk cafes and stylish restaurants. Students will participate in discussions of Russian history and culture, and enjoy both organized activities and ample time to explore the city on their own. Highlights from recent trips included private musical performances, night-trips on the Dneper River, shopping along the "Andriev Descent," where artists well paintings and Ukrainian fold-art, exploration of the catacombs beneath the Pechersk Lavra Monastery, and the nightlife along the "Khreschatyk". Enjoy the temperate Ukrainian climate and inexpensive prices, in this world-class city where roughly half of its three million inhabitants speak English.
Lodging
Students will live with host families who provide breakfasts and suppers and play a significant role in introducing students to everyday life in Kiev. Up to three students may live with a given family, and all host families live within a short walk of one another so students are never far from the group.

Travel and Tourism A Win-Win For Ukraine
    By E. Morgan Williams
The Kyiv Post Kyiv, Ukraine Thursday, July 17, 2002
Realizing how much potential Ukraine has, it is frustrating to see how painfully slow the country has been to tap its vast resources for its own benefit and for the benefit of its people. One wonders when Ukraine will finally wake up, throw off the bonds and lies of the past, open its economic system and move into the future with a sense of vision and hope. Travel and tourism is a win?win situation any way one looks at it. The decision to develop a genuine travel and tourism industry could quickly return huge dividends. This large, beautiful country possesses many outstanding historic, cultural and scenic sites. With so much to see and do, it is time to promote Ukraine. That won’t be easy, though, since promotion is not a skill found in most of the nation, especially in government organizations. Ukraine is an exciting place waiting to be discovered by the world. Most of the world’s millions of yearly travelers and tourists have never been to Ukraine. As part of the Soviet Union, it was until eleven years ago basically a closed country, not really open and not allowed to have its own identity and share it with the rest of the world. Unfortunately, Ukraine still does not have its own tangible identity separate from Russia, and what identity it does have most times is not very positive. But all this should and can change over time if there is a concerted effort and a new vision by the public and private sectors to develop and promote the best Ukraine has to offer. Ukraine is still not really an open country.

Ukraine's Culture and Traditions Ukraine has been developing its own original culture since very early times of its history. There were periods when Ukrainian culture experienced considerable influences of other cultures, notably those of Byzantium and of the Vikings (in the medieval times of Kyivan Rus), but basically it preserved its general original quality. The Old Ukrainian language was used as Latin of Eastern Europe for a period of time. Though oral literature existed in the very early periods of Ukraine's history, written elite literature began to develop from the end of the 10th century, after the adoption of Christianity which gave a big boost for the development of culture in general. The churches of Kyiv - and their number - caused admiration of foreign travellers visiting the city in the 11th and 12th centuries. The eleventh-century Grand Duke Yarsolav the Wise founded a library which became one of the biggest in Europe, and promoted the institution of schools, including those for girls. In later centuries, literacy was widely spread in Ukraine. In spite of a turbulent and dramatic history, Ukraine has preserved a cultural constant from the early times of its existence. Book printing began in Ukraine in the 16th century and the first establishment of higher learning - the first not only in Ukraine but in the whole of Eastern Europe - Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, sprang up in the early 17th century.

Entering their community to find out about their use of language was made harder by this fact. Once there, however, we were approached by many vendors and local residents who told us their stories enthusiastically. Their stories revealed to us more than their native language but also a sense of who they were as a cohesive Ukrainian community. The community we studied was located around 2nd avenue and 9th street in Manhattan, New York. According to the U.S Census Bureau, there were approximately 11,527 Ukrainians living in New York City in 1990, a 12.2 percent increase from the 10,991 living in the area in 1980. We will introduce a few members of a particular Ukrainian community to best represent the larger Ukrainian population of New York City. They are: a man in his late 50s, employed at the butcher shop, Mr. Surma, the thrift store owner, a woman in her late 40s, owner of the restaurant, and a finally, a woman in her mid-60s, a former resident of this community. CHURCH SERVICES AND ITS ROLE IN THE COMMUNITY Wonderfully preserved and conveniently located behind the school, the church signifies its importance within the Ukrainian community. As a result of speaking with many in the area, we found that the church holds daily mass, which is mostly given in Ukrainian. While holding funerals, the church proceeds in both English and Ukrainian, so as to provide for everyone in attendance. We also found that the church offers a Saturday day school, promoting the growth of the Ukrainian language not only within the home but also within the community. Therefore, the children in the community are learning their native language. We also encountered an elderly woman, who had attended the school years ago; she noted that everyday before school at 8 AM, a service was held in the church, further emphasizing the importance of the church.

"The Formation of the Field of Ukrainian Contemporary Art: The Artistic Identity as Accommodation of Cultural Displacement and Marginality" by Pablo Markin email:pbmarkin@yahoo.com Presentation of Research Description of the Fieldwork in Ukraine Discussion of Theoretical Points It because of the above considerations that I have decided to include the personal narrative accounts of the condition of the field of Ukrainian contemporary art that I have been seeking throughout the time of my limited stay in Kyiv. Afterword My stay in Ukraine has left me with a lasting feeling that I should do something that would help to publicize Ukrainian contemporary art. It is by setting up an informal Internet project that I would like to serve the community of Ukrainian contemporary artists. The Web site that I am going to launch will be a bridging link between the international Ukrainian community, and possibly Jewish as well, and Ukrainian contemporary art, broadly conceived. Note: This modest article was written under the supervision of Dr. Don Seeman, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, whose encouragement has helped me to start my current research project on Ukrainian contemporary art. The present state of this text owes many improvements to the editorial suggestions of Alexander Dillon, Harvard University.
