Unit Four Regional Perspectives
Module Nineteen: East Africa
Teacher's Edition
PURPOSE
The purpose of Module Nineteen is to introduce students to the region called East Africa. East Africa is a vast area encompassing the countries of Sudan, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia, Djibouti, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Seychelles, and Comoros. As with other regions of Africa (see Introduction to Module Twenty: Regional Perspectives ), the countries that are included in East Africa can vary somewhat depending on whom you talk to. Some of the countries listed here can also fit into the regions of Central, Southern, or Northern Africa. But for the sake of this module, we will refer to East Africa as the twelve countries listed above. Activity One: The Region Called East Africa gives a brief overview of the history of the region, highlighting human origins, early kingdoms, trade routes, European colonialism, and postcolonial states. In this activity, students should get a sense of the rich history of this region and its connectedness to other regions in Africa and the rest of the world. The activity ends by discussing intra-regional political and economic organizations in East Africa, giving COMESA as one example. Activity Two: The Geography of East Africa deals with some of the geographical differences between East African subregions. The region of East Africa can be further broken down into three subregions—The Horn of Africa (Sudan, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia, and Djibouti), the Great Lakes Region (Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, and Burundi), and islands in the Indian Ocean (Seychelles and Comoros). The different vegetations, water availabilities, topographies, and population densities in these regions are discussed. Also, the impact of tourism on the East African enviroment is discussed.

Historical Background THETA (Traditional and Modern Health Practitioners Together Against AIDS and Other Diseases) was born in 1990 out of the initiative of 3 individuals - Dr. Sam Kalibala, a charter member of The AIDS Support Organization (TASO) in Uganda ; Rachel King, a public health specialist and traditional medicine researcher from the University of California at Berkeley , USA and Dr. Jaco Homsy, a Swiss doctor and HIV researcher at the University of California at San Francisco , USA . Together they shared the vision of actively involving traditional healers in the fight against AIDS. Their rationale was that these healers had already played a prominent role as care providers, educators and counselors for the majority of Ugandans. With the support of their respective organizations, the founders co-opted other colleagues, contacted healers and began to define practical approaches to implement their idea.
THETA's first clinical study (1992-94): THETA's first project was a clinical study to evaluate the effectiveness of herbal medicine for AIDS-related chronic wasting, chronic diarrhea and Herpes Zoster as alternatives to unavailable biomedical treatments.

Country Info Uganda Introduction Uganda General Data Uganda Maps Uganda Culture ... Uganda Time and Date Uganda History Back to Top Uganda was one of the lesser-known African countries until the 1970s when Idi Amin Dada rose to the presidency. His bizarre public pronouncementsranging from gratuitous advice for valuableard Nixon to his proclaimed intent to raise a monument to Adolf Hitlerfascinated the popular news media. Beneath the facade of buffoonery, the darker reality of massacres and disappearances was considered equally newsworthy. Uganda became known as an African horror story, fully identified with its field marshal president. Even a decade after Amin's flight from Uganda in 1979, popular imagination still insisted on linking the nation and its exiled former ruler. In part the result of its fairly smooth transition to freedom, the near absence of nationalism among Uganda's various ethnic groups led to a series of political compromises. The first was a government made up of coalitions of local and regional interest groups loosely organized into political parties. The national government was presided over by a prime minister whose principal role appeared to be that of a broker, trading patronage and development projectssuch as roads, schools, and dispensariesto local or regional interest groups in return for political support. It was not the strong, directive, ideologically clothed central government desired by most African political leaders, but it worked. And it might reasonably have been expected to continue to work, because there were exchanges and payoffs at all levels and to all regions.

The DRC war has the potential to explode into a regional conflict with grave consequences for the region because of the increasing number of countries it has sucked into it viz. Uganda, Rwanda, Zimbabwe, Angola and Namibia. Its linkages with the Angolan civil war aggravate an already critical regional instability that could plunge the SADC community and the Great Lakes region into a conflagration of very serious dimensions. The Angolan linkage is to be traced in the mutual accommodation between UNITA and the Rebel Alliance on the one hand and the DRC and Angolan government alliance which has coincided with the resurgence of the Angolan civil war between government and UNITA. Regional peace and security in the subcontinent and the State of the DRC after the war are inextricably bound with, and dependent on the resolution of the conflict in both the Democratic Republic of Congo and Angola. The credibility of the solutions in both countries will depend on the extent to which it meets the conflicting interests of all the players in the conflict.

Mission of the organisation
To promote the understanding, appreciation and conservation of nature
Key Activities
The current programme focuses on contributing to the understanding, appreciation and conservation of nature, using 2 approaches:
  • Conservation action through research, education, interventions and advocacy Promoting awareness and appreciation of natural history
Species, Sites and Habitat Conservation Action
  • Identification of IBAs and research on specific species, eg. the breeding success of Grey-headed Gulls. Also, jointly with MUIENR, implementing a project which is looking at other taxa to qualify the notion that IBAs are actually Important Biodiversity Areas. Stakeholder analysis highlighting the issues and challenges that surround IBAs as envisaged by the various stakeholders Leverage action for key sites and species: eg. we have acquired funding through the UNDP/GEF Small Grants for Musambwa Island, one of the IBAs in the Sango Bay area, and from the RSPB small grants for Nabajjuzi Swamp, another IBA. NatureUganda also hosts the African Species Working Group, which is currently developing species action plans for cross-border threatened species

Elidad Mulira, Senior and experienced politician (1991) Metaphorically speaking a constitution of a country is the soul of its members individually and statewise. Its dictionary meaning is, that anything: quality, property, which gives life and energy to anything. A good constitution will be reflected through whatever is done, and in whatever kind of life it is in that country. Give the country a wicked and muddled up constitution and the people under it will suffer wickedness, corruption, degradation etc. For the constitution to be the soul of the country, it must express the will of the people of that country objectively and justly, because consideration must be given to the claims of every party concerned. The making of a constitution is a sacrosanct undertaking. It is based upon the spirit of compromise, that of give and take, to all concerned. If this spirit is lacking, there cannot be a constitution because each one will stick to each one's individual rights and not to the rights of others, and hence there will be no agreement reached. And a lasting agreement is the fruit of frank discussion at the table of constitution-making. Therefore, to sit together and make a constitution calls for mature and developed attitudes, capable of discerning the issues at stake.

Next BRIEF HISTORY OF NAMILYANGO COLLEGE Namilyango College, the oldest boarding secondary school in Uganda, was founded on 23rd March 1902 by the Mill Hill Fathers. The missionaries had come to Uganda in 1895 to help break down the mentality of many of the peasantry, that 'Protestantism is English and Catholicism is French.' Thus with this in mind, the Mill Hill Fathers of British origin wanted to demystify this erroneous picture. In March 1902, Bishop Hanlon, the first Mill Hill Bishop in Uganda, started what was later to become Namilyango College, with a two-fold purpose; To train Catechists needed for evangelisation; To educate sons of Chiefs . The aims and objectives of the school were summarised in the motto ' Education for Responsibility ' which was adopted to guide the students and teachers alike. Later, the motto ' NISI DOMINUS ' was adopted to give the students a sense of religious devotion, in line with the strong Catholic Foundation of the school.
