To date 1.8 million people have died of AIDS in Uganda .An interview with a Ugandan HIV/AIDS worker 6th April 2004 gave a more optimistic picture of the efforts to combat AIDS in Uganda. Uganda's rate of new HIV infections has dropped dramatically from 18 to 9% between 1995 and 1998 (UNICEF data). Uganda is open in promoting an anti AIDS programme as this poster shows. Condoms are freely advertised to reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS. Some are distributed free but rural areas have lower usage than urban areas.

Norway extends so far to the north that distances can be long. The drive from Lindesnes in the south to the North Cape covers about 2500 km. However, these great distances allow the visitor to experience dramatic variations in the landscape. The road network is well developed and the majority of the roads have a reasonably good standard. Bridges over deep fjords and tunnels under towering mountains shorten the journey, and as you emerge from a tunnel you can admire the stunning and unexpected views of the ever-changing landscape. Norway is one of the few countries in the world with fjords – deep indentations in the coastline formed by the scouring action of glaciers millions of years ago. The train is a reliable and exciting way to experience Norway, and from the comfort of a modern carriage you can watch the beautiful countryside unfold. Thus the plan is to collect and analyse palaeoenvironmental data from sedimentary basins (papyrus swamps) that lie close to the excavated archaeological sites at Kasunga and Munsa and those at Ntusi and Bigo. This will help to reconstruct the environmental history of the region and thus revel the range of possible causal factors that may have led to the decline of these kingdoms in the great lakes region. Uganda has a tropical climate with two rainy and two dry seasons. Out of total area of 236, 040 square kilometer area, the arable area is 25.34 %. It has fertile and well-watered land with many lakes and rivers flowing across the country. Uganda has a population of 25.6 million (July 2003 est.) with an annual growth rate of 2.96 %. Agriculture is most important economic sector providing employment to 80 % of the labor force and accounting for 43 % of GDP. Importance of groundnut Production environment Production constraints The groundnut production in the country is constrained by various factors. As groundnut is grown mostly by small-scale farmers, the production is limited by low level of inputs. Production constraints include disease and pest incidence. The main diseases are rosette virus and early leaf spot. Groundnut rosette virus disease has been the most limiting factor of production ( Mahmoud et al 1991). Other diseases like bacterial wilt, rust, and stem rot are also diseases of importance. The major insect pests are aphids, thrips, grubs, and termites. Storage pests include

    overview

Communities in sub-Saharan Africa are particularly vulnerable to climate change and climate variability including extreme climatic events ( e.g., drought, flooding) due, in part, to reliance upon localised (untreated) water supplies and rainfall-fed agriculture. The impacts of climate variability and climate change on the availability of water resources in Africa (Figure 1) have been subject of very few studies and remain poorly resolved. Current research is focused in two areas:
  • deducing the hydrological and climatological implications of rapid deglaciation observed in the Rwenzori Mountains of East Africa; and

Water Torture: Power, Discipline and the Mortification of Northern Uganda

    Research Summary
Water plays a pivotal role in the processes that produce and reproduce both space and crisis in the region. As the key resource for physical and economic production and reproduction, adequate supplies of clean and safe water are critical for the maintenance of effective health and livelihoods under conditions of stress. A lack of such a supply quickly produces an environment in which levels of morbidity and mortality escalate rapidly, and in which the ability to engage in productive livelihoods activities is reduced significantly. Inevitably the production of these new urban spaces in northern Uganda has transformed not only the waterscape of the region, but also the relations between the water resource and its users. Water supplies, which had previously been adequate for a small, dispersed population, are now under extreme stress.
This thesis seeks to understand the nature of this 'crisis' by undertaking a comprehensive political-ecological analysis of concrete conditions of water scarcity as they are experienced by the inhabitants of the region. This approach proceeds from the assumption that the manner in which people access, or are deprived of water, reveals much about the way we live, and about the relations that exist between individuals, groups and institutions. It therefore seeks to illuminate the complex relations of power and domination that have produced, and continue to reproduce, the concrete conditions of marginalisation and deprivation that are made manifest in northern Uganda, and which are inscribed onto the bodies of the people of the region through complex mechanisms that are deeply biopolitical in nature.

Rockefeller grant to implement GIS training throughout Uganda
Ben Ofori-Amoah (pictured at left) , professor of geography and chair of the geography and geology department at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP), has been awarded a $356,000 Rockefeller Foundation grant to build GIS (geographic information systems) capacity throughout all of Uganda. The four-year grant is a collaborative effort between UWSP’s Geography and Geology Department, the Uganda Ministry of Local Government, Makerere University and the Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture located in Kampala, Uganda. "Our mission is to facilitate the use of GIS in local, regional and national planning in Uganda," said Ofori-Amoah. "In many ways it mirrors the local, regional work our faculty has been doing here in Wisconsin." GIS is a set of computer tools utilized for the collection, storage, retrieval, analysis and display of geographic data for information and decision-making purposes. It is being utilized in various UWSP departments, including natural resources as well as geography and geology.

    Geo-informatics for Watershed Management
Developments in the field of geoinformatics as well as development and implementation of modelling routines are going very fast. For most alumni a number of significant changes and developments will have occurred since they have finished their studies in the Netherlands . Recent developments in watershed management, modelling and GIS applications have most likely not reached many of ITC's alumni in developing countries. Especially in the Eastern African region, where research efforts through the Nile Basin Initiative have started to take root, keeping people informed of these developments is very important. The course will help to bring people up to speed with these developments, and it will stimulate them to develop educational and research activities in these fields. The subject matter that is central in the contents of the course has a direct link to the subject of natural disasters and disaster management (for example drought and flood monitoring) that bears great relevance to the Eastern Africa Region. Also for appropriate management of natural hazards and disasters a good understanding of water and watershed management is essential.
