WORLDGUIDE Introduction See Image Gallery Transport Money Essential Info RELATED Thorn Tree Forum Postcards Travel Links Travellers are flocking to Uganda's beautiful mountains, trekking opportunities and communities of mountain gorillas. Kampala is now the modern, bustling capital of a new Uganda, a country with one of the fastest growing economies in Africa. Insecure Areas Parts of Uganda should be considered off-limits due to a highly volatile security situation. Rebels in the north are responsible for many crimes against civilians. Ethnic conflict and banditry are common irritants in the northeastern Karamoja region and in neighbouring Katakwi district. Sections of the country's mountainous west bordering the Democratic Republic of the Congo previously considered insecure - including the Ruwenzori mountains and the Bwindi National Park - have been secured by the government, Nebbi district being the exception.

Country Info Uganda Introduction Uganda General Data Uganda Maps Uganda Culture ... Uganda Time and Date Uganda Culture Back to Top Uganda's rift valley foundation provides the nation with an alluvial plateau and plentiful lakes and rivers. Mountain peaks mark geological fault lines along its eastern and western boundaries and offer cooler temperatures and ample rainfall. This environment was peopled by successive waves of immigrants, some of whom displaced indigenous hunting societies during the first millennium A.D. Most of the newcomers eventually settled in the region that would become southern Uganda, and their evolving political and cultural variety contributed to conflicts that flared up over several centuries. These enmities still simmered in the twentieth century, but none of them seriously derailed the modernization process that was occurring in Uganda as it approached freedom in 1962. One of the challenges facing the National Resistance Movement government was balancing orthodox forces against pressures for modernization brought to bear by Uganda's growing educated elite. Women, too, have often been a force for modernization, as they demanded educational and economic opportunities denied under orthodox and colonial rulers. The focus of these pressures in the 1980s was Uganda's still strong educational system. Through education, people fightd to bolster the institutions that underlay civil society in an environment that bore scars from government neglect and abuse.

In March 2004, Uganda hosted a major inter-governmental conference to discuss a problem of a quite different nature: distribution and use of the waters of the Nile river system. To a greater or lesser extent, 10 countries, including Uganda, rely on the Nile for their water. This is a delicate and very important issue in this relatively arid region.

Economy

Agriculture dominates the Ugandan economy, accounting for half of total output and employing over 80 per cent of the workforce. Livestock rearing and a wide range of subsistence crops meet local needs; coffee is the main export commodity. Tobacco, tea, sugar cane and cocoa are also grown for export, and some processing of these is now carried out locally. The industrial sector produces textiles, cement, fertilizers, metal goods and a variety of household items. There are large deposits of copper and cobalt, the mining of which has been disrupted by civil wars and insurgency. In addition, there are known deposits of tin, tungsten, beryllium and tantalum ores. The relatively small tourism industry has suffered from the worldwide downturn since 2002. That year, Uganda received 350,000 visitors; the sector was worth US$250 million to the economy.

Mukwaya authored by Jude on 26. September 2005 at 01:36 You are confusing many issues here. First, citizenship and passports are two different issues. Also, the issue of colors of passports is not so crucial. When you go to a port of entry or exit, immigration officials are not concerned with the color of the passport but who the issuer of the passport is. In fact, the Canadian passport has a similar color to the Ugandan passport but that has no bearing on whether one would be allowed entry into a country or not.
The government does not need to introduce any more passports. Just introducing more categories and colors does not mean that loopholes would be closed. The loopholes can only be reduced by making it difficult to counterfeit the passport. Foreigners do not require passports of a country in which they are aliens. They need visas. On the issue of the Green Card verses the American passport, the green card is a proof of permanent residence and not a passport or a travel document. When you become a citizen, you get a certificate of Citizenship not a passport. You apply for a passport when you want or anticipate traveling.

    Culture of Uganda
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Culture of Uganda Uganda 's population is made up of a complex and diverse range of tribes Lake Kyoga forms the northern boundary for the Bantu -speaking peoples, who dominate much of east central and southern Africa . In Uganda they include the Baganda and several other tribes. In the north live the Lango and the Acholi , who speak Nilotic languages . To the east are the Iteso and Karamojong , who speak a Nilotic language. A few Pygmies live in the forests of the west. Each tribe has its musical history; songs are passed down from generation to generation. Ndigindi lyre entongoli harp amadinda xylophone ) and lukeme (thumb piano) are commonly played instruments. An Acholi, Okot p'Bitek , is one of Uganda's most famous writers of folklore, satirical poems and songs . His book Song of Lawino (1966) describes the stories told in Acholi songs. While about two-thirds of the population is Christian , the remaining third still practises animism or follows Islam . There were sizeable numbers of Sikhs and Hindus in the country until Asians were expelled in , although many are now returning following an invitation from the president.
