Tyler, oil painting by Hart, c. 1841-45; in the Library of Virginia, Richmond, Va., U.S. The Library of Virginia (b. March 29, 1790, Charles City county, Va., U.S.d. Jan. 18, 1862, Richmond), 10th president of the United States (1841-45) who took office upon the death of President William Henry Harrison. A maverick Democrat who refused allegiance to the program of party leader Andrew Jackson, Tyler was rejected in office by both Democrats and Whigs and functioned as a political independent. Born into a politically active family, young Tyler studied law and began his political career in the Virginia legislature (1811-16, 1823-25, 1839). He was elected a U.S. congressman (1817-21), state governor (1825-27), and U.S. senator (1827-36). His service in Washington was marked by consistent support of states' rights and strict construction of the Constitution. While in the Senate, Tylerwho was a slaveholdersought to prohibit the slave trade in the District of Columbia but opposed its abolition there without the consent of Maryland and Virginia. He voted against a protective tariff as unconstitutional but also condemned South Carolina's attempt to nullify it. In an unusual show of independence, Tyler resigned from the Senate in 1836 rather than yield to his state legislature's instructions to reverse his vote on Senate resolutions censuring President Jackson for removal of deposits from the Bank of the United States. This anti-Jackson stand endeared Tyler to the opposition

Fun Fact: John Tyler was the first president to be married in office on June 26, 1844. Fast Fact: At the end of John Tyler's administration, the United States annexed Texas. Inauguration:
Vice President John Tyler became President upon William Henry Harrison's death one month after his inauguration. U.S. Circuit Court Judge William Cranch Administered the oath to Mr. Tyler at his residence in the Indian Queen Hotel on April 6, 1841. Biography: Dubbed "His Accidency" by his detractors, John Tyler was the first Vice President to be elevated to the office of President by the death of his predecessor. Born in Virginia in 1790, he was raised believing that the Constitution must be strictly construed. He never wavered from this conviction. He attended the College of William and Mary and studied law. Serving in the House of Representatives from 1816 to 1821, Tyler voted against most nationalist legislation and opposed the Missouri Compromise. After leaving the House he served twice as Governor of Virginia. As a Senator he reluctantly supported Jackson for President as a choice of evils. Tyler soon joined the states' rights Southerners in Congress who banded with Henry Clay, Daniel Webster, and their newly formed Whig party opposing President Jackson. The Whigs nominated Tyler for Vice President in 1840, hoping for support from southern states'-righters who could not stomach Jacksonian Democracy. The slogan "Tippecanoe and Tyler Too" implied flagwaving nationalism plus a dash of southern sectionalism.

    Political Affiliation: Democrat, Whig
    Religious Affiliation: Episcopalian
    Summary of Religious Views:
Franklin Steiner, in his book The Religious Beliefs Of Our Presidents , categorized Tyler among "Presidents Whose Religious Views Are Doubtful." Although affiliated with the Episcopal church, he did not take "a denominational approach to God," according to his biographer (Robert Seager II, and Tyler too: A Biography of John and Julia Gardiner Tyler , p. 109).
Tyler was a strong supporter of religious tolerance and separation of church and state.
    Quotations:
"The intolerant spirit manifested against Catholics, as exhibited in the burning of their churches, etc., will so soon as the thing becomes fairly considered, arouse a strong feeling of dissatisfaction the part of a large majority of the American people; for if there is one principle of higher import with them than any other, it is the principle of religious freedom." letter to Robert Tyler, 19 May 1856

Last updated 2 Sep 2000 Everyone knows that the average life span of humans has increased markedly in the 20th century, but has it increased for everyone? An informal study of U.S. presidents may yield some surprising answers. My aim is to look at the effect of medical advances over the last two centuries on the longevity of those who are most likely to have access to those advances. I think presidents make an interesting (if small) sample because of their demographic uniformity: all are white male politicians, almost all are military veterans, and presumably all had sufficient wealth and/or prestige to command whatever medical resources were available in their later years. Of the 41 men who have held the office, 5 are still alive (Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton), 4 were victims of homicide, all from gunfire (Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley, Kennedy)*, and 32 died of natural causes (4 while in office: Harrison, Taylor, Harding, FD Roosevelt). These 32 are listed below by date of death. The "ordinal" figure is the order in which each served as president, Cleveland having served two non-consecutive terms. NAME ORD-

Died 26 January 1896 John Tyler, Jr. He was born April 27, 1819 and died January 26, 1896. He was famous for defending his father in a much-publicized duel with a Richmond newspaper. John Jr. was a writer, lawyer and politician who was not successful as any of the three. He became an alcoholic. John, Jr. married Martha "Mattie" Rochelle, but lived with her only a few months before trying to get a divorce. And yet, they had three children together. John Tyler, President from 1841-1845, had two wives. Both were First Ladies, and between them had fifteen children, which is still the record for presidential children. Fourteen of these children lived to maturity. John Tyler, Jr., 1819-1896. Like his older brother, John also became a lawyer, served as private secretary of his father during his presidential term and also campaigned for James Buchanan. During the Civil War, he served as Confederate assistant secretary of war. After the war, he practiced law in Baltimore. President Grant appointed him to a minor position in the Internal Revenue Bureau at Tallahassee, Florida. John Tyler, Jr. died 26 Jan 1896, 76 years, 9 mos. Placed in the Public Vault at Congressional Cemetery.
