Washington, George - 1st U.S. President
Born 22 February 1732
Died 14 December 1799
Term 1789 to 1797
  • Winning the first presidency by a unanimous vote, with some individuals having wished to make Washington king, it seems unusual that he did not really want the position of president. Although a successful general and president, Washington remained interested in farming throughout his presidency. He bred animals, specializing in the breeding of mules and helped to raise the quality of stock across the nation. As the first president, Washington had many new tasks to accomplish with trial and error as the only available method for accomplishing them. After appointing people to head the four executive departments, he tried to meet with each head, or ] secretary, individually. This proved to be daunting. As a result he had the secretaries meet with him as a group, forming the government's first cabinet. New York was the nation’s first capital, but people felt that the capital should be outside the territory of any states. George Washington selected the site for our current capital between the states of Maryland and Virginia. While the new capital was being built, Washington led the country from Philadelphia, which served as a temporary capital.

John Tyler
Tyler was the first vice president to assume the office of President after the death of his predecessor. His most notable accomplishment was the annexation of Texas.
The Early Years
John Tyler was born in Greenway, Virginia. His mother died when he was seven years old. He attended The College of William and Mary. Upon graduation,Tyler began to study law, first under his father (a former governor of Virginia), then under his cousin and finally under Edmund Randolph, the first US Attorney General. Tyler was admitted to the bar in 1809. From 1811-1816 he served as a Member of the Virginia House of Delegates. He led the efforts to censure the two Virginian senators who had voted for the creation of the Bank of New York. During the War of 1812, Tyler enlisted in the militia as a Captain. His unit, however, saw no combat. From 1816- 1821, Tyler, who was elected on a states' rights platform, served in the House of Representatives. In January of 1821, after consistently finding himself in the minority on most issues, he resigned. From 1823-1825, he was a member of the Virginia House of Delegates and from 1825-27 was Governor of Virginia. For the next nine years, Tyler served in the US Senate. He became a vocal opponent of Andrew Jackson. From 1838 to 1840 Tyler served as a Member of the Virginia House of Delegates. In 1840 he was elected Vice President to balance the ticket of William Harrison.

Was John Tyler never really president of the U.S.?
13-Jan-1995 Dear Cecil: A friend and I are having an, uh, open exchange of views on the topic of John Tyler. My friend said, "The United States never had a president named Tyler," and pulled out some reference that said Tyler had no constitutional authority to assume the presidency when William Henry Harrison died but was only the vice president performing the duties of the president. I pulled out the Encyclopaedia Britannica, where John Tyler is listed as "10th president of the United States." My friend, and at this point I am using the term loosely, disputes this but has agreed to abide by Cecil's opinion, which is hereby requested. NB: There is a fairly expensive meal riding on providing the correct information. Not that you need any incentive. Fania, via the Internet Dear Fania: Of course not. But while Cecil's soul hungers only for knowledge, his body wouldn't mind a nice steak. Your friend is being obnoxious. Tyler was the first vice president to assume the powers of the presidency upon the death of the incumbent. There was some question at the time whether he was president or merely acting president, the Constitution being ambiguous on this point. Tyler's detractors in fact referred to him as "His Accidency." What practical consequence the matter had is debatable, but in the interest of clarity both houses of Congress passed resolutions declaring that Tyler was president, period. That settled things for all but a few nitpickers, of whom your friend regrettably is one. When do we eat?

John Q. Adams is the only Member to have been elected to the House of Representatives after having served as President of the United States. His father, John Adams, was the 2nd President of the United States. John Quincy Adams represented the citizens of Plymouth, Massachusetts from March 4, 1831 until his death, earning the nickname Old Man Eloquent for his great speaking ability. He worked to abolish slavery and opposed the House's "Gag Rule," which banned all debate on slavery from 1836 until 1844. On February 21, 1848, Adams suffered a stroke while sitting at his desk in the Old House Chamber. He was taken to the Speaker's office to recover but died there 2 days later.

Tippecanoe and Tyler, too !!
U.S. President John Tyler In 1845 U.S. President John Tyler signed the Treaty of Annexation with Republic of Texas President Anson Jones. Under great suspicions of law and authority, Texas presumedly became a state of the union of American States by this treaty.
This treaty has disappeared from the Library of Congress. A Texan National asked for a certified copy in November of 2002 from the Library and after hours of searching, could not locate the document.
Since it was a treaty between two nations, there should of course be one on file in Texas. Researchers went to the Secretary of State in Texas seeking a certified copy of this treaty and again it's missing.
In 1861 President John Tyler stated that Texas did have the right to secede from the United States. Who would know better than the person who negotiated and signed the treaty? !
For this statement of fact and truth, the Federal Dictators in Washington, D.C. declared U.S. President John Tyler the Number One Enemy of the United States.
Myth, rumor or fact has it that the treaty included secret agreements between the two nations. If so, these seem to be intentionally covered up by the 'missing' treaty. More Fraud.. More Coverup.

For only the second time in our country's history, the son of a former president has himself been elected president. Is there something in the presidential gene pool that propels the sons of chief executives into the political fray? Or is it just the learning experiences, connections, and family name that give them an advantage? More of the latter than the former, probably, but surprisingly few presidential "sons of fortune" toss their hat into the political ring. Of almost 90 boys born to presidents, we've found only 18 that have held political office. (The list below may not be complete, but should be pretty close! “John Tyler was the son of a distinguished plantation family. He went to private school and William and Mary College. Upon graduation he studied law with his father. He entered politics and held state and national offices. He had been a Democratic-Republican but became a Whig. When Harrison died Tyler found himself without a party because he could not agree with the Whig legislators. He had opposing views about national parks, tariffs, federally financed projects and slavery. In spite of these differences he passed settlement laws, established trade with China, ended the second Seminole War, and paved the way for Texas’ annexation. Above all else, he established the presidency as a full-powered position when reached as a result of the president’s death. At the end of the term he retired from politics until 1860 when he voted in favor of Virginia’s leaving the Union at the state secession convention.”
