JOHN TYLER U.S. President John Tyler had been a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, governor of Virginia and a member of the Senate before being tapped by the Whigs to be William Henry Harrison 's running mate in 1840. The Whigs had chosen Tyler not for his policies, but to draw support from the south. A month into his term, Harrison died and Tyler was president. By the end of his term, neither the Whigs nor the Democrats supported him, and he chose not to run for re-election. He was succeeded by Democrat James K. Polk . At the time of his death, Tyler was a member of the Confederate Congress, in revolt against the United States.
Extra credit : First Lady Letitia Tyler died in the White House in 1842. Two years later, at the age of 54, John Tyler married 24 year-old Julia Gardiner... Tyler had 15 children, the most fathered by any U.S. president... Tyler featured in Harrison's famous campaign slogan, "Tippecanoe and Tyler too!"

John Tyler, 10th president of the United States, was called "His Accidency" by his foes because he was the first president to get the job without being elected to it. He took the helm when President Harrison died after only one month in office. Tyler had other "firsts" as president: His first wife was the first wife to die while her husband was still president, and he was the first president to marry while in office. Tyler was the last of the Virginia aristocrats in the White House. He was a Southerner until his death, even being elected to the Confederate Congress after unsuccessfully trying to keep the Union from dissolving and entering the Civil War. He was the only president who also allied himself with the Confederacy.

John Tyler, Tenth Vice President (1841) To this body [the Senate] is committed in an eminent degree, the trust of guarding and protecting the institutions handed down to us from our fathers, as well against the waves of popular and rash impulses on the one hand, as against attempts at executive encroachment on the other. Go you now then, Mr. Clay, to your end of the avenue, where stands the Capitol, and there perform your duty to the country as you shall think proper. So help me God, I shall do mine at this end of it as I shall think proper. He held the office of vice president for only thirty-three days; he presided over the Senate for less than two hours. Despite this brief experience, John Tyler significantly strengthened the office by enforcing an interpretation of the Constitution that many of his contemporaries disputed. Tyler believed that, in the event of a vacancy in the office of president, the vice president would become more than just the acting president. He would assume the chief executive's full powers, salary, and residence as if he himself had been elected to that position. Taken for granted today, that interpretation is owed entirely to this courtly and uncompromising Virginian who brought to the vice-presidency a greater diversity of governmental experience than any of his predecessors. Early Years John Tyler was born on March 29, 1790, at Greenway, his family's twelve-hundred-acre James River estate in Charles City County, Virginia. He was the second son among the eight children of John and Mary Armistead Tyler. The elder John Tyler had been a prominent figure in the American Revolution and a vigorous opponent of the Constitution at the Virginia ratifying convention. Young John Tyler's mother died when he was only seven, leaving the boy's upbringing to his father. During John's late teens and early twenties, his father served as governor of Virginia and then as a federal judge. A modern biographer concluded: "The most important single fact that can be derived from John Tyler's formative years is that he absorbed

John Tyler was born in Charles City County, Virginia, the son of a prominent tobacco planter and former governor of the Commonwealth. Tyler graduated from the College of William and Mary, studied law and served for five years in the Virginia assembly. From 1816 to 1821, Tyler represented his state in the House of Representatives where he emerged clearly as a firm supporter of states’ rights in an age of nationalism; he voted against the Missouri Compromise . Tired of swimming against the current, Tyler returned to Virginia and served in the legislature (1823-25) and as governor (1825-27). In 1827, he was elected to the U.S. Senate and initially was supportive of John Quincy Adams , but voted against federally funded internal improvements and the protective tariff He became a supporter of Andrew Jackson and an opponent of the Bank of the United States , but Jackson’s frequent use of executive power pushed Tyler into the ranks of the Whig Party . He was the only senator to vote against the Force bill in 1833. From 1838 to 1840, Tyler was again a delegate in the Virginia assembly.

, tenth president of the United States. Tyler was the first to ascend from the vice presidency through the accident of a chief executive's death. "His Accidency" was also only the second politician to switch parties before attaining the White House and the first to be driven from his party before departing Pennsylvania Avenue. Yet this partisan without a party and chief executive with almost no followers scored a presidential triumph so portentous as to make him one of the most important American presidents. Tyler believed that these paradoxes stemmed from his devout adherence to states' rights. Born and bred to be a Virginia gentleman of the old school, he was educated at William and Mary, studied law, and swiftly ascended in state politics. He served successively in the Virginia House of Delegates, the U.S. House of Representatives, and the governorship of Virginia before being elected to the U.S. Senate in 1827. Tyler's senatorial tenure coincided with Andrew Jackson's presidency. Tyler, seeking a less imperial president and a stronger states' rights policy, joined a small group of Jacksonians who deserted the fold and eventually became known as southern states' rights Whigs. In 1836, the Jacksonian-controlled Virginia legislature demanded and secured the recreant's senatorial resignation.

, tenth president of the United States . Tyler served in the U.S. House of Representatives as a Democrat, as governor of Virginia, and as a U.S. senator from Virginia. In 1840 he became the Whig party 's vice-presidential candidate with presidential nominee William Henry Harrison. When Harrison died April 4, 1841, after serving only one month, Tyler became the first vice president to succeed to the presidency because of the death of a president. During his administration the Webster-Ashburton Treaty was negotiated between the United States and Canada, and Texas was annexed in 1845. Tyler used the president's veto power to block many of the Whigs' domestic programs, and because of his opposition to Whig policies, he was not renominated for president in 1844.

    John Tyler
US President - 1841-45 Courtesy of the National Guard Dubbed "His Accidency" by his detractors, John Tyler was the first Vice President to be elevated to the office of President by the death of his predecessor. Born in Virginia in 1790, he was raised believing that the Constitution must be strictly construed. He never wavered from this conviction. He attended the College of William and Mary and studied law. Serving in the House of Representatives from 1816 to 1821, Tyler voted against most nationalist legislation and opposed the Missouri Compromise. After leaving the House he served twice as Governor of Virginia. As a Senator he reluctantly supported Jackson for President as a choice of evils. Tyler soon joined the states' rights Southerners in Congress who banded with Henry Clay, Daniel Webster, and their newly formed Whig party opposing President Jackson. The Whigs nominated Tyler for Vice President in 1840, hoping for support from southern states'-righters who could not stomach Jacksonian Democracy. The slogan "Tippecanoe and Tyler Too" implied flagwaving nationalism plus a dash of southern sectionalism.
