Its name means "Eight Standing Together" in Tuvaluan. With the exception of tiny Vatican City, it is the independent nation with the fewest inhabitants. Due to their low elevation (5 meters, or 14 feet maximum), the islands that make up this nation are threatened by any future sea level rise. The population may evacuate during the next decades to New Zealand, or Niue, a small Pacific island (independent but associated with New Zealand) that isn't threatened by sea level rise, but does have decreasing population.

Tuvalu, with a population of approximately 10,000 primarily Polynesian persons, occupies a land area of a little more than 10 square miles on 9 atolls in the central South Pacific. Independent since 1978, its Constitution provides for a Westminster-style parliamentary democracy. The Head of State is the British Queen, represented by the Governor General, who must be a Tuvaluan citizen. The judiciary is independent. A 32-member police constabulary, the only security force, is responsible to and effectively controlled by civilian authority. The primarily subsistence economy relies mainly on coconuts, taro, and fishing. With donor assistance, Tuvalu has developed a well-managed trust fund, which is supplemented by significant annual payments for use of its international telephone-dialing prefix. An agreement for use of the country's Internet address is expected to increase national revenues significantly. Remittances from Tuvaluans working abroad as well as the sale of postage stamps and of fishing licenses to foreign vessels provide additional foreign exchange. The country's isolation and meager natural resources limit the prospects for economic development. The Government generally respected the human rights of its citizens, and society is generally egalitarian; however, social behavior, as determined by custom and tradition, is considered as important as the law, is ensured by village elders, and leads to some discrimination. In the traditional culture of the islands, women occupy a subordinate role, with limits on their job opportunities.

    1. INTRODUCTION
Tuvalu comprises nine islands (atolls) in the southwest Pacific between 5 and 11 south the and 176 and 180 west (Lambert, 1982). The nine islands are Funafuti, Vaitupu, Niutao, Nanumea, Nanumaga, Nukufetau, Nui, Nukulaelae and Niulakita (Douglas and Douglas, 1989) - see Figure 1. They have a total land area of approximately 26 sq. km and are all less than 5 m above sea level (see World Factbook ). The islands are scattered over about 1.3 million square kilometres of the Pacific Ocean forming a chain running in a northwest to southeast direction of some 579 km in length. The population is over 10,500 [10,991 according to the July 2001 estimate of the World Factbook]. The country has 1.3 million sq km of ocean. Tuvalu is an independent state. The islanders of Tuvalu are Polynesians and females outnumber men, due to migration of working males. It is only at Funafuti and Nukufetau that ships can enter the lagoons, elsewhere there is no anchorage at all except in the calmest weather. Although Tuvalu is to the north of the recognized hurricane belt, the islands have been struck on a number of occasions in modern times by severe cyclones (Maddison, 1989), with three cyclones in 1997 (World Factbook). Tuvalu has a mixed market subsistence economy. Although agriculture has been and will remain a major development activity in Tuvalu, Tuvalu is not self-sufficient in agricultural production,. However, development projects are focusing on meeting at least 50 percent of food requirements. Fishing and farming are inexorably linked with the everyday lives of the people and agriculture is important within the general economy mainly as the provider of subsistence for the majority of the population.

    Abstract
The key components of project that was designed to assess and reduce the trauma that prevailed after a tragic fire in a dormitory at a Secondary School in the small isolated Pacific Island State of Tuvalu are presented here, and indications are given of the outcome. They pose questions of a clinical, conceptual, and organisational kind that might arise in other cross-cultural settings.
    Tragedy and Trauma in Tuvalu
    Introduction
At about 11 p.m. on Thursday 8 th March 2000 a fire broke out in one of the dormitories for girls at the mixed-sex Motufoua Secondary School on the island of Vaitupu in Tuvalu. It was thought to have started from a naked candle that a girl held under her blanket as she was doing extra revision for a class examination that was to be held the next day. The conflagration spread rapidly and caused the Matron and 18 of the residents to be burned to death. Eighteen other girls escaped the inferno, only three of whom suffered burns. Its traumatic effects on the total Tuvalu population of about 10 000 was widespread, and said to be in proportion to the immediate loss of either 8 000 New Zealanders or 25 000 Australians in any one calamity in their respective countries. The response of the Tuvalu Government was to establish a Commission of Inquiry into the causes of the fire, and to seek the help of a trauma consultant from New Zealand in dealing with the human aspects of the aftermath.
