The word Tuvalu means 'cluster of eight' and aptly describes the coral atoll group. The world's second smallest country with a total of only 26 square kilometres, Tuvalu has a pleasant tropical climate with little variation between day and night. All nine islands are inhabited with one or two villages on each outer island. Funafuti is its capital and administrative centre. Overview The Spanish were the first Europeans to see the islands in the 1500s. However, in 1819 an American ship captain, De Peyster, named the main island in the group Ellice's Island after a British politician who owned the cargo aboard his ship. In 1841, the U.S. Exploring Expedition commanded by Charles Wilkes visited three of Tuvalu's islands and welcomed visitors to his ships. Other early interactions with the outside world were far less benignin 1863, hundreds of people from the southern islands were kidnapped when they were lured them aboard slave ships with promises that they would be taught about Christianity. Those islanders were forced to work under horrific conditions in the guano mines of Peru.
Eventually, the islands came under Britain's sphere of influence as the Pacific was divided up in the late 19th century. The Ellice Islands were administered by Britain as part of a protectorate (1892-1916) and as part of the Gilbert and Ellice Islands Colony (1916-74).
During World War II, several thousand American troops were in the islands. Beginning in October 1942, U.S. forces built airbases on the islands of Funafuti, Nanumea, and Nukufetau. Friendly cooperation was the hallmark of relations between the local people and the troops, mainly U.S. Marines and U.S. Navy SeaBees. The airstrip in the capital of Funafuti, originally built by the U.S. during the war, is still in use, as is the "American Passage" that was blasted through Nanumea's reef by SeaBees assisted by local divers.

Although no settlements were established, slave traders and whalers came to the islands infrequently. The country has been independent since 1978, and its Constitution provides for a parliamentary democracy. The Head of State is the Queen of England, represented by the Governor General, who must be a citizen of Tuvalu. The judiciary is independent. A 70-member police constabulary, the only security force, is responsible to and effectively controlled by civilian authority. The country has a population of approximately 10,000 persons on 9 atolls in the central South Pacific Ocean. The primarily subsistence economy relies mainly on coconuts, taro, and fishing. With donor assistance, Tuvalu has developed a well-managed trust fund, which is supplemented by significant annual payments for use of its international telephone-dialing prefix. An agreement for use of the country's Internet country code, ".tv," has increased national revenues significantly. Remittances from citizens working abroad as well as the sale of postage stamps and of fishing licenses to foreign vessels provide additional foreign exchange. The country's isolation limits economic development. The Government generally respected the human rights of its citizens, and the society is generally egalitarian; however, social behavior, as determined by custom and tradition, is considered as important as the law, is ensured by village elders, and leads to some social discrimination. Women traditionally occupy a subordinate role, with limits on their job opportunities.

» SAVE TUVALU AND VANUATU The first giant waves overflowed the nine atolls of Tuvalu (once called Gilberts and Ellice) in February 19th 2004, an archipelago-state situated below the Equator in Oceania, not far from the “changing date line”: the worst thing happened in the next two days, when the tide caught up three meters and twenty of height, submerging houses, governative offices and part of the airport and making the marine water emerge even in the inside of the islands, hundreds of meters far from the coast, creating salty lakes that destroyed the cultivations of alimentary plants.
The phenomenon has appears more and more frequently and with greater intensity in the last years.
By now it is written that within the end of this century the nation of Tuvalu, a bunches of atolls scattered in an immense area of the Pacific Ocean, is destined to disappear, unless drastic measures won’t be adopted world-wide in order to reduce the greenhouse effect, that provokes the dissolution of glaciers and the consequent elevation of the sea level. It’s said by one of the report of the UN, moreover unheard, if it is true that the "Protocol of Kyoto" for the control of the polluting agents that provoke to the greenhouse effect, has not been underwritten by various Countries of the world, some of the most technologically progressed nation, which are the greatest responsible of the carbon dioxide breaking in the atmosphere.
Tuvalu will be only the first nation to be submerged, because its maximum heigh on the sea level is just 4,5 meters, and because the effect of the elevation of the oceans is greater in proximity of the Equator, caused by the spin of the Earth, but the first tragic consequences of this slow but inexorable catastrophe is already very visible also in the others coralline archipelagos.
