A turtle's shell is among the most peculiar but successful pieces of design in the natural world. Unchanged for 200 million years, it has allowed the various species of turtles to populate almost everywhere in the world. But the limitations of life in a shell are causing turtles problems in today's world. Overexploitation by humans has caused many turtle species to become extinct or endangered. This episode introduces some inspirational people who are trying to help them.

Growing human pressure means the survival of two-thirds of the world's tortoises and freshwater turtles is under threat, conservationists say. I've seen macho youths slitting the throats of softshelled turtles and letting the blood drip into glasses of rice wine
They are launching a $5m campaign to try to save the 25 most endangered species. The greatest threat is the use of the reptiles for food and Far Eastern traditional medicine. Scientists say some species could be driven to extinction within 20 years. The campaign is the work of the Turtle Conservation Fund (TCF), set up by the Center for Applied Biodiversity Science (Cabs), based at Conservation International, and two partners of IUCN-The World Conservation Union. They are the Turtle Survival Alliance, and the Tortoise and Freshwater Turtle Specialist Group.

TURTLES AND TORTOISES USED IN CHINESE MEDICINE by Subhuti Dharmananda, Ph.D., Director, Institute for Traditional Medicine, Portland, Oregon
    BACKGROUND
Turtles and tortoises are part of a group of reptiles called chelonians (from the Greek word for these animals, chelona), which includes a third type, called terrapins. There is considerable interchange of the terms turtles and tortoises (as occurs for other reptiles, such as crocodiles and alligators), with "turtle" being the most commonly used generic for chelonians. Turtles are specially adapted to aquatic life, with a streamlined body shape and long feet with flippers; they spend most of their time in water. Some turtles live in the sea, others in fresh water. Tortoises, on the other hand, are land dwellers; they lack webbed feet, but have instead rounded feet suited for walking on land, though they live near bodies of fresh water. Terrapins (from the Indian word meaning "a little turtle") divide their time between land and water; they are always based in fresh water areas (rivers, ponds, lakes). In China, turtles and tortoises have long been used for food and medicine, and their shells were once a critical part of divination (they would be heated and the cracks interpreted). For medicine, the top shell (carapace) or the bottom shell (plastron) is used, depending on the animal. Tortoises, and most of the turtles, have hard protective shells made up of about 60 bones covered by plates called scutes. However, there is a "leatherback turtle" from the sea (

It is dark brown with a yellowish undershell. A tortoise's front legs are strong and shovel-like, great for digging burrows. It likes to live in sandy places between forests and grasslands, and prefers dry, well-drained areas. The gopher tortoise digs burrows that are 10 to 50 feet long, and sometimes have more than one tunnel. The tortoise usually eats grasses and weeds, but can also eat fruits and mushrooms. ALLIGATOR SNAPPER The Alligator Snapping Turtle is found in rivers and large streams in the panhandle. It is one of the largest freshwater turtles in the world, reaching a maximum size of 28" and weighing over 200 pounds. It has a very large head and prominent ridges (looking much like rows of mountains) along its dark brown shell. Younger Alligator Snappers fish during the day by wiggling a red wormlike growth on their tongues and then snapping up the fish it attracts. At night, they feed on vegetation, snails, mussels and smaller turtles.

When constructing an outdoor pen for your turtles or tortoises, the most important thing to consider is security. You want your pets to stay in, and predators to stay out. Both are capable of climbing over and digging under inadequate enclosures, so you'll need to think ahead. The perimeter of the enclosure should be as large as you can spare out of your yard. About 12 sq. yards should be allowed for a tortoise, less for turtles. The pen should receive full sun for as much of the day as possible (you can generate shade yourself with plants, etc.) and be away from any inedible plants. This includes any overhanging trees that shed their leaves or seeds in the fall. If your lawn has poor drainage, you should bury a layer of gravel beneath the surface to allow proper drainage, especially for animals from dry, desert environments. Chain-link fencing, while not recommended for the main wall, can be buried underground to prevent burrowing underneath the wall. You can also use chicken wire (or similar) or even concrete poured into a trench. The underground barrier should be at least one foot deep, two feet for known burrowing species. Any sharp edges should be snipped or covered to keep your little diggers from hurting themselves should they try to escape. If you are concerned about predators from above (hawks, owls, or anything that can scale the perimeter wall), you may consider putting up a screened canopy over the entire enclosure. This method is used often in orchards to prevent birds from eating fruit from the trees. It can be secured to the main wall with either poles raising it up from the middle of the enclosure allowing you to walk inside (would require more screening material), or it can lay flat over the pen and be rolled back when desired.
