More Information Reptile Guide Main Internal Parasites Turtles and tortoises are fortunate that they are not as susceptible to as many varieties of parasites that most mammals, birds, and other reptiles are plagued with. However, there are several internal and external parasites that can cause severe problems and even death, if they are not properly treated. Most parasitic problems in turtles and tortoises occur when the animals are either kept in close captivity with other turtles or tortoises or when kept in unsanitary housing conditions. One important note when it comes to treating turtles and tortoises concerns the use of the antiparasitic drug ivermectin. While ivermectin is one of the most effective antiparasitic drugs in the world, it should never be used on turtles or tortoises. It can be extremely toxic and cause death, if administered to turtles or tortoises. If there is any question as to the safety of an antiparasitic drug in turtles and tortoises, a qualified veterinarian should be consulted. Nematodes Nematodes are one of the most common parasites found in turtles and tortoises. These internal parasites are similar to the common roundworms that infect most mammalian species. The infection occurs when a healthy turtle ingests the tiny roundworm eggs that have been deposited in the environment through infected turtles feces. The eggs hatch, the larvae mature, and the worms set up residence in the digestive tract and will continue to reproduce and grow. Turtles and tortoises with a heavy worm load will often have symptoms of weight loss, diarrhea, and possibly vomiting of worms.

More Information Reptile Guide Main Turtles and tortoises are cold-blooded, which means that they cannot significantly raise or lower their body temperature independent of the environmental temperature. Their body temperature reflects the temperature of the surrounding air or water. Mammals and birds have the ability to raise or lower their temperature by increasing or decreasing their metabolism. Cold-blooded species do not have this ability, and are therefore, extremely susceptible to environmental temperatures. In fact, the regulation of external temperature may very well be the most important factor in determining the overall health of a captive turtle or tortoise. Relative humidity also plays a very important role in the health of a tortoise or turtle. There are many different species of turtles and tortoises, and therefore, a wide variety of correct temperatures and humidity. This article will provide a general overview of the rough guidelines, but each individual species of turtle or tortoise should have the specific environmental needs researched and provided. Temperature Humidity The second most important factor after temperature control is humidity. Humidity control can be difficult to monitor and is often overlooked, but the importance of proper humidity cannot be overstated. Improper humidity levels can lead to illness and death in all turtle and tortoise species.

Last update 01/07/2004 A society for all who are interested in turtles and tortoises. Our goals are: To share knowledge and information as to the proper care and raising of turtles and tortoises and all aspects pertaining to them. To use our combined voice and abilities to benefit the future of turtles and tortoises in the province of Ontario through education and conservation.. The society publishes a quarterly newsletter with articles on husbandry, herpitoculture, natural history, and conservation. It features regular columns on turtles and tortoises in the news, turtles and tortoises on the internet and computer, as well as staying up to date on regulations concerning turtles and tortoises in Ontario. All members will receive at least four newsletters for one years membership.
OTTS UPDATE
Over the past few months the OTTS has been paralyzed by a major computer malfunction. In fact the hard drive got fried effectively turning the computer into a pile of junk. It has taken some time and expense to procure a new computer but we are now back to full operating standard. Despite this major set back we have kept busy working on the newsletters and now have #19 complete and #20 more than 90% finished. Members should look for these in the mail over the next couple of weeks. The work on a new web site has also been on hold due to the computer failure and will now begin again. Many thanks to all for your patience through this problem. 01/07/2004 To see the title page of the latest newsletter (#18)

Turtles and Tortoises
Turtles have been on earth for about 200 million years, since before the dinosaurs! The largest turtle ever to have lived was about 4 metres long, and it lived over 65 million years ago. Turtles and tortoises are reptiles , the only ones to have a shell. Turtle bodies are protected by a shell on top and underneath their bodies. Their backbone, breastbone and ribs have become part of the shell, so they cannot remove their shells.
Like all reptiles, turtles are cold blooded, which means their bodies are the same temperature as the surrounding air or water. They cannot remain active in cold weather. Most hibernate during winter, which means a kind of special sleep. Also like other reptiles, turtles shed their skin, usually in early spring. The shields, or scutes, of the shell lift and peel off, and skin from the head, neck, legs and tail flake off in pieces, to reveal new skin underneath. Turtles pull their legs, tails and heads into the shell for protection. Some turtles pull their necks into their shells in an 's' shaped curve, and others pull the neck sideways into their shell. These side-necked turtles are only found in the southern hemisphere. Female turtles lay eggs after mating with a male. A female digs a hole on land and lays many eggs, then covers the hole and leaves the eggs. When the eggs hatch, the tiny hatchlings dig to the surface and fend for themselves.

Primitive turtles evolved over 250 million years ago, during the early Permian period. Turtles and tortoises are reptiles found worldwide. They have a hard shell protecting their body. The top shell is called the carapace; the bottom is called the plastron. The shell is covered with scutes, scales that are made of keratin (the same protein that our fingernails are made of). Some turtles live on land, others spend most of their lives in the seas, retrning to the shore only to reproduce. Turtles hatch from eggs; there is no parental care.

Turtles and Tortoises
All turtles have shells and scaly skin, but each species has special characteristics to live in its environment, such as webbed feet for swimming, long claws for digging, or a flattened shell to hide from predators in rock crevices. Many tortoises who live in hot, dry climates stay in burrows during the heat of the day. This is because turtles and tortoises, like all reptiles, are "cold-blooded"—they are only able to regulate their body temperature by moving into cooler or warmer places. Such animals will die or become ill if forced to stay at temperatures outside of the range needed for normal body functions. No matter where turtles live, they lay their eggs on land. Many turtles lay only a few eggs each year, and some lay only one egg every other year. In addition, many turtles reach sexual maturity at ten or more years. Together, these factors mean that the birth rate of wild turtle populations is very low. For many reasons, the collection of wild turtles places tremendous pressure on populations and has caused the endangerment of many species, especially when species face other human-caused threats like habitat destruction, water pollution, and unnatural predators.

International Rescue Effort Launched To Save Thousands of Turtles and Tortoises
WASHINGTON (Dec. 27, 2001) - An international rescue effort is underway to save approximately 7,000 freshwater turtles and tortoises confiscated by Hong Kong authorities earlier this month. The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and Humane Society International (HSI) have provided US$10,000 toward the effort. The turtles are scheduled to arrive in several shipments on board United Airlines flights from Kong Kong beginning tonight. United Airlines is shipping the turtles free of charge. Each shipment will be met by a team of veterinarians and turtle experts from the U.S.-based Turtle Survival Alliance, who will evaluate each turtle and begin the process that will eventually lead to placement in suitable homes for those turtles who can be saved. The turtles and tortoises were smuggled by air from Singapore to Macau, destined to be killed for food in China. In Macau, the turtles were loaded into four 20-foot containers on a river boat and shipped to Hong Kong, where they were seized on December 11. The turtles who survived were being kept alive until they reach the market because restaurants and customers prefer to purchase live turtles and tortoises, ensuring that the meat and organs are fresh. However, The HSUS says this practice results in inhumane treatment to the animals and smugglers view dead turtles as little more than the price of doing business.
