htmlAdWH('93212822', '728', '90'); Main Exotic Pets Turtles Tortoises Gimme SHELL-ter General Shelled Info All shelled reptiles are Chelonians, but not all Chelonians are the same. There are the aquatics, the semi-terrestrial, and the tortoises. There are vast differences in their care, what works for one will not work for the other. Check out our FAQ's for some answers to health care questions. Box turtles are semi-terrestrials, they are not tortoises, their diet and care is very different from that of the tortoise. Aquatic turtles are not to be kept as if they are fish, even though the housing set up for them is similar to fish. Treating them as if they are fish will kill them. Many species are federally protected, these laws pertain not just to sea turtles, many other species are protected, too. Before investing in a turtle or taking one out of the wild without a clue, please research them thoroughly. They are not cheap to keep, they have specific needs, and frankly I'm tired of seeing people take them home for pets because they are "cool" only to kill them through ignorance. I founded the Sacramento Turtle and Tortoise Club in April of 1981 and at present we have approximately 950 members. The dues are only $2.00 a year because it is important to me for everyone who wishes, to receive the newsletter and have a sense of belonging to a club devoted to turtles and tortoises. Of course, donations are always welcome, but not a necessity. To join the club, respond to the address at the bottom of this page.
We have three well-attended meetings a year and a TURTLERAMA each August which is our educational display and members are encouraged to set up their turtles and tortoises and inform the public as to the proper care of these unique creatures. Please feel free to e-mail me with any questions you might have, and I will respond promptly.

There you will find an indexed list of links to over a hundred additional websites - - providing lots more information and photographs for different species. Don't miss it! Easier - Turtles are reptiles whose soft body is covered by a hard shell. Most turtles can pull their legs, tail, and head into the shell for protection. Different turtles live on land, in water, or both on land and in water. Some turtles that live on land are called tortoises. A terrapin is a turtle that lives in or near freshwater or partly salty, coastal water. The name terrapin is only used for a group of North American turtles. Harder Today over 40 species of turtles including most sea turtles and many types of tortoises are endangered, and if turtle conservation and protection does not improve, certain species will become extinct. People are their greatest threat. Historically people have sought turtle eggs and meat for food. Turtle shells have been used for ornamentation. Rare exotic turtles have been shipped and trafficked as pets. Turtles are still hunted and captured today; turtle nests are plundered. People further harm turtles by eliminating their natural living areas as forests, swamps, and other areas are transformed for farms and urban growth. Further endangerment comes from continued pollution of their living areas.

TURTLES AND TORTOISES, common name for reptiles that make up the order Chelonia, (also known as Testudines), recognized by a hard shell that encloses the internal organs of the body. Turtles are ancient life forms. The earliest fossils recognized as turtles date from the Triassic period, about 200 million years ago; thus, turtles were in existence prior to the emergence of the great dinosaur groups. Unlike dinosaurs, however, turtles have continued to adapt and flourish. The order Chelonia is divided into two suborders: the Cryptodira, comprising species that pull their heads into the shell by a telescoping movement of the neck; and the Pleurodira, comprising freshwater species that hide their heads by bending the neck sideways. About 250 species are grouped into 9 families. Found only in the temperate or tropical zones, most species are adapted to a freshwater or terrestrial habitat, and a small group to sea life. In American usage the term tortoise refers only to species of a terrestrial, or land-inhabiting, family, belonging to the Cryptodira; all other members of the order are called turtles. In Great Britain the term

Welcome to Reptiles among other things! This is Pugsley here and he is the mascot of these pages. He is a 14 year old male Green Iguana that I have had since March of 1994. He is a really good boy. None of that ugly breeding aggression so common in the male of the species. Click on the Iguanas link over on the left to learn more about him and iguanas in general. Elsewhere on my site you will find information on a wide variety of reptiles that I keep in my home. Care sheets, pictures and links abound. Your species not here? Check my Other Species Page out.
