Grand Turk

Grand Turk is the capital of the Turks and Caicos Islands. The Turks and Caicos Islands are in the Atlantic Ocean. These islands are approximately 575 miles southeast of Miami, Florida. Grand Turk is 6 miles long and 1 mile wide. The map above shows the Turks and Caicos Islands. The Caicos Islands are larger and more numerous than the Turks Islands. The Caicos Islands are to the west, and the Turks Islands are to the east. These two island groups are separated by a deep ocean trench. This trench is the Turks Islands Passage. The trench is 30 miles wide and over 7000 feet deep! This trench is a great place to see many oceanic creatures. In the springtime, whales migrate through the Turks Islands Passage. The Turks and Caicos Islands are a colony of Great Britain. The capital city of Grand Turk is Cockburn Town. During the 1998-1999 school year, ReefNews took a long journey to Grand Turk and saw many marine creatures, dove into the great Turks Island Passage barely 1/4 mile west of the west coast, and saw a beach which may have been Columbus's first landing place in the New World. We also visited the Turks and Caicos National Museum to see the remains of a mysterious shipwreck that is nearly 500 years old. Was this one of Columbus's ships? Tropical

Many beaches in the islands and cays are accessible only by boat. B ritish V irgin I slands The British Virgin Islands, about 60 miles east of Puerto Rico and less than one mile from the U.S. Virgin Islands, are a group of about 50 islands, islets and cays, most of which lie around the Sir Francis Drake Channel. Tortola, about 10 square miles, and Virgin Gorda, 8 square miles, are the largest ones. Most of them are volcanic, with exception of Anegada, a coral atoll 15 miles north of the rest of the archipelago. Other important islands are Jost Van Dyke, Norman, Peter and Beef Island, where the International Airport is located. First inhabited by Siboney indians, the islands were visited by Christopher Columbus on his second voyage to America, in 1493. Spaniards looked for gold and pirates took advantage of the islands' many hidden coves. Dutch settlers arrived in the 17th century, but soon the British replaced them. Nowadays the BVI have a governor appointed by England, but their constitution allows some autonomy from UK.

History Though originally inhabited by the Taino Indians, it was the Lucayans that gave Turks and Caicos its name. Combining two words, the island chain is named after the Turk's Head "fez" cactus and the Lucayan term "caya hico," or string of islands. The Lucayans inhabited the islands from around 700AD. But with the arrival of explorers, slavery and disease made quick work of the population, and the Lucayans were wiped out by around 1520. Ruins and artifacts from the Lucayan culture can be found on the islands, and seen in the museum. Historians argue over who "discovered" the islands, Columbus or Ponce de Leon, but popular theory sides with Columbus. In fact, Grand Turk is supposedly the site where Columbus first made landfall on his 1492 expedition to the New World. During the 17th century, Bermudan settlers came to Turks and Caicos and began the salt industry that would be the cornerstone of the economy for years to come. Cotton and sisal were also vital parts of the economy for a short time, until the land was overused and became unfruitful. In later years, these settlers were joined by British Loyalists from the colonies fleeing the American Revolution In 1766, Turks and Caicos became part of the Bahamas government, in a short-lived and unsuccessful attempt, and in 1874, the islands were annexed to Jamaica. After Jamaica's independence in 1962, Turks and Caicos went back to being loosely affiliated with the islands of the Bahamas for around ten years, until becoming a British Crown Colony.

The Cayman Islands are located in the Caribbean Sea south of Cuba, from which they are separated at the closest point by about 240 kilometers (see fig. 19). The three islands are an outcropping of the Cayman Ridge, a submarine mountain range that extends west from the Sierra Maestra mountain range in Cuba. Grand Cayman is the largest of the islands with a total area of 195 square kilometers. Cayman Brac, 142 kilometers northeast of Grand Cayman, is only 20 kilometers long by 2 kilometers wide. Little Cayman, eight kilometers west of Cayman Brac, is sixteen kilometers by two kilometers in size. The total land area of the three islands is 260 square kilometers, or approximately that of Austin, Texas. All three islands are low lying and are composed of limestone and consolidated coral. A seventeen-meter hill at the northwest tip of Grand Cayman is its highest point. The highest point on Little Cayman is only twelve meters in elevation. Cayman Brac is distinguished by a forty-three-meter limestone cliff that rises from the sea on its eastern tip. Vegetation is largely scrub with mangrove swamps covering about a third of all the islands' area. Located 920 kilometers southeast of Miami and about 50 kilometers southeast of the Bahamian island of Mayaguana, the Turks and Caicos are a group of 8 major islands and more than 40 small islets and cays (see Glossary). The islands are made up of two groups separated by the thirty-five-kilometer-wide Turks Island Passage: the westernmost Caicos Islands, including six of the major islands, and the easternmost Turks Islands with the remaining two major islands (see fig. 20). The islands have a total land area of 430 square kilometers, about the size of San José, California.
