Via the outdoor museums of Uzbek Silk Road cities, a string of jam-packed bazaars, an abundance of yurts and five thousand kilometres later, we arrived at our eventual destination: Son Kol lake, home to the nomadic horsemen of the Tien Shan mountains in Kyrgyzstan. We've tried to make it more than just a tale of shashlyk kebabs and vodka. As well as posting diaries of our thoughts, eclectic images and a snippet of cultural background, we've noted practical resources for the more pedal-driven reader. This includes maps, stats, visa help, treadly shops and in true cycle-tourer style, a particularly beady eye was cast over the region's culinary offerings. Loaded with challenges, encounters and hospitality, we can't claim that travelling by tandem was always easy. But tough times or not, it was certainly an experience that left an incredible impression of this fascinating land.

T¼rk§e Today: Tuesday September 27, 2005 Italy-Excavati on-Parthian /GNR/ Italian digs unearth ancient Parthian court Turin, May 7, ANSA/IRNA Italian digs in Turkmenistan are unearthing an extensive archaeological complex that was once a flourishing artistic and political center for the ancient civilization of Parthia. The latest round of digs has revealed invaluable detail about a fortified complex, located 18km southwest of the country's modern capital Ashkhabad, near the border of Iran, according to the excavation director, Antonio Invernizzi of Turin University. Archaeologists believe that Old Nisa, one of the Parthian Empire's earliest capitals, was founded in the 2nd century BC. It was renamed Mithradatkirt, or fortress of Mithradates (171-138 BC) after the king who turned Parthia into a powerful empire and one of Ancient Rome's greatest rivals. Invernizzi explained that the complex expanded out from an original cluster of buildings protected by walled fortifications after Mithradates conquered Iran and Mesopotamia.
