Select a page to visit: Home Project Description Objectives of the Project Subjects and testing sites Researchers Shanley Allen Sotaro Kita Asli Ozyurek Mihoko Fujii References
PROJECT SUMMARY Elicited data are collected using short animated motion events as stimuli from children aged 3, 5, and 9 years, and from adult speakers. The data are analyzed in terms of (a) lexical and semantic development of elements of motion events, (b) how these elements of motion events are presented in gestures developmentally, and (c) how the development of gestural representations match with the development of the acquisition of language-specific semantic distinctions. The results will contribute to a clearer picture of the interaction in development between children’s non-linguistic representations of spatial relations and their sensitivity to the lexical semantic categories of their language.

Fukhian
A Constructed Agglutinating Human Language
The original grammar (in German) this document was derived from Lexicon (in Lisp and German)
This page uses a romanisation to show the Fukhian grammar. For showing pronunciation, CXS (=Conlang X-Sampa) is used. Please note that some examples in this file reflect the Ancient Fukhian language. Unfortunately, they are not always properly marked. This was my first constructed language. I started to work at it around 1989, maybe earlier. It has not been modified since around 1994 and although I see some deficiencies today, I do not intend to improve or extend it in a way that would be changing the original design goals. This usually means that I cannot change or even extend it at all.
Fukhian Script
Overview (one image) . Parts: Letters Delimiters Misc Some font samples ... Metafont source files for Fukhian
The Fukhian script is an alphabet that is designed to be written by hand. It has some similarities with the Arabic script, but it is a 'hanging' script like Devanagari. Writing direction is left-to-right, bottom-to-top.

This web site offers you English-language translations for more than 100 songs sung in Arabic, Armenian, Turkish, Greek, and Hebrew. Please don't send me e-mail asking me to help you find a translation!!! If it doesn't appear on this page, I don't have it. Let me repeat that. If it doesn't appear on this page, I don't have it. I don't speak Arabic, Greek, Hebrew, Armenian, or Turkish and I can't help you. Instead of asking me for something I can't provide, please explore the Lyrics Links and the Books With Song Translations that I've recommended belowmaybe one of those resources will have your song.
Table Of Contents
If you know of additional sources, or if you have an English-language translation to a Middle Eastern song that you're willing to share on this web site, please contact me and I'll gladly add it! A word about song lyrics: They don't always make sense! If you read a translation and find yourself asking, "Huh?" remember that perhaps the lyrics don't make sense in the original language, either! Consider the American folk song, "Oh Susanna," which has a verse with the following lyrics: "It rained all night the day I left, the weather it was dry, the sun so hot I froze to death, Susanna don't you cry!"

Signing in the Seraglio: mutes, dwarfs and jestures
at the Ottoman Court 1500 - 1700 by: M. Miles m99miles@hotmail.com Abstract: Deaf people, known as 'mutes', worked in the Turkish Ottoman court from the fifteenth to the twentieth century in various roles along with dwarfs and other entertainers. Their signing system became popular, was used regularly by hearing people including successive Sultans, and was reportedly capable of expressing ideas of whatever complexity. The Ottoman court mutes' early achievements, at a time when deaf education and employment was barely considered feasible in Western Europe, have been obscured through literary critics' reactions against later travellers' stereotyping of Middle Eastern countries. Detailed, contemporary sixteenth and seventeenth century accounts of the mutes' activities and signing system are collated and appraised by modern linguistic and historio-graphical criteria. ISSN 0968-7599 (print)/ISSN 1360-0508 (online)/99/010115-20
Introduction These communication achievements at the Ottoman court have been obscured by the outcomes of two dissimilar European academic discourses. One is the 'anti-Orientalist' dismissal of mostly eighteenth century travellers' reports from the Middle East.2
