Turkish is written with the Latin alphabet and is the language of 90 percent of the population in Turkey. The Caucasus and the Kurdish dialects, Arabic, Greek, Ladino and Armenian are among the other 70 languages spoken in the country. The communities which speak these languages spread from Central Asia towards the east and northeast, and especially to the west. Since ancient times Turkish has influenced the very different languages and dialects of Middle Persian and replaced some of the Indo-European languages from the Caucasus and Anatolia. After the acceptance of Islam, the influences of Arabic and Persian on the Turkish language became evident. As of around the end of the nineteenth century , contemporary Turkish writing such as the Turkish in Turkey, the Turkish in Azerbaijan and the Turkish in Kazakhstan, based on the Turkish dialects was being formed.

Central Asia After the Mongol Invasion-Islam and Sedentray Life as a Consequence
by
Prof. Dr. Ozkan Izgi
In the period after the Mongolian conquest of Central Asia we see not only a change in the political situation but also a change in the ethnic composition of the population and a change in the way of life which is later evidenced by a sedentary population. In this paper, I want to deal with the situation before and after the Mongolian conquest. Here, we encounter the following questions: 1. What happened to the Turkish peoples and tribes who occupied this area during the time of the Karakhanids and the Khorezmshahs? We do not find most of them later. 2. How did the Mongolian tribes who came with the conquest become Turkicized in language and in culture? This is obvious at Timur's time. 3. How did these nomadic peoples become sedentary? In answering these questions, let us first look at the location of the Turkish tribes in Central Asia before the Mongolian conquest. We will deal with the Oghuz first. In the first half of the tenth century, the Oghuz were living in the area between the Caspian sea and Farab, the Turkish name of which is Qarachuq. In the eleventh century they were living in IsfijabSayramin the Syr Darya region and in the steppes north of this river.

Turkish

The major language belonging to the Turkic family, a subfamily of the Altaic languages; official and dominating language of Turkey
Other related languages of the Middle East are Azeri, Turkmen and Khorasan Turkic.
Through its entire history, Turkish has used the local alphabets of the regions where Turks have settled. Hence, old Turkish texts can be found in alphabets as different as the Nestorian, Sogd, Uighur, Pali, Manichean, Brahman and through most of its literal period, in Arabic
Modern Turkish is a product of the reform work started since the formation of the Turkish republic in 1923. It was based on Ottoman Turkish and Old Anatolian Turkish, both which had used Arabic script. Modern Turkish uses the Latin alphabet, but with special signs for Turkish vowels. Another reform introduced to the older forms of Turkish were the purifying of the vocabulary, which had become greatly influence by Arabic and Persian words. In 1932 an estimated 60-65% of the words in Turkish were of foreign origin, a number which had fallen to 20-25% in recent years.
The fundamental features which distinguish the Altaic languages from the Indo-European are:
  • Vowel harmony.

The annual international summer program in Turkish Language and Culture has been in effect since 1982. It is an accredited program which offers courses at three basic levels taught by university staff specialized in teaching Turkish as a foreign language. The program provides intensive instruction in Turkish to adult learners while offering them an opportunity to have first-hand experience with the Turkish culture. COURSES Courses are offered at elementary, lower and upper intermediate and advanced levels. Class size is limited to approximately students. (Letters of support from advisors are crucial for acceptance in case of applications exceeding these numbers.) Each level meets 160 hours during the program. Classes are held on weekdays 9am - 1pm. In the afternoons, students are expected to participate in activities such as meeting with teaching assistants on informal basis for additional instruction and/or free conversation, attending lectures on various topics of the Turkish culture, viewing Turkish movies, etc. The lectures aim at giving a broader view of the Turkish culture by focusing on issues in various aspects of the society including economics, history, literature, fine arts, architecture, etc. The lectures are conducted by scholars specialized in their fields and are organized alternately in Turkish and English.

    Why Language Learning is Difficult

Studies show that in most languages, native-speakers tend to use less than 3,000 unique words on a daily basis. Then why is learning a seond language such an overwhelming task?
First, the written target language may use new characters if not an entirely new character set. Characters are put together to form new, unique and often unfamiliar sounds, even new pitches and inflections. For each word currently utilized in your native language, you must memorize the equivalent word in your target language.
Then you must learn rules for putting words together to form complete sentences of meaning, sentence structure. Then grammar with it's inherent rules and exceptions. Lastly, there's comprehension, listening and understanding at normal conversation speed.
It's no wonder so many people fail to learn a second language. Broken down to it's components, the challenge is overwhelming if not insurmountable. The Problem with False Claims
Many language websites, books, and software providers claim they can teach you to be fluent in a matter of days? Even offering

    http://countrystudies.us/turkey/25.htm
Language Reform: From Ottoman to Turkish
Turkey Table of Contents Within the Ottoman Empire, the Turks had constituted merely one of many linguistic and ethnic groups. In fact, for the ruling elite, the word Türk connoted crudeness and boorishness. Members of the civil, military, and religious elites conversed and conducted their business in Ottoman Turkish, which was a mixture of Arabic, Persian, and Turkish. Arabic remained the primary language of religion and religious law (see Religious Life, this ch.). Persian was the language of art, refined literature, and diplomacy. At an official level, Ottoman Turkish usually was used only for matters pertaining to the administration of the empire. Ottoman Turkish not only borrowed vocabulary from Arabic and Persian but also lifted entire expressions and syntactic structures out of these languages and incorporated them into the Ottoman idiom. With the establishment of the republic, Atatürk made language reform an important part of the nationalist program. The goal was to produce a language that was more Turkish and less Arabic, Persian, and Islamic; one that was more modern, practical, and precise, and less difficult to learn. The republican language reform called for a drastic alteration of both the spoken and the written language. This process was to be accomplished through two basic strategiesadoption of a new alphabet and purification of the vocabulary.
