Turkey's Islamic-rooted government surprises skeptics

ISTANBUL, Turkey (AP) When Turkey's prime minister showed up last week at a reception held by President Ahmed Necdet Sezer, he came without his wife, and thus demonstrated how different from fears his first year in office has been. His wife wears a head scarf, which Sezer, an avowed secularist, regards as a symbol of female Muslim militancy. So he had decreed that political wives who wear them should not be invited. Many angry husbands boycotted the affair, but Recep Tayyip Erdogan uttered barely a murmur of protest. His restraint is indicative of the pragmatism Erdogan has brought to the job, dispelling fears that his Islamic-rooted party's huge election victory a year ago Monday would inject Muslim ideology into the bloodstream of constitutionally secular Turkey. Instead, Erdogan has taken pains to avoid confronting the secular establishment that had already driven an Islamic-oriented government out of power in 1997. He has steered clear of religion and focused on the nation's most pressing priorities fixing the economy and getting Turkey into the European Union.

SPECIAL REPORT War Tracker On the Scene Map U.S. Iraq ... Special Report ANKARA, Turkey (CNN) Hours after Turkey's foreign minister said Tuesday the United States would be allowed to use Turkish air bases in a possible war with Iraq, his office said the country had made no such commitment. The statement from the Foreign Ministry seemed to underscore just how delicate the issue is in the only NATO country whose population is predominantly Muslim. Turkish Foreign Minister Yasar Yakis said earlier in the day that Turkey would prefer a peaceful solution to the Iraq situation, but if it comes to war then "of course we will cooperate with the United States because it's a big ally and we have excellent relations with the United States." "What we mean by cooperation is opening air bases and opening facilities," Yakis said in a news conference after meeting with British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw.

Turkey and Greece agree mine deal
Greek Foreign Minister Papandreou: "A first step to closer ties" ANKARA, Turkey Turkey and Greece have agreed to cooperate to clear landmines from along their borders. The NATO allies, but historical rivals, agreed to adopt the Ottawa Treaty against the use of landmines during talks in Ankara on Friday. The two countries remain divided over the status of Cyprus, which Turkey invaded in 1974, and their common border is scattered with mines. The invasion was in response to an Athens-backed Greek Cypriot coup aimed at union with Greece. And they came to the brink of war in 1996 over the ownership of a rocky outcrop in the Aegean Sea, but the tense bilateral relations have eased in recent years. Turkey Vegetable Soup
    8 servings (12 cups)
    • 2 tablespoons margarine or butter
    • 1 tablespoon curry powder
    • 1 cup chopped onions
    • 1 pound leeks, (4) cut in 1/4-inch cubes
    • 1/2 pound carrot, (3) cut in 1/4-inch cubes
    • 1/4 pound parsnips, (1) cut in 1/4-inch cubes
    • 1 pound potatoes, (3) cut in 1/4-inch cubes
    • salt and pepper, to taste
    • 4 cups fat-free chicken broth
    • 4 cups water
    • 1 pound skinless turkey breast,
      cut in 1/2-inch cubes
    • 3 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro
Cut up the turkey breast into 1/2-inch cubes. Cut the leeks, carrots, parsnips and potatoes into 1/4-inch pieces (I find the 6X6 Cuisinart blade perfect).
Melt the margarine in a dutch oven. Add the curry powder, onions, leeks, carrots, parsnip and potatoes. Cook, stirring until the vegetables are wilted, about 5 minutes. Add salt and fresh ground pepper to taste, the chicken broth and water. Bring to a boil and simmer for 30 minutes.
Add the turkey breast cubes and cook for 10 minutes.
Garnish each bowl with some chopped cilantro (also known as green coriander or chinese parsley).
About leeks: Choose those with crisp, brightly colored leaves and an unblemished white portion. Avoid any with withered or yellow-spotted leaves. The smaller the leek, the more tender it will be. Refrigerate leeks in a plastic bag up to 5 days. Before using, trim rootlets and the darkest portion of the green tops (the whole leek is edible, but the darker green portions have a stronger, less pleasant flavor). Slit the leeks from top to bottom and wash thoroughly to remove all the dirt trapped between the leaf layers.

    Islamic party ahead in Turkey
Erdogan is banned from running for election because of a conviction for "Islamist sedition" Story Tools
ANKARA, Turkey Turkey's politicians brought campaigning to a close ahead of a general election on Sunday expected to bring victory for a party reviled by the secularist establishment for its Islamist roots. Polls predict a heavy defeat to ruling coalition parties and victory to the Justice and Development Party (AKP), a result that could worsen political tensions within the NATO member. Facing moves to ban his party, AKP leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan has pledged to bolster economic growth and speed up democratic reform as Turkey chases membership talks with the European Union. Despite Turkey being predominantly Muslim 99 percent of the population are Muslim Erdogan has deliberately played down the religious credentials of his party. He says he has become more moderate. "I'm not the same person I was 10 years ago," he told CNN. On Saturday in the last speeches of the campaign, Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit was addressing a rally in the capital Ankara while Erdogan was campaigning in the Black Sea city of Rize.

Iraq and Turkey sign oil deal
BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) Iraqi officials announced on Thursday that an agreement had been signed between the Iraqi government and the Iraqi-Turkish committee for economic cooperation. Oil Minister Amer Rasheed said Turkish companies will provide equipment and build an oil field in south central Iraq. The deal also calls for work on an Iraqi-Turkish gas pipeline project and for Turkish help in developing truck manufacturing and railway lines in Iraq. A delegation of 300 Turkish business leaders arrived in Baghdad for the signing of the agreement. Negotiations over the agreement were complicated by the fact that coalition aircraft use a base in Turkey to patrol the northern no-fly zone in Iraq. But Rasheed praised the agreement saying it was the first time Turkish businesspeople had been "so cooperative with Turkish development in Iraq."

    159. Turkey Cooking Techniques
    Information on cooking turkey.
    http://www.urbanext.uiuc.edu/turkey/techniques.html
There are literally hundreds of ways to cook a turkey and each year new recipes and techniques are created based on trendy regional ingredients and creative cooking methods. Some are good, some are bad, and some are downright unsafe. All are designed to tantalize the senses and produce the perfect turkey - moist breast meat, tender legs and thighs, golden brown skin and memorable flavor. The greatest challenge for new and experienced cooks alike is to avoid the dreaded "dry turkey," which is usually in reference to the white meat of the turkey breast. Because the flavor of turkey marries well with a host of ingredients, turkey can be successfully braised, roasted, grilled, fried, boiled, broiled, barbecued and so on. Believe it or not, cooking a turkey is not that difficult. Which turkey cooking method chosen is up to the cook, just make sure it is a safe method. Wash hands, utensils, sink and anything else that has come in contact with the raw turkey with hot, soapy water immediately following preparation. The Good Traditional Roast Turkey (unstuffed)

TURKEY TROUBLES Hi. I'm a turkey. My name is NOT Tom, as so many call me. Tom is my brother. I'm the smart one. My name is Alfred. You know, it was bad enough when those creatures with the long, black hair started chasing us. They have feathers, too; so you'd think they'd know better than to go around picking on other flocks. But, then, they invited their friends from overseas to come after us, too. I'm talking about those friends shipped in on the big hollow log. The ones wearing those strange, brown leaves on their heads. They go around saying things something about May and flour. Maybe they eat us most of the year, then give us a break and eat flour in May. Who knows! Anyway, those hairy, feathered creatures did a lot to help the hollow log sailors. Sure, the feathered ones taught them how to hunt us, but they also taught them how to plant corn. I like corn. It was a good thing the hollow log creatures did, too. They were dying off fast until the feathered ones showed them a thing or two about living here.
