T he Bronze Turkey (The following was compiled from information from the Monmouth College history book "A Thousand Hearts Devotion," articles by former sports information director Rick Partin, various newspaper articles and personal accounts.) The exact date of the first game may have been forgotten, but the rivalry between Monmouth and Knox Colleges that began on a football field in 1888 is etched in the collective memory of the two schools. The rivalry ranks as the fourth oldest among Division III schools and sixth overall in college football. Knox can lay claim to the inception of today’s symbol of football supremacy by virtue of former player Bill Collins, who in 1928 persuaded the Galesburg Register Mail and the Monmouth Review Atlas to donate $40 each toward a trophy to be presented to the winner of the annual contest. Symbolizing the fact that the annual game was then held on Thanksgiving Day, the trophy was topped by a large bronze turkey on an ebony base. Each year, the Bronze Turkey was formally presented at the home basketball game of the victor – that is, when the bird could be found.

Archaeological evidence of far older cultures has been found in the region, however. Turkey - History
By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman Turkey's long history is full of interesting twists and turns, great power, and some historical firsts. Turkey's location in the Middle East puts it in the middle of some of the oldest civilizations on earth. Its location has also put it at the center of some of the greatest struggles in human history.
Turkey hasn't always been called Turkey. In fact, it's only been in the last few hundred years that it has had that name. For the thousands of years of human history in the area, Turkey was known as Anatolia. According to scientists, the earliest humans in Anatolia lived there around 7500 BC. These ancient people were mostly hunters and farmers. There exists today a cave called Karain where teeth and bones of these ancient people have been discovered.
Several thousand years later, a group of people called the Hattians lived in Anatolia. They were the first people in Anatolia to use a written language. The Hattians were the first people to use envelopes for their writings. They wrote on soft clay tablets, baked them for hardness, then wrapped the hardened tablet in more clay, then baked the whole thing again. It's a lot of work just to wrap one page of writing, but it was all the Hattians had to work with.

As the Bush Administration's push for war against Iraq gains momentum, the people of Turkey get more and more uneasy. Bridging the landscape between Europe and Asia, Turkey shares part of its southern border with Iraq. This puts them uncomfortably close to the battle zone, making the Turkish nation a political and strategic hot spot. Already, its location has significantly affected talks among NATO members, as Turkey knows such a war would severely undermine the nation's vitality with the imminent waves of refugees and loss of tourism and trading dollars. Although this nation suffered violent skirmishes between local rebels and Turkish authorities in 1999, along with some negative effects from U.S. air strikes on Afghanistan since 2001, those impacts would likely pale in comparison to the fallout from a U.S. war on Iraq. With Turkey's long history and rich culture, it's no wonder they're nervous over what they risk losing. Located between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean Sea, for millennia this region has thrived as a trading and cultural center. Travelers can see signs of its past from its ancient fortresses and mosques to its spice bazaars to its arts, and to its mix of traditional and contemporary lifestyles.

Turkey History and Culture
History The first major civilization in Anatolia was that of the Hittites, about 1900 to 1200 BC, which originated in the central plateau. The Ottomans emerged in history as leaders of Turks who fought the Byzantines in northwestern Anatolia. The Ottoman Empire reached its peak during the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent, and the social, administrative, and governmental institutions that had been evolving since the 14th century were formalized in a series of codes till the end of the century.

Turkey was created in 1923 from the Turkish remnants of the Ottoman Empire. Soon thereafter the country instituted secular laws to replace traditional religious fiats. In 1945 Turkey joined the UN and in 1952 it became a member of NATO. Turkey occupied the northern portion of Cyprus in 1974 to prevent a Greek takeover of the island; relations between the two countries remain strained. Periodic military offensives against Kurdish separatists have dislocated part of the population in southeast Turkey and have drawn international condemnation.
The Republic of Turkey, founded in 1923, has its roots in two historical sources deep in the depths of the past. One of these resources inherited by modern Turkey is the successful and shining history of the Turks over a time frame of more than 4,000 years. The other is the fact that Turks have been settled in Anatolia since the 11th century.
The Huns
The first Turkish tribe that is mentioned in history is the Huns. Clear records about the Huns made their appearance in the 8th century B.C. Chinese sources refer to the Huns as Hiung-nu and in time, some of the Huns migrated to the West.

Dear MIRA Members and Associates,
I was sincerely honored when I was asked to address you, by Valley Oaks Travel and MIRA, in this electronic medium and convey to you our reasons why the proposed trip to view the Total Eclipse 99 in Turkey would really
be an experience that you would not forget. An experience that would turn you into a repeater as most visitors to Turkey are. I am aware that due to the recent developments starting with the capture and extradition to Turkey of Abdullah Ocalan, the escalation of terrorist activities within the cities in Turkey must create some serious questions
in your minds about Turkey being a safe country to visit. Unfortunately in recent years my country has been faced with intermittent terrorist activity. However, it has not proven to be a threat to tourists in the past and I am confident that your journey will be peaceful and rewarding. We Turks generally have learned to take what we read in the papers with a grain of salt. We have heard frightening rumors in the past, but none of our clients has ever been harmed by any terrorist activities. Although there have been some reports in the press to the effect that tourism areas would be targeted to discourage especially Westerners from visiting Turkey, I as a professional of over 24 years do not believe that there is any need
to fear travel to Turkey. First of all, the Turkish police and army have stepped up security to prevent anything from happening. Secondly, and more important, the Kurds are aware that they have an international reputation

A defining moment in Turkey's history By Nicholas Watt and David Gow By Nicholas Watt and David Gow LONDON/BRUSSELS, DEC. 18. Turkey yesterday took the historic decision to set itself on the path to membership of the European Union 41 years after it first attempted to join the world's largest trading bloc. The decision came after 24 hours of bruising negotiations, in which the Turkish Prime Minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, threw out the E.U.'s first proposal and threatened to abandon the summit.

Ottoman Empire - Turkey
The Ottomans are one of the greatest and most powerful civilizations of the modern period. Their moment of glory in the sixteenth century represents one of the heights of human creativity, optimism, and artistry. The empire they built was the largest and most influential of the Muslim empires of the modern period, and their culture and military expansion crossed over into Europe. Not since the expansion of Islam into Spain in the eighth century had Islam seemed poised to establish a European presence as it did in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Like that earlier expansion, the Ottomans established an empire over European territory and established Islamic traditions and culture that last to the current day (the Muslims in Bosnia are the last descendants of the Ottoman presence in Europe). The Ottoman empire lasted until the twentieth century. While historians like to talk about empires in terms of growth and decline, the Ottomans were a force to be reckoned with, militarily and culturally, right up until the break-up of the empire in the first decades of this century. The real end to the Ottoman culture came with the secularization of Turkey after World War II along European models of government. The transition to a secular state was not an easy one and its repercussions are still being felt in Turkish society today, nevertheless, secularization represents the real break with the Ottoman tradition and heritage. The Ottoman Empire was a vast state founded in the late 13th century by Turkish tribes in Anatolia and ruled by the descendants of Osman I until its dissolution in 1918. Modern Turkey formed only part of the empire, but the terms ³Turkey² and ³Ottoman Empire² were often used interchangeably.
