Volleyball T he Bronze Turkey (The following was compiled from information from the Monmouth College history book "A Thousand Hearts Devotion," articles by former sports information director Rick Partin, various newspaper articles and personal accounts.) The exact date of the first game may have been forgotten, but the rivalry between Monmouth and Knox Colleges that began on a football field in 1888 is etched in the collective memory of the two schools. The rivalry ranks as the fourth oldest among Division III schools and sixth overall in college football. Knox can lay claim to the inception of today’s symbol of football supremacy by virtue of former player Bill Collins, who in 1928 persuaded the Galesburg Register Mail and the Monmouth Review Atlas to donate $40 each toward a trophy to be presented to the winner of the annual contest. The real end to the Ottoman culture came with the secularization of Turkey after World War II along European models of government. The transition to a secular state was not an easy one and its repercussions are still being felt in Turkish society today, nevertheless, secularization represents the real break with the Ottoman tradition and heritage. The Ottoman Empire was a vast state founded in the late 13th century by Turkish tribes in Anatolia and ruled by the descendants of Osman I until its dissolution in 1918.
