Igor Torbakov 7/02/03 Print this article Email this article At present, Turkey finds itself in the middle of its "annual military coup discussion," suggests Sedat Bozkurt, the news coordinator at the ATV television station. Speculation about possible military intervention has intensified in the days since a June 26 meeting of Turkey’s all-powerful National Security Council (MGK). At that meeting, which focused on efforts to promote Turkish membership in the European Union, the government, which is dominated by the Justice and Development Party (AKP), was unable to find common ground with military leaders on key policy matters. Turkish military leaders are irked by the AKP’s political course, which has established Turkey’s full membership in the EU as a key goal. To achieve this aim, the AKP has aggressively pushed reforms aimed at aligning Turkey’s legislative framework with EU standards. The problem is that the proposed changes are seen by many in the officer corps as detrimental the military’s interests, especially in limiting the influence that generals can exert over the political process. Military leaders have claimed that implementation of the proposed legislation could "endanger Turkey’s national security." Some commentators say the military is also concerned that the AKP government is steering the country away from the secularist tradition established by Kemal Ataturk, the founder of the modern Turkish state. The AKP’s origins are rooted in Islam and the party continues to enjoy the firm support of devout Muslims, especially those in the Anatolian heartland. The military has long believed itself to be the guardian of Turkey’s "Kemalist" political philosophy.

Turkish premier-designate fails to form government
December 21, 1998
Web posted at: 12:02 p.m. EST (1702 GMT) ANKARA, Turkey (CNN) Turkey's political crisis deepened on Monday when Prime Minister-designate Bulent Ecevit abandoned his efforts to persuade secularist leaders to form a new government. Ecevit, a veteran leftist, has sounded warnings that the power vacuum is helping the main opposition Islamists ahead of general elections set for April 1999. Turkey has not had a stable administration since a left-right coalition collapsed in 1995. A series of weak coalitions since then has presided over Turkey's estrangement from Europe particularly over human rights and a bitter conflict with Kurdish rebels. Ecevit gave up his efforts after three weeks of talks with party leaders that only highlighted the factional fights and personal rivalries that characterize Turkey's parliament.

US airforce plane prepares to take off from Incirlik
By BBC's Nick Thorpe at the Incirlik airbase in southern Turkey. The Turkish Government has agreed to a US request to use its airspace and airports for any military response to last Tuesday's terror attacks. As a Muslim country and frontline Nato member, Turkish strategic importance has grown significantly since last Tuesday. There are about a dozen grey American and British fighter aircraft and transport planes standing in the shimmering heat on the runway at the Nato base at Incirlik. They are used on a daily basis to patrol the no-fly zone over northern Iraq imposed after the Gulf War 10 years ago.
Turkey will increase the equipment, training and other assistance that it has been giving to the [anti-Taleban] Northern Alliance.
Government statement But the importance of this base and of other civilian and military airports in Turkey could now grow.

Turkey's Islamic-rooted government surprises skeptics
Erdogan, leader of an Islamic-rooted party, has avoided confronting Turkey's secularists. Story Tools YOUR E-MAIL ALERTS Follow the news that matters to you. ISTANBUL, Turkey (AP) When Turkey's prime minister showed up last week at a reception held by President Ahmed Necdet Sezer, he came without his wife, and thus demonstrated how different from fears his first year in office has been. His wife wears a head scarf, which Sezer, an avowed secularist, regards as a symbol of female Muslim militancy. So he had decreed that political wives who wear them should not be invited. Many angry husbands boycotted the affair, but Recep Tayyip Erdogan uttered barely a murmur of protest. His restraint is indicative of the pragmatism Erdogan has brought to the job, dispelling fears that his Islamic-rooted party's huge election victory a year ago Monday would inject Muslim ideology into the bloodstream of constitutionally secular Turkey. Instead, Erdogan has taken pains to avoid confronting the secular establishment that had already driven an Islamic-oriented government out of power in 1997. He has steered clear of religion and focused on the nation's most pressing priorities fixing the economy and getting Turkey into the European Union.
