    Resignations hit Turkey government
Prime minister Bulent Ecevit's poor health has fuelled political uncertainty in Turkey ANKARA, Turkey Turkey appears to be heading towards political meltdown after four Cabinet ministers, including the deputy prime minister, quit amid signs of growing rebellion against ailing Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit. Deputy Premier Husamettin Ozkan, considered one of Ecevit's closest aides, quit on Monday along with the culture minister and two other state ministers, NTV reported. All four were from Ecevit's Democratic Left Party (DSP). Nine DSP deputies also resigned from the party, and the state Anatolian news agency reported at least seven more were set to follow. The departures will increase speculation that the government is about to collapse. They came only hours after the head of the right-wing Nationalist Action Party (MHP), Devlet Bahceli, said a November election would help end uncertainty fuelled by the prime minister's poor health and divisions within the government.

    Turkey promises new economic measures
ANKARA, Turkey Turkish Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit has resisted calls for a government reshuffle following the collapse of the country's currency. Jobs were expected to go after the lira fell by about 40 percent in the last couple of days, but instead Ecevit promised to introduce new measures next week to combat the crisis-hit economy. Ecevit rejected any ministerial change during a six-hour emergency coalition government meeting on Saturday, saying they would only "damage the country." He failed to reveal details, but said in a statement that measures would be introduced early next week "to relieve the economy." It added: "A change of ministers is out of the question. The rumours spread by some circles about the government's departure have nothing to do with reality. "Any change in the government, as well as attempts at creating an (early) election atmosphere will damage our country."
