Since 1990 we have been preparing an archives of this data for eventual public access for teaching and research, as well as the passerby who has a more than casual interest in Turkey and its past half-century of change. On 31 March 2005 Amnesty International welcomed the news that 312 Syrian Kurds were to be released, reportedly all the Kurds that remained in detention following the March 2004 events ( further information

Turkey: From Religious Empires to Secular Republic
June 17-July 3, 2006 Itinerary Program leader Register Program Leaders: Eric Lund , professor of religion and director of International and Off-Campus Studies, and Cynthia Wales Lund, special collections librarian, Hong Kierkegaard Library Modern-day Turkey was inhabited in ancient times by Hittites, Phrygians and Greeks. Successive empires were a tapestry of civilizations including the Romans, Byzantine Greek Christians, Western crusaders, Seljuk Turks, Mongols and Ottoman Turks. This Study Travel program examines the interwoven history and existing remnants of these civilizations. Our itinerary includes Istanbul Ankara , the pleasant Mediterranean coastline and the interior region of Anatolia Turkey known at times as Asia Minor and Anatolia has been a deeply meaningful area to Christians and Muslims. Eric Lund introduces us to the religious underpinnings of these civilizations and the ways in which religious beliefs and practices found expression in art and culture.

Social Issues
Matters of religious expression and identity are controversial issues in Turkey. Although the Turkish government has promoted a secular (nonreligious) state, some pious Muslims have supported greater public expression of religion. For example, they would like public schools to offer religious education and they would like the ban lifted on women covering their head with religious headscarves in schools and government offices. Secularists fear these changes would mark the first steps toward a religious state. The divisions between secularists and pious Muslims once corresponded to a class division between the educated urban elite, which defended the secular state, and the poorer urban and rural populations, which preserved religious tradition. Economic reforms, however, have helped many devout Muslims improve their social and economic status. Thus, the conflict over religious expression has also moved up the social, political, and economic ladder into elite circles.
