"My ancestors were calling me here, my old home was calling me," Zarbozan says about his decision to return to the village and open his taverna. "This way I can help keep my village alive."
Up until the early 1990’s he still had to obtain a special permit from the Turkish government if he wanted to visit his birthplace, Viglis says. Today, he says, the situation has changed. "People are coming back here to retire," he says with a smile. "It makes them live longer." Editor’s Note : Yigal Schleifer is a freelance journalist based in Istanbul.

Turkey is the meeting place of several cultures. With the passage of time, it has imbibed the essence, ideas and beliefs from its several invaders . the Hittite, Roman, Byzantine, SelJuk and the Ottomans, in its own fabric. Moreover, its unique position between the two continents of east and west, makes diversity its other name. This diversity is reflected in the country.s literature, music, art and architecture. Ottoman literature was mostly religious and was written in ornamental language. Ottoman court music also reflected religious themes. It was pompous. Turku music mainly implies the traditional folk music with a dash of contemporary urbanity. The dominance of television and other devices have suppressed the tradition of Turkish Troubadour, but their songs are popular till date and they are even performed and recorded. Of the Ottoman art, calligraphy was most important. Even the most mundane documents, like the tax paper, became a work of art. Each of the Sultans had their own monogram in stylized script, which is referred to as tugra. Turkish calligraphers have considerable contribution in the development of more ornate styles of calligraphy. Turkey.s cultural scenario went an overnight change in the time of AtatMarbled paper was an art form that flourished in Turkey and so did embroidery. Intricate floral embroidery abounded the items of daily life as well as military equipments like tent, banner. These are preserved in museums of Turkey which are full of several other artworks like colored tiles, poised glass vases, carved wooden mosque doors, glittering illuminated Korans, intricate jewellery and luxurious costumes.

Levent Bastürk This article is a section of my ongoing study on religion, politics, and society in Turkey. It is still in the form of a draft which needs contributions and criticism by all those concerned with the subject.
    Introduction
During the reign of the Motherland Party (M. P., ANAP in its Turkish initials) governments (1983-1991) in Turkey, the hegemony of the state-favored private capital began to erode with the rise of new entrepreneurs who have small or middle town origin and religious outlook. This process has led to important economic and social changes and differentiation within religious segments. As a result, Islamic oriented middle class has realized an important capital accumulation. In this process, tarikat s and cemaat s played important roles by channeling the communal solidarity and consciousness into economic activities in the form of favor and support to the entrepreneurs associated with the tarikat and cemaat . Reciprocal relationships between government circles and the tarikat and cemaat s facilitated the integration of these socio-religious institutions into modern economic activities. Nevertheless, together with the capital accumulation of Islamic oriented segments, consumption habits of religious masses began to transform into bourgeoisie consumption patterns. Especially the leverage and power which the
