It may be divided into the subheadings of folk music and Ottoman music. http://www.kultur.gov.tr/portal/sanat_tr.asp?belgeno=35589 Contemporary Classical Turkish Music Towards the middle of the 19th century, Ottoman music came under the influence of the Western classical tradition, which had by the turn of the century acquired a key role in the transformation of the earlier heavily monophonic structure into a polyphonic one. During the Republican period, the themes of traditional Turkish music became embedded in the musical values of the Western classical tradition and the genre developed a modern polyphonic structure. http://www.kultur.gov.tr/portal/sanat_tr.asp?belgeno=19773

Turkey Accuses Saudis Over Culture
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Filed at 1:47 p.m. ET ANKARA, Turkey (AP) Turkey's culture minister accused Saudi Arabia on Monday of engaging in a ``cultural massacre'' of Ottoman treasures after Saudi authorities tore down a 200-year-old castle in Mecca to make way for a hotel complex. Saudi authorities demolished the al-Ajyad Castle, along with other buildings in a Mecca neighborhood close to holy shrines in the city, a few weeks ago to allow for the construction of a trade center and hotel to accommodate Muslim pilgrims. Turkey's Culture Minister Istemihan Talay said his country was lodging a protest with UNESCO the U.N. agency responsible for the preservation of cultural relics to force an international condemnation of Saudi Arabia. ``This is a crime against humanity, and UNESCO should expose this disgraceful and ugly destruction and cultural massacre,'' Talay told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. A Saudi diplomat in Ankara said the embassy had no immediate response but may issue a statement later. Officials in Saudi Arabia could not be reached for comment. Talay said ``there is a similarity between the Taliban's destruction of the Buddha statues in Afghanistan and the Saudi authorities' enmity toward this legacy of the Ottoman era.''

Turkish Carpets
Carpet weaving has long traditions in Turkey. Turkish carpets are of excellent quality and design and are rivalled only by Persian carpets. This page will look at the carpet weaving tradition among the peoples of Turkey and Central Asia: how the carpets are made, what determines their value, and some of the historical and cultural context within which this folk art has blossomed.

Marco Polo noted the fine quality of Turkish carpets in his writings in 1271. A large number of Turkish and Persian carpets were being sent to Europe as early as the 16th century. The increased trade relations with Europe and the strong western orientation of some of the Ottoman emperors clearly influenced some production and designs. Still, carpet weaving has been around a very long time and is an established tradition in the fabric of life in the carpet producing areas of Turkey, Persia, Turkestan and the Caucasus.
The 1949 discovery of the Pazryk carpets established that carpet weaving has existed in the area at least since the 4th century BC. Historically, the Turks moved to present day Anatolia from Central Asia, their carpet weaving traditions following them westward to Turkey and Persia, where they ultimately reached their highest expression. Similarly, influences from the Far East reached Europe primarily through Constantinople, which was the gateway to Europe as well being the final stop in the so called Silk Route, the long trade route that ran from China through Central Asia to Anatolia.

The European Union, Turkey and Islam Netherlands Scientific Council for Government Policy This report is a full translation of De Europese Unie, Turkije en de islam, that was officially presented to the Dutch government on June 21, 2004 by the Netherlands Scientific Council for Government Policy. The Council is an independent advisory body for the Dutch government which provides solicited and unsolicited advice on developments which may affect society in the long term. Officially, Islam does not play a role in the decision whether to accept Turkey as a member state of the European Union (EU). Yet many people wonder if a Muslim country such as Turkey would really fit into the European Union. Is Turkish Islam compatible with democracy, human rights and the separation of state and religion? The central question of this report, therefore, is whether the fact that the majority of its population is Muslim forms a hindrance to Turkish accession to the European Union.

As the Bush Administration's push for war against Iraq gains momentum, the people of Turkey get more and more uneasy. Bridging the landscape between Europe and Asia, Turkey shares part of its southern border with Iraq. This puts them uncomfortably close to the battle zone, making the Turkish nation a political and strategic hot spot. Already, its location has significantly affected talks among NATO members, as Turkey knows such a war would severely undermine the nation's vitality with the imminent waves of refugees and loss of tourism and trading dollars. Although this nation suffered violent skirmishes between local rebels and Turkish authorities in 1999, along with some negative effects from U.S. air strikes on Afghanistan since 2001, those impacts would likely pale in comparison to the fallout from a U.S. war on Iraq. With Turkey's long history and rich culture, it's no wonder they're nervous over what they risk losing. Located between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean Sea, for millennia this region has thrived as a trading and cultural center. Travelers can see signs of its past from its ancient fortresses and mosques to its spice bazaars to its arts, and to its mix of traditional and contemporary lifestyles.

By Roger Hardy
BBC regional analyst The crisis that has prompted Turkey's early elections, and the demise of Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit's government, throws a harsh light on the underlying weaknesses of Turkish political culture.
Perhaps what is different this time is that external pressures for change are so intense
It is a culture whose abiding features are paternalism and patronage, a culture where ageing patriarchs continue to hold sway. It is a culture apparently caught between hardline nationalists on one side, and Islamists on the other, and where the parties of the centre have never managed to get their act together. It is a culture where the military have become an alibi for the mistakes of the politicians, who can always say: "If we make a mess of things, the generals will save the day." None of this is news to Turkish voters, who have long been disenchanted with their self-seeking politicians.

  • The simplest form of greek temple is the Temple in antis (A), in which the naos (cella) is preceded by a pronaos (antechamber) flanked by forward projections (antea) of its side walls. There are also examples of a Double anta temple (D), with antea at each side.
Where there is row of columns in front of the antea (one column in front of each of the antea, with two or four columns in between) the temple is known as Prostyle (C).
If there is a similar row of columns on the rear end of the temple it is known as Amphiprostyle (F). From the second half of the 7th century BCE the classical form was the Peripteral (B) temple, in which the cella was surrounded on all four sides by a colonnade (peristasis) (Parthenon, Athens). The Dipteral temple (E) has a double row of columns on all four sites (Temple of Artemis).
A further type of temple is the Tholos (G), on a circular ground-plan (Epidauros, Delphi).

Japan-Turkey Relations
June 2005
Basic Data
General
Japan and the Republic of Turkey have maintained good relations for over a century. Since the 1980s, in particular, there has been wide-ranging interaction between the two countries, including visits by eminent persons, as well as economic and cultural exchange. This exchange has been increasing since a visit to Turkey by Foreign Minister Shintaro Abe in 1983. Turkey's former premier Turgut –zal (prime minister 1983-89, president 1989-93, died April 1993), who was familiar with Japanese affairs, also played an important role in the growth of the relationship.
There have been various exchanges of visits by eminent persons, such as the visits of Prince and Princess Mikasa and Prince and Princess Tomohito of Mikasa to Turkey. Recent Japanese visitors to Turkey include Prime Minister Toshiki Kaifu and Foreign Minister Taro Nakayama in 1990, and Foreign Minister Yukihiko Ikeda in May 1996, and Director-General of National Land Agency Hisaoki Kamei in January 1998.
Turkey is regarded as a country friendly to Japan. A relatively recent event that illustrated the extent of Turkey's friendship with Japan occurred in March 1985 during the Iran-Iraq War. As hostilities escalated, foreign airlines maintained a policy of giving first priority to their own nationals and refused to carry Japanese passengers. Turkey rescued 215 Japanese nationals by making available seats on special Turkish Airlines flights.
