F or more than 30 years Turkey has been constructing over 100 dams in southeast Anatolia, both to help solve the energy crisis and to provide the irrigation water necessary for regional development. One of these dams is being built on the Euphrates River. Called the Bireçik dam, after the nearby town of Bireçik, it has caused the inundation of the outskirts of Zeugma, an ancient town 800 metres away. Turkish and foreign archaeologists have worked on rescue excavations in this town, which is famous for its mosaics, but smugglers had already put Zeugma on the map long before either the dam or the archaeologists. The plundering of mosaics from Zeugma stretches back as far as the nineteenth century. One of the most important of these is a panel depicting the sea god Poseidon surrounded by personifications of Roman provinces within medallions. This mosaic is currently on exhibition, in pieces, in St Petersburg and Berlin. Then, for the last 13 years, archaeologists from Gaziantep Museum have been forced to undertake sporadic rescue excavations in response to illegal digging and smuggling. Attributions used in various museum catalogues to describe the origins of mosaics, such as 'East Mediterranean', 'near Syria', 'said to be from East Turkey' probably, in fact, refer to Zeugma. For example, there is the second-century AD mosaic in the North Carolina Museum of Art, said to be 'probably from East Turkey'.

Among the prominent statesmen of the 20th century, few articulated the supreme importance of culture as did Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, founder of the Turkish Republic, who stated: "Culture is the foundation of the Turkish Republic." His view of culture encompassed the nation's creative legacy as well as the best values of world civilization. It stressed personal and universal humanism. "Culture," he said, " is a basic element in being a person worthy of humanity," and described Turkey's ideological thrust as "a creation of patriotism blended with a lofty humanist ideal." To create the best synthesis, Atatürk underlined the need for the utilization of all viable elements in the national heritage, including the ancient indigenous cultures, and the arts and techniques of the entire world civilization, past and present. He gave impetus to the study of earlier civilizations of Anatolia including Hittite, Phrygian, Lydian and others. Pre-Islamic culture of theTurks became the subject of extensive research which proved that, long before the Seljuk and Ottoman Empires, the Turks had already created a civilization of their own. Atatürk also stressed the folk arts and folklore of the countryside as a wellspring of Turkish creativity.

    Culture of Turkey
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
The culture of Turkey is derived from various elements of the Ottoman Empire European , and the Islamic traditions. The nation was modernized primarily by Mustafa Kemal Atat¼rk , as he successfully transformed a religion -driven former Ottoman Empire into a modern nation-state with a very strong separation of state and religion

    • Religion Art edit
      Religion
      Main article: Islam in Turkey
Turkey is around 98% Muslim , and so this plays a large role in day to day life for most people. However, when Kemal Atat¼rk was elected in 1928, he started a new form of Kemalist government, that emphasized secularism - this change included legislation such as the hat law and others which focused on making physical changes in Turkish society so as to appear more "modern" and secular, thinking that mental change would follow. Atat¼rk (which translates to "Father of Turkey") is revered in Turkey, and speaking ill of him is likely to get you in serious social, if not legal, trouble. Because of these different historical factors playing important roles in defining Turkish identity, the culture of Turkey is an interesting combination of clear efforts to be "modern" and western European, combined with the necessity felt of maintaining their religious and historical values. edit
      Art
In the first years of the republic, a large amount of resources was invested into the fine arts, such as paintings, sculptures and architecture, amongst other things. This was done as both a process of modernization and creating a cultural identity.

Although Anatolia and Thrace hold cultural traces dating back at least 400,000 years, neither the results of early investigations that started in the first half of the 19th century, nor the data generated by current surveys and excavations are well organized or easily accessible. Locations of many sites are unknown, and many of them have been destroyed or are being destroyed at this very moment. The most important step we have to take to stop this process is to collect and compile cultural heritage information to establish a central inventory: if we can not document, we can not protect. With this project, all archaeological settlements of Turkey (mounds, monuments, tumuli, cemeteries, etc.) are being thoroughly documented.

    Turkey History and Culture
History The first major civilization in Anatolia was that of the Hittites, about 1900 to 1200 BC, which originated in the central plateau. The Ottomans emerged in history as leaders of Turks who fought the Byzantines in northwestern Anatolia. The Ottoman Empire reached its peak during the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent, and the social, administrative, and governmental institutions that had been evolving since the 14th century were formalized in a series of codes till the end of the century.

    CULTURE
Being 'Turkish' seems to be a geographical label as much as anything else. Everybody and their uncle have been through Anatolia in the last 5.000 years and the result is a rich and diverse culture, drawing on influences beyond analysis. It's important however to remember that you're essentially dealing with a modern Turkey that is less than 100 years old. 1998 saw the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the founding of the Turkish Republic, an event which almost all Turks, no matter what their political beliefs, see as the point at which the idea of 'Turkey' was preserved and the country as a whole brought into the 20th Century. In conversation with Turks you'll often hear the newness or youth of the country referred to as the reason for many things you'll remark upon. 99% of Turks are Muslim. Turkey is however a militantly secular country and life here is far removed from that under fundamentalist regimes. This is a key factor if you want to achieve any understanding of the way that politics and society work here. At times you'll forget that you're in an Islamic country and only be reminded next time you hear the call to prayer, broadcast through a dodgy PA system from the nearest mosque. The mix of cultural influences and traditions here is one of the things that draws tourists to the country and, well, come and see for yourself.
