March 10, 1997 - Hammamet, Tunisia (near Tunis)
We have finally made it to Africa! Or, at least the tourist part of North Africa. More on that to follow. Friday we took the ferry from Marseilles. It is a very expensive ferry, in fact it's cheaper to fly from France to Tunis than to take the boat. So, most people taking the boat are there because they want to have their vehicles with them. In the case of returning Tunisians, they are "loaded to the gunwales" with stuff they buy in Europe and take home. Typical vehicles have huge bundles tied 2 metres high on the roof and overflowing the sides as well as being stuffed full to the roof inside. We cleared customs with no problems at all, (and no inspection), but there were long rows of cars being unloaded and inspected when we were leaving. When we saw all the forms we had to fill out for Tunisia (in Arabic and French captions), we were a little apprehensive, but everyone at the dock was polite and helpful (and all spoke French, which helped). The whole process took only about half an hour, and we discovered we had filled in some forms unnecessarily, since they gave them back to us. Unlike Spain, Grant has to do all the talking (I am only a woman, after all!), which is very relaxing for me. We found the road to our destination fairly easily, as the signs were in both French and Arabic, and arrived at the hotel within a couple of hours of docking.

Overview of Tunisian food and ingredients.

Food
Tunisian cooking is a blend of European, Oriental and desert dweller's culinary traditions. Its distinctive spicy fieriness comes from neighbouring Mediterranean countries and the many civilizations who have ruled Tunisian land Phoenician, Roman, Arab, Turkish, French, and the native Berber. Many of the cooking styles and utensils began to take shape when the ancient tribes were nomads. Nomadic people were limited in their cooking by what locally made pots and pans they could carry with them. A ::I is really the name of a conical-lidded pot, although today we apply the same word to what is cooked in it. Unlike other North African cuisine, Tunisian food is spicy hot. There is an old wife's tale that says a husband can judge his wife's affections by the amount of hot peppers she uses when preparing his food. If the food becomes bland then a man may believe that his wife no longer loves him. However when the food is prepared for guests the hot peppers are decreased to suit the more delicate palate of the visitor. Couscous is the national dish of Tunisia and can be prepared in a dozen different ways. It is cooked in a special kind of double boiler called a

German arrest over Tunisia blast
Elissia, an eight-year-old German girl, was among those injured in the blast BERLIN, Germany German police have arrested a man in connection with a truck explosion at a synagogue in Tunisia that killed 15 people, including 10 German tourists. The suspect whose identity is unknown was arrested in the western city of Duisburg as police raided five homes in Germany on Monday. The man had been under observation for some time, federal prosecutors said. No formal charges have been made. Prosecutors are questioning the man and have 24 hours from the time of the arrest to charge the suspect or release him. Germany's Stern magazine said police traced a phone call from the driver or passenger in the truck to a contact in Germany who had links to Islamist circles. Belgium pegged back by Tunisia
Glen De Boeck congratulates Wilmots after Belgium go ahead OITA, Japan (CNN) Belgium and Tunisia ended deadlocked at 1-1 under the roof of the Big Eye Stadium in Oita to leave Group H wide open going into the final round of matches. Belgium led for just four minutes before being pegged back in the 17th minute by a brilliant curling free-kick. And as the humidity slowed down the game in the second half, both teams looked happy to settle for a draw. Raouf Bouzaiane's left foot strike his first international goal was richly deserved as Tunisia, fighting to stay in the competition after losing their first match 2-0 to Russia, were quicker and created more chances before the break.

Guinea join Tunisia in last eight
Story Tools TUNIS, Tunisia (AP) A late equalizer from Titi Camara sent Guinea into the quarterfinals of the African Nations Cup alongside hosts Tunisia after the two teams played to a 1-1 draw in their last Group A. That meant newcomers Rwanda were eliminated despite a 1-0 win over Congo, clinched by Abel Said's second half goal. Former Marseille, Liverpool and West Ham striker Camara scored his third goal in three matches with just six minutes left. But the elimination didn't spoil Rwanda's upbeat mood at the end of their first international tournament since over half a million citizens of the small Central African country were killed in a genocide 10 years ago "The players are dancing and singing," said Said. "It has been a great tournament for us. It is no shame that we are going home." Tunisia lost their first points in the tournament but still finished top of the group and earned the right to play their quarterfinal match in the capital. The Carthage Eagles finished with seven points, followed by Guinea with five and Rwanda with four. Congo lost all three group games. Tunisia showed the depth of their squad, playing a solid match despite major changes to the lineup that beat both Rwanda and Congo.

The Tunisia synagogue was filled with tourists at the time of the blast Story Tools
PARIS, France (CNN) The brother of the man believed to have killed at least 18 people in a suicide truck bomb attack in Tunisia has been placed under investigation for being an accomplice to murder, according to French judicial sources. Walid Naouar, 22, is the brother of Nizar Naouar, the man authorities believe drove a truck full of fuel into a synagogue in Tunisia last April. At least 18 people, including a dozen German tourists, were killed in that terrorist act. The attack, which took place on the Tunisian island of Djerba, has been linked to al Qaeda. Statements on a Web site believed linked to the organization claim credit for the attack. German authorities say that hours before he drove the truck into the synagogue, Nizar Naouar spoke by telephone with Khalid Sheikh Mohammad, a senior al Qaeda leader believed to be one of the masterminds of the September 11 attacks. Walid Naouar was placed under investigation by a French anti-terrorism judge on Tuesday night. Under French law, being placed under investigation is one step from being formally charged.
