Fresh News TUNIS: The modern capital What is Tunis, Tunisia's capital? Is it the reminiscents of the French protectorate, which is still expanding as the modern city. Or is it the suq , the old town, one of the Arab worlds best (as long as you don´t want to shop handicrafts)? The truth is somewhere in between, Tunis is neither very Arab, nor African. It is not European either, even though Tunisians might tell you so. Tunis is highly functional, effective, clean and is mixing the old and the new, all at the same time, all over. Tunis is not a typical tourist site, but tourists going to places like Hammamet and Sousse , often go on day trips to the capital with their tour operators. When entering Tunis keep your eyes open for the efficiency, the cleanliness, the lack of beggars, and all the women wearing modern garments. Depending on your preferences, visit the Bardo museum , which is nice, but not big. Or the zoo, in the northern part of the city, which is very charming, well kept, and with far more animals than you would expect to find before entering.

Tunisia synagogue toll rises to 7
TUNIS, Tunisia Tunisia is seeking to deflect suspicions that a blast that killed at least seven people outside North Africa's oldest synagogue site was a suicide attack. The country's eight daily newspapers all repeated the government explanation that the blast was an accident when a tanker carrying cooking gas blew up. But Israeli officials said they believed the explosion was a terrorist assault. A Tunisian tour guide died overnight of injuries sustained in the blast, a tourism official said, taking the confirmed death toll to seven. Four German tourists, a policeman and the driver of the tanker died when the truck blew up outside the El Ghriba Jewish shrine on Thursday on the resort island of Djerba, according to Tunisian authorities. In Berlin, a spokeswoman for the German foreign ministry said an 11-year-old boy died of his injuries early on Friday and said two German women were confirmed dead and a third missing.

EgyptAir jet crashes in Tunisia; 18 dead
An official inspects luggage at the site. TUNIS, Tunisia (CNN) An EgyptAir jet crashed on a hillside outside Tunisia's capital Tuesday as the pilot attempted to make an emergency landing, killing at least 18 people, a government official said. At least 25 injured passengers were evacuated to hospitals, Tunisian Communications Agency official Oussama Romdhani told CNN. All 64 passengers and crew on board the Cairo-to-Tunis flight have been accounted for. The Boeing 737-500's landing gear had failed to open during the approach into Tunis-Carthage airport and the pilot had made another circuit before attempting a fresh landing when the plane crashed, airport officials said. The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board said it was sending a team of investigators to assist in the investigation. NTSB officials and others from the Federal Aviation Administration, Boeing and General Electric Engines are part of the team.

Tunisia clinch Nations Cup triumph
Story Tools RADES, Tunisia Hosts Tunisia won the African Nations Cup final on Saturday, beating Morocco 2-1 to spark wild scenes of celebration. It was the first Nations Cup title for Tunisia, hosting the event for the third time, and a triumph for coach Roger Lemerre 15 months after being sacked by France following their dismal World Cup exit. Ziad Jaziri hit the winning goal after 52 minutes, profiting from a bad error by the Moroccan goalkeeper Khalid Fouhami who spilt a tame cross into his path. Tunisia had led after five minutes when Francileudo dos Santos headed home a cross by Brazilian-born compatriot Clayton. Youssef Mokhtari equalized seven minutes before halftime. Mokhtari's fourth goal of the tournament was a diving header from Youssef Hadji's cross. Morocco struggled to launch a second comeback, consistently playing the ball to the edge of the box but then running up against a tight Tunisian defense. As the game drew to a close, Tunisia missed several chances to add a third goal with quick counter-attacks, but they held out after four minutes of stoppage time.

Eight arrested over Tunisia blast
The synagogue has been an historic and holy Jewish site for the past 2,000 years Story Tools
PARIS, France French intelligence agents have arrested eight suspects in connection with a Tunisian synagogue attack in which 21 tourists died, interior ministry sources said. The suspects were detained near Lyon in south-central France and were being questioned by agents from France's counterintelligence service, known as the DST. No further details were immediately available. Fourteen Germans, five Tunisians and a Frenchman were killed when a tanker containing cooking gas exploded near the historic and holy Jewish site on Djerba last April. A group linked to Islamic militant group al-Qaeda claimed responsibility for the attack. The Ghriba synagogue was full of tourists at the time of the blast. Djerba, about 375 miles (600 km) south of Tunis, is the symbolic hub of the Muslim north African nation's approximately 2,000-strong Jewish community. An Interior Ministry statement said documents seized during the arrests in the Lyon region seemed to make a direct link between the suspects and the bombing, Reuters said.
