Boumnijel back for Tunisia
TUNIS, Tunisia (Reuters) Tunisia have recalled goalkeeper Ali Boumnijel for the first time since the last World Cup to replace captain Chokri El Ouaer, who announced a surprise retirement this week. El Ouaer on Friday said a back problem had forced him to retire and that he would not be going to the World Cup. Ironically, El Ouaer had replaced Boumnijel as Tunisia's first choice goalkeeper just before the 1998 World Cup finals. Boumnijel was named in a group of 29 players who will go to Vittel in France from Monday for a week-long training camp. But Boumnijel, who plays for French team Bastia, will not be joining up with the team until after the French Cup final on May 11.

Russia too strong for Tunisia
Heads up for Tunisia's Riadh Bouaziz (left) and Titov, who got Russia's first goal KOBE, Japan (Reuters) Russia made a solid start to their World Cup campaign when they cruised to a 2-0 victory over Tunisia and moved to the top of group H. Second-half goals from Yegor Titov and Valery Karpin, from the penalty spot, secured Russia the victory their dominance warranted, though they impressed only intermittently. In fact, it was not until Tunisia goalkeeper Ali Boumnijel's 59th minute mistake pounced upon by Titov for the breakthrough that Russia settled.

Hosts Tunisia gain place in final
Story Tools TUNIS, Tunisia Hosts Tunisia reached the final of the African Nations Cup with a 5-3 win on penalties over Nigeria after the two sides had drawn 1-1 in their semi-final. Defender Karim Hagui, the youngest member of the squad, converted the winning kick in the shootout to spark off wild scenes of celebration. Tunisia netted all five of their penalties but Nigeria's Peter Odemwingie had his kick saved by the 37-year-old goalkeeper Ali Boumnijel. Tunisia had fought their way back into the match after Nigeria took the lead in the 67th minute through a Jay Jay Okocha penalty, after Kanu had been fouled in the area by Radhi Jaidi. Captain Khaled Badra, who is suspended for the final after picking up a second successive caution, equalised eight minutes from time also from the penalty spot following a foul by Isaac Okoronkwo on Zied Jaziri. Meanwhile, striker Youssef Mokhtari struck twice as Morocco romped to a 4-0 win over Mali to book a place in the first-ever all-north African final.

Introduction
Located on the northern coast of Africa, Tunisia has boundaries with Algeria to the west, Libya to the southeast and the Mediterranean Sea to the north and east.
The Atlas Mountains divide the country into two regions, the well-watered north and the semi-arid south. The northern region, which contains the Kroumirie Forest, Bizerte, and the Medjerda River Valley, is further divided into three subregions: the northwest, with extensive cork forests; the north central, with its fertile grasslands, and the northeast from Tunis to Cap Bon, noted for its livestock, citrus fruits and garden produce.

What was it like?
It was terrific. Go there; you will enjoy. When did you go? Easter week 2001. Why is Hammamet nice? Because it's centrally located, has nice hotels and restaurants, and isn't too big. It's a comfortable place to stay while you're discovering Tunisia. Also, it's often very easy and inexpensive to get there from Europe, since the tour companies have lots of package deals for trips to Hammamet. Is Hammamet very touristy? Parts of it are, especially the medina. There's really no point in visiting the medina unless you feel the need to buy a tacky souvenir. The salesmen there are at least as relentless as in other medinas, butas opposed to elsewhere in Tunisiathere's really nothing to see in Hammamet's medina. Many of the restaurants seem to cater primarily to tourists (with multilingual menus, English-speaking waiters, some non-Tunisian food, etc.); also there are many resort-type hotels, but most of those aren't in the city center. There are also a bunch of souvenir shops near the medina. But only in certain parts of town do you see very many Europeans. Otherwise it's not difficult to feel that you're just in a normal Tunisian city on the coast. What are the people like?
