In their time, the Romans, Arabs, Ottoman Turks and French realised its strategic significance, making it a hub for control over the region. OVERVIEW
FACTS
LEADERS MEDIA French colonial rule came to an end in 1956, and Tunisia was led for three decades by Habib Bourguiba, who insisted on advancing secular ideas, with emancipation for women, the abolition of polygamy and compulsory free education. Married to a Frenchwoman, Bourguiba insisted on an anti-Islamic fundamentalist line, while increasing his own powers to become a virtual dictator. In 1987 he was dismissed on grounds of senility and Zine El Abidine Ben Ali came into office. He continued with a hard line against Islamic extremists, but inherited an economically stable country. Although Tunisia has introduced some press freedoms and has freed a number of political prisoners, human rights groups say the authorities tolerate no dissent, harrassing government critics as well as rights activists.

Geology
Ground Penetrating Radar Study in North Africa
A ground penetrating radar (GPR) study was conducted spring of 1994 near the village of Tozeur in Tunisia, a small country in northern most Africa bordering the Mediteranean Sea to the north and east, the Atlas mountains to the west, and the Sahara Desert to the south. The approximate location of the Tunisian study area is shown on the regional map to the left as a white box. The location of Tunisia relative to the rest of the world is shown in red on the global index map below. The purpose of the georadar investigation was to image fluvial, lacustrine, and eolian subsurface stratigraphy using surface penetrating radar methods, and make this information available to a team of geologists and other scientists interested in determining the climatic history of the region and any possible relationship to global warming. Tunisia synagogue blast kills 5
TUNIS, Tunisia (CNN) Five people were killed on Thursday when a truck filled with natural gas blew up near a historic synagogue in Tunisia, a U.S. Embassy official in Tunis has confirmed. Tunisian officials think it may have been an accident, but Israeli officials are saying they believe the incident was a terror attack. Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Michael Melchior said the blast near the historic El Ghriba synagogue on Djerba, an island off the south-eastern Tunisian coast, was a deliberate anti-Jewish attack, according to the Israeli daily newspaper Ha'aretz. "The wave of recent anti-Semitic events reached its peak today with the cruel murder of tourists at the ancient synagogue of Djerba in Tunis," Melchior is quoted as saying. A Foreign Ministry official also told CNN that the incident was a terror strike.
