Tunisia: Introduction
Background: Following independence from France in 1956, President Habib BOURGIUBA established a strict one-party state. He dominated the country for 31 years, repressing Islamic fundamentalism and establishing rights for women unmatched by any other Arab nation. In recent years, Tunisia has taken a moderate, non-aligned stance in its foreign relations. Domestically, it has sought to diffuse rising pressure for a more open political society.

Tunisia Climate
The climate is Mediterranean ranging from humid and sub-humid in the north to semi-arid in the central areas and arid (desert) in the south. The coastal areas are influenced by the Mediterranean (cooler during summer and warmer during winter than the interior zones). The yearly average precipitation ranges from 1000 mm in the north to 50 mm in the south. Most of the precipitation occurs during the fall and winter seasons. The average temperature is 11.4 °C in December and 29.3 °C in July. Geography
Tunisia has about 1.200 km coast all along the Mediterranean sea in the north and the west. The Dorsale Tunisienne is a mountains chain (up to 1.200 m elevation) crossing the country from north east (Cap Bon) to central west. Soil type is diversified ranging from sandy to loam to clay. Red Mediterranean soil is largely present. Horticulture
Many horticulture activities can be found in Tunisia : fruit growing (olive tree represents about 80% of the total fruit acreage); vegetables; protected crops (including geothermal heating practices); flowers. Distribution of Horticulture
All around the country. Olive tree (rainfed) is largely spread in the country. Citrus and grape production is located mainly in the Cap Bon area and dates in the oasis located in the south. Other fruit species are cultivated in the northern and the central areas. Vegetables are spread along the coast and the inland irrigated perimeters in the north and central zones. Protected vegetables production is located along the coast and the geothermal water for early vegetables production is used in the southern areas.

It is the easternmost and smallest of the nations situated along the Atlas mountain range, bordering Algeria , to the west, and Libya to the south and east. Forty per cent of the country is comprised by the Sahara desert , with much of the remainder consisting of particularly fertile soil , with easily accessible coasts . Both played a prominent role in ancient times , first with the famous Phoenician city of Carthage , and later, as the Africa Province , it became known as the bread basket of the Roman Empire . It is thought that the name Tunis originated from Berber , meaning either a geographical promontory , or, "to spend the night."

    Position :

Tunisia is located in the extreme north-east of Africa, in the center of the Mediterranean basin. Tunisia, marked off by the thirtieth and the thirty-seventh degrees of north latitude, is washed in the north and in the east by the Mediterranean.
    Relief :
Mountainous and very green in the north, the country becomes progressively lower and drier towards the south. We distinguish three major parts:
    • The High-Tell which covers the north part,
    • The Central Tunisia, region of High and Low steppes ending on the coast by the Sahel,
    • Finally, the meridian Tunisia, determined in the north by the region of the Chotts. It's the country of the great desert spaces, luxuriant palm groves crouched around the few water points.

The highest point of Tunisia, Jebel Chaambi, does not accede 1.544 metres and the two third of the country are made up by plains.
