A n ideal climate, a long and gentle seacoast, Tunisia , the northernmost country of Africa has for over 3000 years witnessed the passage of Phoenicians, Romans, Vandals, Byzantines, Turks, Spanish and French. They came as fugitive s or adventurers, to conquer or to claim, warriors and missionaries, traders and farmers each leaving a part of their story in stone or mosaics , on hills of Carthage and the threshold of the Sahara.
This heritage, Tunisia's greatest wealth has been held in trust and preserved in hundreds of sites and museums from the small Punic museum in Utica to the vast collections of the prestigious National Museum of Bardo . Most Museums are closed on Mondays, whereas many on-site archeological museums and ruins are open all week. An entrance fee is usually charged and a caretaker will often act as guide.

WORLDGUIDE Introduction See Image Gallery Events Transport Money Essential Info RELATED Thorn Tree Forum Postcards Travel Links Tunisia's list of attractions would do justice to a country twice its size. From the Roman-era hot springs at Hamman Mellegue to the space-age sets of Star Wars (parts of which were filmed at Matmata), its lush-to-lunar landscapes have seen more action than the New World nations combined. Spend a few days here and you'll agree: daydreaming at the famous Roman ruins of Carthage and El-Jem is almost as good as stepping into Virgil's Aeneid and knocking one back with Dido, while a day's dawdling on the north coast's beaches will leave you wondering why Hannibal ever left.

Modern-day Tunisia was the center of the Carthaginian civilization, which challenged the dominance of both the Greek and Roman empires in the Mediterranean between the 6th and 1st centuries BC; Carthage itself was approximately 16km (10 miles) north of the present capital, Tunis. During the colonial era, Tunisia was ruled by a hereditary monarchy, until the French made the country a protectorate in 1883. Nationalist pressure for independence began in 1934, with the formation of the (New Constitution) Party (NDP) under the leadership of Habib Bourguiba. Internal self-government was granted in 1955; independence as a constitutional monarchy under the Bey of Tunis came a year later. In 1957, the Bey was overthrown and a republic proclaimed, with Bourguiba as president.
Despite independence, the French insisted on holding onto a naval base at Bizerta, on the northern coast. This was lost in 1963, after a naval blockade by the Tunisians and several months of heavy fighting. The ruling

    CULTURE ART GALLERIES
There are presently about 50 art Galleries hosting all kinds of exhibitions by international and Tunisian artists. Among these galleries, the "House of Live Arts" in Belvedere-Tunis, the "Galerie Yahia" in Tunis, the "Galerie Essaadi" in Carthage, the "Galeries Cherif Fine Arts and Ammar Farhat" in Sidi Bou Said, the "Espace Ken" in Bouficha, the "Espace Mille-Feuille" in La Marsa and the "Galerie la Kasbah" in Sfax. CINEMA
The Carthage international film festival, created in 1962, is held every two years. It is also in Tunisia that the Federation of African Film Directors was born in 1970. Tunisian cinema, though relatively young, is a very rich and diversified form of artistic expression. Productions include most genres (action films, social exposes, dramas, political essays, etc.). Films, like Ferid Boughedir's "Halfaouine", and Moufida Tlatli's "The Silences of the Palace" have won international acclaim. Tunisia is increasing the shooting location for major international film productions. Recently shot fims include Star Wars and The English Patient.
