THROUGH THE GLASS DARKLY:
An Archaeological Pub Crawl of Great Britain
“When you have lost your inns drown your empty selves, for you will have lost the last of England” - Hilaire Belloc
Of course one could travel about Britain and maintain an absolutely solemn view of the country's great treasures of ancient architecture, but how much fun would that be, and how much of a real picture of the place would it provide? Precious little, say we. To understand the British spirit one must understand British spirits, which is to say Beer. From the rich mixture of civilizations that has flourished in this land has emerged the true essence of English life: the village pub, where ales, bitters, porters, stouts, and other hop-and-barley concoctions abound in such profusion as to daunt even the hardiest tippler. Long the bastion of all that is good and true in British culture, the pub occupies the place today that it has held for many centuries, as the spot where society is daily glued together through the medium of beer. To appreciate Britain's heritage to the fullest one must therefore go afoot, or in the later hours of the day aknee, among the pubs, the true heart of the

This Dotterel on the Cairngorms run up to us and allowed itself to be stroked! Photo: Dick Maxfield Day 1: The trip begins at 9 a.m. at Heathrow Airport in London. Our first birdwatching will be at Windsor Great Park, a 5000-acre preserve at Windsor Castle, the largest inhabited castle and one of the finest royal residences in the world. Here we'll look for such common birds as Mistle Thrush, Robin, Blue and Great Tits, Chaffinch and Goldfinch. In the afternoon we'll drive north to the beautiful university town of Cambridge with its spires, towers and courtyards. Evensong in the glorious chapel of King's College should be an inspiring end to our first day. Night in Cambridge. Day 2: After an early morning search for Golden Oriole, the spectacular specialty of the fens, we'll drive to the Brecklands, an area of sandy wastes and heaths and the largest forest in England. This was the first area in Britain to be cultivated by prehistoric man and it contains a number of Neolithic flint mines. The fauna is interesting too, and we could find Stone-curlew, Woodlark, Tree Pipit and Green Woodpecker. We'll finish our tour with a visit to Ely Cathedral, the great glory of Fenland. Night in Cley-next-the-Sea. Days 3-6: Cley, a mecca for British birdwatchers for 200 years, will be our base during the next four days. We'll visit the Norfolk Wildlife Trust Reserve, noted in particular for its reedbeds and saline and freshwater lagoon environments which support breeding Bittern, Avocet, Black-tailed Godwit and Bearded Tit; impressive country houses such as Felbrigg and Blickling Hall; the Norfolk Broads, flooded medieval peat diggings and now the haunt of Marsh Harrier and Britain's only Common Cranes; and Minsmere and Titchwell, the two major reserves of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, where we may see Spoonbill, Spotted Redshank, Nightingale or Mediterranean and Little Gulls. Pre-breakfast and post-dinner options (the latter for Nightjar, Woodcock and Barn Owl) will satisfy even the most addictive birder and allow the less obsessional to relax or explore the many delights of this very attractive area. Nights in Cley.
