The United Kingdom is one of the founding members of the United Nations (UN) and occupies one of the five permanent seats on the United Nations Security Council , the most powerful body in the UN. It is an important contributor to UN peacekeeping operations. Britain also plays an important part in the European Union (EU), an organization dedicated to economic cooperation among European nations. Britain’s defense policy rests on membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), along with 15 other member states, including the United States. As a member of the

Henry VIII
House of Tudor Reigned: 1509-1547 Henry VIII, born in 1491, was the second son of Henry VII and Elizabeth of York. The significance of Henry's reign is, at times, overshadowed by his six marriages: dispensing with these forthwith enables a deeper search into the major themes of the reign. He married Catherine of Aragon (widow of his brother, Arthur) in 1509, divorcing her in 1533; the union produced one daughter, Mary. Henry married the pregnant Anne Boleyn in 1533; she gave him another daughter, Elizabeth, but was executed for infidelity (a treasonous charge in the king's consort) in May 1536. He married Jane Seymour by the end of the same month, who died giving birth to Henry's lone male heir, Edward, in October 1536. Early in 1540, Henry arranged a marriage with Anne of Cleves, after viewing Hans Holbein's beautiful portrait of the German princess. In person, alas, Henry found her homely and the marriage was never consummated. In July 1540, he married the adulterous Catherine Howard she was executed for infidelity in March 1542. Catherine Parr became his wife in 1543, providing for the needs of both Henry and his children until his death in 1547. The court life initiated by his father evolved into a cornerstone of Tudor government in the reign of Henry VIII. After his father's staunch, stolid rule, the energetic, youthful and handsome king avoided governing in person, much preferring to journey the countryside hunting and reviewing his subjects. Matters of state were left in the hands of others, most notably Thomas Wolsey, Archbishop of York.

ELIZABETH I (r. 1558-1603)
Elizabeth I - the last Tudor monarch - was born at Greenwich on 7 September 1533, the daughter of Henry VIII and his second wife, Anne Boleyn.
Her early life was full of uncertainties, and her chances of succeeding to the throne seemed very slight once her half-brother Edward was born in 1537. She was then third in line behind her Roman Catholic half-sister, Princess Mary. Roman Catholics, indeed, always considered her illegitimate and she only narrowly escaped execution in the wake of a failed rebellion against Queen Mary in 1554. Elizabeth succeeded to the throne on her half-sister's death in November 1558. She was very well-educated (fluent in six languages), and had inherited intelligence, determination and shrewdness from both parents.
Her 45-year reign is generally considered one of the most glorious in English history. During it a secure Church of England was established. Its doctrines were laid down in the 39 Articles of 1563, a compromise between Roman Catholicism and Protestantism.

    Early History
From Murky Beginnings to the Roman Occupation Britain was probably split off from the continent of Europe some 8 millennia ago by continental drift and other natural forces. The early inhabitants, the Iberians, were later to be identified with stories of fairies, brownies, and "little people." These are the people whose ingenuity and enterprise are believed to have created Stonehenge, but despite that great and mysterious monument, little is known about them. They were replaced by the iron-wielding Celts, whose massive invasions around 500 B.C. drove the Iberians back to the Scottish Highlands and Welsh mountains, where some of their descendants still live today. In 54 B.C. Julius Caesar invaded England, but the Romans did not become established here until A.D. 43. They went as far as Caledonia (now Scotland), where they gave up, leaving that land to "the painted ones," or the warring Picts. The wall built by Emperor Hadrian across the north of England marked the northernmost reaches of the Roman Empire. During almost four centuries of occupation, the Romans built roads, villas, towns, walls, and fortresses; they farmed the land and introduced first their pagan religions then Christianity. Agriculture and trade flourished. In Wales the Romans built roads to outlying fortresses at Carmarthen, Llandovery, and other sites, but they stuck to the lowlands and did not set out to subdue the natives of this wild country who took to the hills and mountains. Some of the hill forts established by the Iron Age Celts were still the homes of their descendants, and some of these were very near Roman forts. Remains of many of the hill forts may be seen today.

GREAT BRITAIN Maureen Jones, President of All Horizons Travel is from Great Britain. With a Welsh mother from North Wales and a Scottish father, from the Western Hebrides Isle of Skye, she grew up in both countries. Maureen lived in Lancashire, and went to the University of Liverpool and Edinburgh University. Her father fished in Ireland every year, so she knows that country extremely well. Maureen is a keen gardener, golfer, and loves the theatre for which England is well known. England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland are very different. They speak different languages, dialects, and the food and customs are varied even in a small area. Some parts are better than others for historical sites, scenery and these are the ones I will tell you about. ENGLAND There are lots of tours we can recommend taking. If you don't wnt to go on a bus with other people, then we can book a private car with driver/guide to take you. Anything is possible, it all depends on your budget. I do not recommend renting a car and driving, as it is expensive and challenging in some areas. London - Everyone should visit London it is an exciting city, easy to get around and has lots to do and see. There are 74 theatres and I go to a show every night when I am in town. There are four outstanding symphony orchestras in London, and the ballet and opera companies are among the best in the world. Book the tickets before you leave the US otherwise you may not get seats. We provide this service for our clients.

    Introduction
There are roads that lead to Rome,
But they don’t lead down to the sea; And they take me not to my island-home, So they are not the roads for me. —Alasdair Alpin MacGregor, 1925 Travel to Britain and Ireland: Combine the seafaring rewards of watching sharks, dolphins, porpoises, and whales with the pleasures of exploring castles and hamlets and sipping brews in cozy, wood-panelled pubs on a small-ship cruise around Britain and Ireland, where you can view puffins, manx, shags, fulmars, shearwaters, and sea eagles. Learn to recognize the high-quality Harris tweeds produced on hand looms on the Outer Hebrides Islands and coveted by tailors in London and Oxford. Sail the historic seacoasts of England and Ireland, admiring their basalt pillars, sea lochs, caves, and rocky peaks. Visit the Forbidden Island of Rum and observe otter, deer, and the breeding sites of sea eagles. Tour ancient abbeys, Stonehenge, and the extraordinary Callanish Standing Stones, one of the best-preserved prehistoric sites in Britain.

The government has also invested much time and effort in the Northern Ireland peace process but the mutual hostility between loyalists and nationalists has proved exceptionally difficult to overcome. At present, the process is in abeyance after local elections in the autumn of 2003 returned the Democratic Unionist Party as the main representative of the protestant/loyalist population and Sinn Fein as the main catholic/nationalist party. For the time being, the province is being ruled directly from London. What is reasonably certain, however, is that there will be no return to violence which scarred the province for over a quarter of a century.
