To discover and develop new effective, low-cost drugs for the treatment of tuberculosis
Mycobacterium tuberculosis , the etiologic agent of tuberculosis (TB), is responsible for more deaths than any other single bacterial species. The disease must be treated with multiple drugs to prevent the selection of drug resistant strains . Drug-sensitive tuberculosis (TB) is usually curable in 6 months if all drugs are taken regularly, however pati ent non-compliance, incorrect prescribing and irregular drug supply can all contribute to treatment failure and the selection for drug-resistant strains . Multiple drug-resistant (MDR) tuberculosis has a much lower cure rate due to the lower efficacy and higher toxicity of the second-line drugs used in its treatment.

What is tuberculosis?
Tuberculosis (TB) is a bacterial infection that is most often found in the lungs (pulmonary TB) but can spread to other parts of the body (extrapulmonary TB). TB in the lungs is easily spread to other people through coughing or laughing. Treatment is often successful, though the process is long. Treatment time averages between 6 and 9 months. Tuberculosis is either latent (dormant) or active.
  • Latent TB means that you have the TB-causing bacteria in your body, but you cannot spread the disease to others. However, you can still develop active TB. Active TB means the infection is spreading in your body and, if your lungs are infected, you can spread the disease to others.

Tuberculosis (Tb) is a serious infection caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium tuberculosis . Unfortunately, the incidence of tuberculosis has been increasing in recent years and there are an increasing number of cases of multi-drug resistance tuberculosis. Related Articles Common Infections School Problems Internet Links About Pediatrics Is Your Child at Risk? Tuberculosis Fact Sheet Routine testing for Tb with a tuberculin skin test is now only recommended in children who are at high risk for having the illness. Risk factors include being exposed to an infected adult, contact with someone who has been in prison, contact with the homeless, and travel to countries with a high rate of tuberculosis, including Mexico, India, Vietnam, China, Philippines, and many countries in Latin America, Asia, the Middle East and Africa. Adopted children from any high risk area should also be tested, including Romania and Russia. Also, all contacts of a person with a positive tuberculin skin test should also be tested. Even with a negative test, some younger children may need a chest x-ray and treatment if they were recently exposed to someone with tuberculosis and that person was thought to be contagious. Negative skin tests may need to be repeated in three months.

Introduction: Tuberculosis
Tuberculosis: Tuberculosis (TB) is a bacteria that usually causes disease in the lung. Many people become symptom-free carriers of the TB bacteria. Although common and deadly in the third world, tuberculosis was almost non-existent in the developed world, but has been making a recent resurgence. Certain drug-resistant strains are emerging and people with immune suppression such as AIDS or poor health are becoming carriers. Tuberculosis: Tuberculosis (TB), a chronic bacterial infection, causes more deaths worldwide than any other infectious disease. TB is spread through the air and usually infects the lungs, although other organs are sometimes involved. Some 2 billion people — one-third of the world's population — are infected with the TB organism, Mycobacterium tuberculosis Researching symptoms of Tuberculosis: Further information about the symptoms of Tuberculosis is available including a list of symptoms of Tuberculosis , other diseases that might have similar symptoms in

Tuberculosis (TB)
Mycobacterium tuberculosis . TB can attack any part of the body, but most often it affects the lungs. TB can spread when someone with active TB of the lungs or voicebox coughs, yells, sneezes, or talks and others breathe in the bacteria. People are most likely to become infected with TB if they spend many hours in close contact with someone with TB disease; brief contact usually does not lead to infection. There are two phases of TB: latent TB infection and active TB disease. Both phases can be treated with medication. Only persons with active TB disease can spread TB germs to others. In Minnesota, 199 cases of active TB disease were reported in 2004. The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) has a TB Prevention and Control Program, which collaborates with clinicians and local health departments throughout Minnesota to ensure that persons with TB receive effective and timely treatment and that contact investigations are performed to minimize the spread of TB.
