The story is told from the perspective of the San people whose ancestors created most of the art. The word ‘/Qe’ describes the power associated with God and the supernatural in N/u, a San language of the Northern Cape spoken by fewer than 20 people today. It was suggested for this exhibition by /Una /Khasi-Rooi, her sister Antje /Khasi and other members of the N/u community. Most of the quotations that illuminate the meaning of the rock art in the exhibition are in /Xam, a San language closely related to N/u but no longer spoken. Rock art is found in many parts of Africa. The majority of rock paintings and engravings found in southern Africa can be clearly linked to San beliefs. Also, in this region, within the last 2000 years, engravings and finger-paintings were made by Khoekhoe herders and African farmers.

Other descriptions of South Africa/People Until South African law divided the population into four major racial categories: blacks (African), whites, coloureds, and Asians. Although this law has been abolished, many South Africans still view themselves and each other according to these categories. Black Africans comprise about 79% of the population and are divided into a number of different ethnic groups. Whites comprise about 10% of the population. They are primarily descendants of Dutch French English , and German settlers who began arriving at the Cape in the late 17th century. There is a

South Africa
    A country of southern Africa on the Atlantic and Indian oceans. Originally inhabited by the San and Khoikhoin, the region was settled by various Bantu peoples c. 1500. European settlement began with the Dutch in the mid-17th century. The region passed to Great Britain in 1814 but was hotly contested by descendants of the Dutch settlers in the Boer War (1899–1902), in which Britain took possession of the entire territory, creating the Union of South Africa in 1910. South Africa declared itself a republic in 1961, severed ties with the British Commonwealth, and further consolidated the apartheid system, which was repealed beginning in 1989. An interim constitution ending white rule was adopted in 1993, and the first multiracial elections were held in 1994. Pretoria is the administrative capital; Cape Town, the legislative capital and largest city; and Bloemfontein, the judicial capital. Population: 42,700,000 . South African var tcdacmd="cc=edu;dt";

This serves as the point of expansion for further European settlement of the interior as they seek grazing lands and sources of gold and diamonds throughout the nineteenth century. Unhappy with British colonial policies, Boer farmers found republics on the Transvaal beyond the scope of British domination. Among indigenous communities, the development of large, centralized chiefdoms by Nguni and Zulu peoples results in the overall militarization of society and the implementation of far-flung systems of tribute that concentrate and redistribute forms of wealth such as cattle, beads, and metals. This political concentration results in the adoption of foreign traditions, such as figurative sculpture originating from northern, Tsonga-speaking communities, into Zulu and Nguni material culture. Similar processes of consolidation occur in Madagascar , where a succession of Merina kings places much of the island under Merina control. By the late nineteenth century, however, both Madagascar and the southern African mainland are incorporated into the French and British colonial empires, respectively.

    The United Kingdom clashes with the Boer settlers in a final effort to subdue the independent Boer republics and unite them with its own South African colonies. They are aided by the Tswana and other native populations. Boer women and children are contained in prison camps with poor sanitation and health care; between 1900 and 1901, approximately 28,000 out of 117,000 inmates die of disease. In German southern Africa, (present-day Namibia), thousands of indigenous Herero peoples are massacred by German colonial troops in response to a Herero rebellion against German colonial rule. Lucy Lloyd publishes Specimens of Bushman Folklore , a compilation of interviews with San individuals and sketches of rock paintings accumulated by herself and linguist Wilhelm Bleek in the 1870s. It provides the cornerstone for later study of the San people and the rock art that has been attributed to them.

In 1814 the area was assigned to British rule. The rules and regulations that came with British rule caused a majority of Boers (Dutch settlers) to migrate east to found their own republics, this was named the Great Task. The 1860's brought the first Indian laborers to work on the sugar plantations. The Union of South Africa was formed in 1910. In 1948 a system of apartheid was introduced. South Africa has a mixed environmental heritage. Its national parks, reserves, and botanical gardens are among the best-managed conservation areas in the world, but there are serious environmental problems too. The most serious environmental threats are uncontrolled livestock grazing, rampant urban development, and surface disturbance and pollution associated with mining. Many problems originated from political and socioeconomic policies associated with the apartheid period that ended in 1994. Overpopulation in the former bantustans , or black homelands, led to intensive settlement, livestock grazing, fuelwood cutting, and overfarming on limited areas of land, which in turn led to soil erosion, land degradation, deforestation, desertification, and

Mineral wealth was the foundation of colonial economies throughout Africa. By the time of independence, in the 1960s, the development plans of many African states were dependent upon the mines developed in the colonial era, the foremost being Congo, Gabon, Ghana, Mali, Sierra Leone, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

    A brief account of the life of Robert Moffat (1795 - 1883) a pioneer missionary to southern Africa
    The end of 1995 marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of one of Scotland's greatest missionaries, Robert Moffat. Although less famous than his son-in-law, David Livingstone, Moffat was also a remarkable man.
    His story has all the ingredients of the classic Victorian missionary saga: wild animals and even wilder tribes, exotic customs and bizarre costumes, daring expeditions into the interior, and above all, an indomitable missionary sustained by his trust in an Almighty God. Gardener This was all far removed from the simple realities of Moffat's early life. Born in Ormiston, near Edinburgh, he trained as a gardener and in 1813 secured a job in Cheshire. Alone and far from home, he joined a local Methodist Society and devoted his spare time to reading the Scriptures. Lacking assurance of salvation, it finally came to him 'while poring over the Epistle to the Romans...I felt that, being justified by faith, I had peace with God through the Lord Jesus Christ.' This conversion experience produced in Moffat an intense desire to share the Gospel with those who had never heard. Although he had little formal education, he was accepted by the London Missionary Society, and in late 1816 he set sail for South Africa. Young missionary Moffat was just 21 years old when he arrived in the Cape. He was soon joined by his Cheshire sweetheart, Mary Smith, and they were married in December 1819. For the next 50 years she was to be his faithful partner in mission. Their honeymoon was somewhat unconventional - eight weeks on a wagon towed by twelve humped oxen! They were taking the 800 mile journey to Kuruman, beyond the border of the British colony and close to the Kalahari Desert. Here they were to build a mission station which would be their home for the next half century.

One year ago Survival presented the first 100,000 signatures to the Botswana government. Amongst the supporters are a delegation of Ogiek hunter-gatherers in Kenya. In a statement they say, 'the heart of the Ogiek people goes out to our brothers and sisters the Gana and Gwi Bushmen... Brothers and sisters: do not let your persecutors make you forget who you are: no matter how far away from it you have been taken, the land and life your forefathers gave you belong to you. SOUTH AFRICA'S INDIGENOUS PEOPLE CONDEMN BUSHMAN EVICTIONS
    Two organisations representing some of South Africa's indigenous peoples have spoken out in support of the rights of the Gana and Gwi 'Bushmen' of Botswana to return to their land.
    The Northern Cape Khoisan Council said today, 'We support the campaign against De Beers and the Botswana Government, to persuade the government to rescind their decision to evict the Gwi, Gana and Bakgalagadi from the Central Kalahari Game Reserve..... You also have the support of about thirteen Khoisan organisations in the whole of South Africa to protest against this blatant human rights atrocity.'
    The Northern Cape Khoisan Council is an alliance of first people organisations in the Northern Cape consisting of the San, Nama, Korana, Griqua and Cape Khoi groups.
    Motivation Community Development, another indigenous organisation, added, 'Like our peoples, KhoiSan, Tswana, Sotho and other African peoples of South Africa, we were dispossessed from our lands by colonial forces. This dispossession resulted in the conditions we live in today, so much poverty, depression, unemployment, addictions, crime and violence and being unproductive...... Removal of the Gana, Gwi and Bakgalagadi Peoples from their land will do the same to them as land dispossession did to us.... It makes no difference who does the dispossessing.'
