Tsunamis in the Atlantic Ocean
With the recent December 2004 tsunami that wreaked death and destruction in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and beyond ( view an animation of the tsunami by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) - Apple QuickTime required), many might wonder about tsunamis occurring in the Atlantic Ocean and striking the east coast of the United States; most notably, Maine. Although most people don't put "tsunami" and "Atlantic Ocean" in the same sentence, history and geology tell us that the Atlantic Ocean does experience tsunami activity, albeit on a less catastrophic scale. However, although highly debated in the scientific realm, one of the world's "ticking time bombs" that may trigger a tsunami is located in the Atlantic Ocean! This Geologic Site of the Month provides background information and characteristics of tsunamis, some of their history in the Atlantic Ocean, and several possible locations where tsunamis could be triggered and impact the east coast of the United States in the future.

ISU geology-geography professors explain disaster
By Katelyn Kunesh Published: Thursday, January 20, 2005 Professors from the geology -geography department have been describing tsunamis for ISU students to understand.
"Tsunamis are rather common natural features," Jim Carter, professor of geology-geography said.
"Tsunamis are like earthquakes, they are not very predictable," Carter said.
"Tsunamis result from earthquakes at sea or landslides along the coast," Carter said.
"The issue is that people like to live near the coast for various reasons, such as the harbors, or for recreational purposes and the coast is where tsunamis do the most damage," Carter added.
The coast is a popular residential and vacationing area, unfortunately, individuals on the coast cannot be warned when a tsunami is approaching.

In this section, we try to bring together answers to some frequently asked questions about earthquakes and seismology. In addition to compiling our own answers, we have provided links to useful information on other organizations' WWW servers. If you can't find the answer to your question, feel free to send us some e-mail at www@seismo.berkeley.edu . You should hear from us in a day or two, but we can't promise to answer every question. And questions sent to us are no substitute for doing research on your term paper! You can also contact the USGS through the Ask a Geologist Program. Geologists: Tsunamis little threat here
Region's sea-floor contours would sap wave of its strength By Bruce Lieberman,
Scott LaFee
and David Hasemyer

STAFF WRITERS December 28, 2004 While temblors are part of life in Southern California, tsunamis are not. Only eight tsunamis have reached San Diego County beaches since 1950. None of them carried waves higher than 5 feet by the time they washed onto local beaches. They also fanned out across the Pacific Ocean, but caused sea levels off San Diego to rise only 8 inches, according to the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center in Palmer, Alaska. "What we saw over the weekend was a giant earthquake – a really, really big earthquake," said Jean-Bernard Minster, a geophysicist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla. "(California) faults are a lot less likely to generate a tsunami."

Save a personal copy of this article and quickly find it again with Furl.net. It's free! Save it. On the evening of July 17, 1998, villagers on the northern coast of Papua New Guinea were finishing a quiet day when a magnitude 7.1 earthquake suddenly shook the area and the offshore ocean bottom lurched upwards. At first, the sea receded. Then, within 15 seconds, waves up to 45 feet high surged over the tropical lagoons, battered people with debris, swept them inland, and killed more than 2,200. That was a tsunami, the most powerful wave in the world. Usually triggered by earthquakes, tsunamis bear little resemblance to regular ocean waves, which are a mere ripple by comparison, and have nothing to do with tides, even though they are often inaccurately referred to as tidal waves. They can be huge and travel at enormous speeds of more than 400 miles per hour, fast enough to keep pace with a jet airliner.
