    PRESIDENT HARRY S TRUMAN
Harry Truman became president of the United States on April 12, 1945 upon the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt. During Truman's presidency Germany surrendered (May 8, 1945) and Japan surrendered (Aug. 14, 1945), ending World War II. The U.S., with Truman's approval, dropped an atomic bomb on the people of Hiroshima on Aug. 6 and one on Nagasaki on Aug. 9, 1945. As more information has become available regarding the Japanese peace effort, the Japanese fear of losing their emperor (whom they believed was a god), and U.S. advisors who offered other methods of winning the war, the debate has grown over whether the atomic bombings were necessary to save lives and win the war (for example, see Hiroshima: Was it Necessary? Truman always staunchly defended the atomic bombings. Shortening the war, saving American lives, and revenge are the main reasons he gave for using them. In his first public explanation (Aug. 6, 1945, just after Hiroshima was a-bombed), he said: "The Japanese began the war from the air at Pearl Harbor. They have been repaid many fold."

To no one’s surprise, the two Missouri Democrats who brought about Pendergast’s downfall challenged Truman for his Senate seat in the primary. One was Governor Lloyd Stark, whom Roosevelt supported, and the other was Maurice Milligan, whose nomination for a second term as U.S. district attorney Truman had opposed in the Senate. Truman began his primary fight with no political backing, no money, and two popular reformers as opponents. He traveled the state, making speeches about his record in short, simple language. He won the primary, and despite his Pendergast association, mentioned frequently by his Republican opponent, he won in November. His reelection was so unexpected that when he returned to the Senate, his colleagues gave him a standing ovation.

On August 6, 1945, President Harry Truman released the awesome power of the atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. This action helped to end the Second World War, but at a terrible price.

149442 UN/DPI/M. Matsushige HARRY S. TRUMAN'S ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE DROPPING OF AN ATOMIC BOMB ON HIROSHIMA Address to the Nation, August 6, 194 "Sixteen hours ago an American airplane dropped one bomb on Hiroshima, an important Japanese Army base. That bomb had more power than 20,000 tons of TNT. It had more than 2,000 times the blast power of the British "Grand Slam," which is the largest bomb ever yet used in the history of warfare. The Japanese began the war from the air at Pearl Harbor. They have been repaid manyfold. And the end is not yet. With this bomb we have now added a new and revolutionary increase in destruction to supplement the growing power of our armed forces. In their present form these bombs are now in production, and even more powerful forms are in development.

    Early life and career.
Truman was the son of a mule trader and farmer. He attended school in Independence, Mo., completing high school in 1901. He became a bank clerk in Kansas City; then in 1906 he took over management of his maternal grandmother's farm at Grandview. He also served as local postmaster, road overseer, and national guardsman. He became a partner in a lead mine (1915) and in an oil-prospecting business (1916); both failed. Truman distinguished himself in heavy action as a captain in World War I, showing bravery and other qualities of leadership. On June 28, 1919, he married Elizabeth ("Bess") Wallace, an Independence girl whom he had known since childhood. He became a partner in a Kansas City haberdashery store, and, when the business failed, he entered politics with the help of Thomas Pendergast, a Democratic boss of Jackson county.

Presidency: 1945-1953 Franklin Roosevelt was elected to the White House for a fourth term in 1944, but he was far more ill than most people suspected. His new Vice-President was Harry Truman, a career Congressman from Independence Missouri. Roosevelt died only three months after beginning his fourth term and Truman was horrified suddenly to find himself President of the United States. When he was told what had happened he whispered, "I'm not big enough for the job. I'm not big enough." If he was not big enough at that moment then there is no question that by the time he left office in 1953 Harry Truman had grown enormously. It isn't difficult to find similarities between Truman and his Artisan predecessor Roosevelt. They were both vigorous and active men. They both exhibited extraordinary determination. Both were politicians who loved their involvement with the people and the affairs of state. They were both gifted with the ability to grasp the essence of immediate situations but were less gifted in their ability to make sense of abstract issues. And both had great and usually unyielding faith (sometimes misplaced) in their own opinions. The differences between the two were also great and these differences help us grasp the fundamental distinction between the

    TRUMAN, HARRY S.
, thirty-third president of the United States, remembered for his genial common touch and outspoken bluntness. Truman rose in politics as the result of an alliance with the notorious Pendergast machine of Kansas City. A failure in various business ventures, he was notably successful in other endeavors—as a combat artillery captain in World War I, a rising figure in the Reserve Officers Corps (1920-1939), an effective county administrator (1923-1924, 1927-1934), and a popular and industrious U.S. senator (1935-1945). Beneath a usually friendly manner, he harbored a thick layer of aggressiveness that occasionally discharged itself in angry outbursts. Achieving the vice presidency in 1944 because of his acceptability to all wings of the Democratic party, he became president upon the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt, April 12, 1945. As a party leader, he hoped to maintain a grand coalition that would have room for all the diverse elements of Roosevelt's political coalition. Personally, however, he considered himself a bit to the left of center and possessed roots in the tradition of western and midwestern insurgency. As president, therefore, he pursued an aggressively liberal program (the Fair Deal) that roused the Democratic presidential party and helped him win election in 1948. Its major elements, however, were defeated by a conservative Congress and an indifferent postwar public concerned primarily with preserving the New Deal rather than with achieving new liberal breakthroughs.

Harry S Truman National Historic Site includes the Truman Home in Independence, Missouri, and the Truman Farm Home in Grandview, Missouri. Both units are within the Kansas City metropolitan area (population 1.5 million). Truman Home: Harry S Truman (1884-1972), 33rd President of the United States, lived here from 1919 until his death. The white Victorian style house at 219 North Delaware Street was built by the maternal grandfather of Bess Wallace Truman (1885-1982), and was known as the "Summer White House" during the Truman administration (1945-1953). The site also includes the two adjacent homes of Mrs. Truman's brothers, and, across Delaware Street, the home of the President's favorite aunt and cousins. Truman Farm Home: Built in 1894 by Harry Truman's maternal grandmother, the Farm Home is the centerpiece of a 5.25 acre remnant of the family's former 600-acre farm. Mr. Truman worked the farm as a young man, from 1906-1917. It was here, said his mother, that Harry got his "common sense." Several outbuildings are also on the site. Search

Truman Library W hen Harry S. Truman decided not to run again for president in 1952, he said he'd had all he wanted of Washington and returned to his hometown of Independence, Missouri. Washington had probably had enough of Truman, too. His approval rating at the time was the lowest of any president in the 20th century even lower than Nixon's. To the people of Independence, however, approval ratings meant nothing and they gathered by the thousands to welcome Truman home. And, although more than four decades have passed since his presidency, Kansas City is still wild about Harry, as evident in the impressive structures, historical sites, and artistic undertakings that bear his name. The Harry S. Truman Library completed the first phase of a $10-million museum renovation in December 1995. The Truman Farm Home in Grandview, Missouri, once farmed by Truman himself, recently joined the Truman Home in Independence as part of the Harry S. Truman National Historic Site and opened to visitors in the spring of 1996. Independence residents celebrate "Truman Week" each year and present awards in his name. In addition, "Truman," an HBO film which debuted in late 1995, chronicled the man, his achievements and his involvement with important leaders, including corrupt Kansas City political boss Tom Pendergast. The movie was shot in the Kansas City area and gave several area actors the chance to rub shoulders with Gary "Truman" Sinise.

During World War II, African Americans complained that discrimination at home could not be squared with the fight against intolerance overseas. President Roosevelt responded to this complaint by issuing an executive order in June 1941 directing that blacks be accepted into job-training programs in defense plants, forbidding discrimination by defense contractors and establishing a Fair Employment Practices Commission (FEPC). But with southerners firmly in control of major congressional committees, the president could go no further; moreover, with a war on, civil rights was a low priority. Harry Truman, Roosevelt's successor, found himself beset by a multitude of problems after the war, and put up no protest when Congress killed the wartime agency. Later on, however, he asked Congress to create a permanent FEPC, and in December 1946, he appointed a distinguished panel to serve as the President's Commission on Civil Rights, which would recommend "more adequate means and procedures for the protection of the civil rights of the people of the United States." The Commission issued its report, "To Secure These Rights," in October 1947, and it defined the nation's civil rights agenda for the next generation. The Commission noted the many restrictions on blacks, and urged that each person, regardless of race, color or national origin, should have access to equal opportunity in securing education, decent housing and jobs.
