HARRY TRUMAN'S DIARY AND PAPERS
The following are excerpts from President Truman's diary and papers that have relevance to the atomic bombing of Japan. Mr. Truman contributed the full versions of these items to the public domain. They can be found in the Harry S. Truman Library in Independence, MO. Except where otherwise noted, the excerpts on this site can also be found in: Robert Ferrell, ed., Off the Record: The Private Papers of Harry S. Truman Robert Ferrell, ed., Dear Bess: The Letters from Harry to Bess Truman, 1910-1959 [I have included some explanatory and contextual comments for the excerpts. My writing is in brackets and italics, as I have done with this paragraph.] - Doug Long [4/12/45: President Franklin Roosevelt dies. Vice-President Harry Truman becomes President.]
4/12/45 Diary Entry: "I did not know what effect the situation [the change in Presidents] would have on the war effort, price control, war production and everything that entered into the emergency that then existed. I knew the President had a great many meetings with Churchill and Stalin. I was not familiar with any of these things and it was really something to think about but I decided the best thing to do was to go home and get as much rest as possible and face the music."
[Later, Truman described his lack of preparation for managing the war to his daughter:]

Harry S. Truman
In the beginning Harry S. Truman, America's 33rd president, was born on May 8, 1884, in Lamar, Missouri. Serving as vice president for only 82 days, he succeeded Franklin D. Roosevelt , upon his death on April 12, 1945. FDR's condition was a closely held secret, and he had not prepared Truman for ascension to the presidency. America was still embroiled in World War II . President Truman was thrust onto the world political stage at a critical time in modern history. Courage, determination and imagination were required and well met during the Missouri Democrat's presidency. Shortly after the Allies achieved victory in Europe, Truman was faced with one of the most awesome decisions faced by anyone in world history; he decided to drop the first atomic bombs on Imperial Japan. The two bombs ultimately killed more than 200,000 people and ended World War II. Truman struggled through the Korean War , apparently unable to bring it to a close, and faced a frustrated and angry Congress that was beginning to threaten impeachment proceedings against him. He declined to run for president again in and returned home. Truman died in Kansas City, Missouri, on Dec 26, 1972.

Harry S. Truman
US President - 1945-53 Courtesy of the National Guard During his few weeks as Vice President, Harry S. Truman scarcely saw President Roosevelt, and received no briefing on the development of the atomic bomb or the unfolding difficulties with Soviet Russia. Suddenly these and a host of other wartime problems became Truman's to solve when, on April 12, 1945, he became President. He told reporters, "I felt like the moon, the stars, and all the planets had fallen on me." Truman was born in Lamar, Missouri, in 1884. He grew up in Independence, and for 12 years prospered as a Missouri farmer. He went to France during World War I as a captain in the Field Artillery. Returning, he married Elizabeth Virginia Wallace, and opened a haberdashery in Kansas City.

Truman was born in Lamar, Missouri on May 8, 1884. He was the first President born in Missouri Harry Truman was the great-great-great nephew of John Tyler He was a Baptist. He served in the military during WWI. A good piano player, Truman considered a career in music but went into politics instead. He became president when Franklin Roosevelt died. Harry Truman didn't have a Vice President. He had been Franklin Roosevelt's last VP, and the position was not filled until Truman was elected for his own term in 1948. He was one of 15 Presidents who didn't win the popular vote in his election. The train Truman used to campaign in 1948 was called the Ferdinand Magellan.
Truman was the first President to have his inauguration televised. One day Harry Truman walked into the Green Room and looked down at the rug. Something bothered him about that rugfinally he realized that the head of the eagle on the presidential seal in the center of the rug was turned the wrong way. Instead of facing the olive branch, this eagle's head pointed toward the arrows. Promptly Truman ordered that the rug be re-stitched with the eagle's head turned the right way. The smartest boy in Truman's graduating class of 1901, Charles G. Ross, became Truman's press secretary.

"The Buck Stops Here," "Plain speaker," "Give 'em hell" all conjure up images of Harry S. Truman, the U.S. president remembered for his doctrine of communist containment as well as his decision to end World War II by unleashing the atom bomb on Japan. Born on a farm near Lamar, Missouri, on May 8, 1884, Truman graduated from high school in 1901 and held a variety of jobs before fighting in France as a lieutenant in the National Guard. After the war, he and a friend opened a haberdashery store, but the economy was bad and the business failed. At age 38, with the help of Kansas City political boss Thomas J. Pendergast, Truman won a country judgeship. Truman attended law school at nights, lost re-election in 1924 and was elected to another term in 1926. In 1934, with Pendergast's help, he was elected to the Senate and was branded a "Pendergast" senator upon his arrival in Washington. He was a reliable "New Dealer." His hard work, diligence and fairness to all earned the respect of his colleagues. In his second term, which he won without the help of Pendergast, he enhanced his reputation by chairing the Special Committee Investigating National Defense, exposing graft, waste and corruption and saving the United States much money. Domestically Truman worked for civil rights legislation and reformed the foreign affairs apparatus. The Foreign Service Act of 1946 professionalized the Foreign Service. The National Security Act of 1947 created the CIA, the National Security Council and the present-day Defense Department, with civilian control over the military.

American President Harry S. Truman, 1884-1972
America's 33rd President, Harry S. Truman, inherited the Oval Office after the sudden death of Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1945, as well as World War II and a White House in such disrepair Truman's piano fell through the floor. Serving the remainder of Roosevelt's term and reelected for a second, Harry S. Truman, the first world leader to employ atomic weapons died December 26th, 1972 at the age of 88. Born May 8th, 1884 in Lamar Missouri, Harry S. Truman was the first of 3 children of John and Martha Ellen Truman, who gave their son no middle name but the initial "S" to appease relatives battling for naming honors. The Truman family moved to Independence Missouri in 1890 where Harry, a late enrollment in school because of frail health and poor eyesight became smitten with a young classmate, Elizabeth "Bess" Wallace. While Harry had piano lessons two to three times a week and read voraciously, Bess was a standout student athlete and star of skating and tennis teams. The odd couple were inseparable, and in 1918 became engaged as Harry Truman, a volunteer for the Army in World War I prepared to sail for France as the Captain of Battery D from Missouri. Truman was an unlikely commander of the collection of roughnecks and rowdies who had become known as the "Dizzy D" but under his leadership shaped into a crack unit. The Battery D unit were recognized for distinguished service at the battles of St. Mihiel and Argonne, and their commanding officer, Harry S. Truman returned home to Missouri a Major in 1919. Truman's first act stateside was to marry his childhood sweetheart, Bess Wallace in June of that year.

Los Angeles (special) To mark its celebration of the 50th anniversary of Israel, the Skirball Museum borrowed some very special objects from the Truman Library in Independence, Missouri a Torah, a Torah case, a manuscript, two busts, a pair of glasses, a cane, and a replica of a desk plaque. Why does a Jewish museum in Los Angeles have to ask an institution in America's heartland to lend a Torah, or a Torah case? These particular ones had been given to Harry S Truman by Israeli President Chaim Weizmann in recognition of the U.S. President's decision in 1948 to recognize the new State of Israel The small Torah was presented at the White House to Truman only 11 days after Israel became independent. According to Larry Hackman, director of the Truman Library who was on hand for the opening of the Skirball exhibit last week, "Truman hadn't been briefed by his staff and didn't know what a Torah was. He sort of looked at it, then looked at Weizmann and said, 'Thanks, I've always wanted one of these.'" By 1956, three years after leaving the Presidency, Truman was very much aware of what a Torah was and its symbolic importance, Hackman added in an interview. He quoted Abba Eban, who in
