An island of Trinidad and Tobago in the Atlantic Ocean off northeast Venezuela. The island was inhabited by Arawaks when discovered by Columbus in 1498. A Spanish possession for the next three centuries, it was largely neglected by Spain and was a frequent target for Dutch, French, and British buccaneers. Seized by Great Britain in 1797, Trinidad was later joined with Tobago to form the colony of Trinidad and Tobago (1898). Unlike its Caribbean neighbours, Trinidad experienced full-scale slavery for a relatively short fifty years, while the Dutch, French and British were too busy fighting over Tobago to dedicate it to the demands of King Sugar. Consequently, the national psyche is characterized by a strong sense of identity and a laid-back enjoyment of the good things in life, best displayed in the local propensity for "liming" – meeting friends for a drink and a chat. With more than a dozen public holidays, local festivals and the pre-Lenten Carnival, a no-holds-barred two days of dancing in the street, the islands' reputation of knowing how to party is well deserved.

Trinidad and Tobago Program
Introduction
St. Lawrence University in conjunction with Pacific Lutheran University offers students a program that introduces them to the culture, history and complexity of Trinidad and Tobago. This spring semester program provides about five SLU students an opportunity to join PLU students in studying the rich and varied culture of the two-island nation. The program includes a one-month course taught by the site director, a field study course in Caribbean culture and society that runs the entire semester, and direct enrollment in two courses of their choice at the St. Augustine Campus of the University of the West Indies in Port of Spain, Trinidad. Trinidad and Tobago are the southernmost islands of the Caribbean archipelago and, because they are geologically an extension of the South American continent, they have rainforests rich in tropical species. The country offers a unique experience because of its blend of African, Indian, European, Chinese, and Lebanese cultures. The program is especially beneficial in exposing students to complex and open discourses on race and ethnicity. Home Off-Campus Programs On Campus Academics International Students ...
