History

Christopher Columbus landed on Trinidad on July 31, 1498, during his third voyage. At that time, the island was populated by a relatively peaceful Arawak subgroup called Igneri, who engaged in primitive agriculture, and the fierce Caribs. Culture: The people of Trinidad and Tobago enjoy a rich cultural tradition. The distinctive West Indian musical form of the calypso originated in Trinidad during the 1800's. The calypso music, which is now part of the West Indian people's way of life, is a cultural and artistic expression of the political, economic, and social situation. It has been described as a development of African folk music, with French creole and Spanish influences.

Home Welcome
The first inhabitants of these islands were Amerindians from South America who traveled there hundreds of years before Christopher Columbus landed in the Caribbean. With the arrival of settlers from Europe, foreign diseases greatly reduced the native population, and today few full-blooded descendants remain. The European influence on the culture of Trinidad and Tobago primarily comes from Spain, France, and Britain. All three countries claimed the islands at various times during the country’s colonial history. Spanish rule began when Columbus "discovered" Trinidad and lasted for nearly 300 years. During the latter part of Spain’s occupation, French immigrants moved into political offices; in addition to African and Spanish influences, Trinidadian culture began to adopt French traits, language, and customs. Dates to remember........ 1498 - Christopher Columbus claims Trinidad for Spain
1592 - Spanish settle in Trinidad and retain possession for two centuries
1797 - Trinidad is captured by British
1814 - Tobago is ceded to the British
1834 - Slavery is abolished in Trinidad
1845 - Indian indentured immigration begins; program lasts until 1917

RACE AND COLOR
IN TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO

BLPR 101 - Dr. Seenarine, Spring 2000 Introduction Throughout the world ethnicity has been (and still is) a critical factor in elements of social importance and everyday communal activities. This is especially true of such post-colonial and underdeveloped societies like those found in the Caribbean. Similar to other places, race permeates every aspect of social life in Trinidad. Race can determine one’s access to wealth, status, political power and prestige. Throughout Trinidad’s history there has been schisms within ethnic, social class, culture, religious and sexual parameters, leading to a lack of social cohesion. The absence of social solidarity has had comprehensive implications of the national identity of Trinidadians. By analyzing the historical relationship between the colonizer and those who were colonized we can trace the roots of the ‘colonial mentality" which plagues many West Indian societies. Many world powers have never addressed the perceptions of people after the direct colonial experience and its legacy; the colonization

Footprints Resort Mia Persad-Douglas grew up at an oil refinery, in a gated community, called Oilfields Camps on the Caribbean island of Trinidad ( Learn More ). They lived very well in one of the many three-bedroom bungalows with access to a swimming pool and tennis courts. But Mia's father Krishna, a production geologist, dreamed of doing something more meaningful with his life. When Mia was in college, a family holiday to the neighboring island of Tobago in 1992 changed everyone's life forever. While visiting Man-O-War Bay in Charlotteville, Krishna bought a piece of land. By chance he found Culloden Estate, a 200 acre abandoned sugar plantation and persuaded the owner to sell him a 60 acres of the lush tropical property. Krishna wanted to do something special and different with the family's new home. In 1997, he opened an environmentally-friendly resort and called it Footprints. It is built with recycled and recyclable materials according to the principle of sustainable design, which seeks to maintain biological diversity and environmental integrity of the land. The pool is salt water. Solar power is used whenever possible.

The Culture of Trinidad and Tobago The culture of Trinidad and Tobago is a reflection of a creative and vibrant, ethnically mixed and cosmopolitan society. The rhythmic sounds of the steelband music, the pulsating beat of the tassa drums, the entertaining calypsos and chutney songs, the romantic swaying of paranderos at parang time, all tell the tale of a people emerging from four centuries of colonialism, independence and republic rule. The contribution of the East Indians to national cultural survival The Trinidad Carnival has been described in many circles as the "world's greatest festival." It continues to attract thousands of visitors yearly. Started from mere mockery of pre-colonial landlords by their `inferiors', the festival has grown into a rich reserve of craftsmanship, song and music that must today be the envy of many nations. http://www.pantrinbago.co.tt/home/index.asp
