From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
The Culture of Trinidad and Tobago reflects the influence of African Indian French Amerindian ... Caribbean , and American culture on Trinidad and Tobago . Since the histories of Trinidad and Tobago are different, there are differences in the cultural influences which have shaped each island. Despite their small sizes, there are also regional differences within each island. Trinidad and Tobago is an English -speaking country with strong links to both the United Kingdom and the United States . Historical membership in the British Empire left a major influence on the country, including the dominance of the English language and the popularity of the two top sports in the country, football and cricket . The dominance of American television programming and Hollywood movies, together with the presence of a large emigrant population in the United States has resulted in a profound American influence on the culture. In fact, in the last few years Trinidad and Tobago has seen their first American Cricket player in the person of Jeff Chemerinsky who lived for a time on the Islands. A treble pan from Tobago

This music is an important part of Carnival, the biggest celebration of the year on the islands. Carnival is a giant celebration that happens before Lent every year. There are many parties and parades where thousands of people dress up in fantastic costumes and dance the calypso. It is very colorful and lots of fun for everyone. Trinidad and Tobago also have their own university and many local artists and writers. There are theaters that put on plays and many musical concerts and celebrations. Tobago: Culture, Calypso and Sexuality Education I have just returned from a one-month visit to the island of Tobago, which is part of the twin-island republic of Trinidad and Tobago. I am Canadian, but my mother is from Trinidad and my parents own and operate a guesthouse in Tobago. The incidence of HIV/AIDS on the small island of Tobago (pop. 51, 000) is the highest in the Caribbean, and especially high among the youth population. Young people in Tobago have many beliefs and misconceptions in how the disease is spread and how it can be controlled. Personally, in my short visit, I attended two funerals that were most likely AIDS related. Most people are reluctant to talk about AIDS, especially the family of the deceased who might then become labeled as carriers themselves. Trinidad and Tobago has a strong and distinct culture that includes music, dancing, drinking and partying in a very sexual manner. Young people become very comfortable with their sexuality because of the culture and have few inhibitions. However, despite their very sex-positive culture, young people in Trinidad and Tobago are not adequately educated about safer sex. This is especially apparent in Tobago where the rate of HIV/AIDS infection is 100 percent higher than the country as a whole.

Government
The president is the constitutional head of state. Executive power is vested in a prime minister and a cabinet drawn from the largest parties in the bicameral parliament. This comprises the Senate, with 31 appointed members, and the House of Representatives, with 36 members elected by universal adult suffrage. Since 1980, Tobago has had its own 15-seat House of Assembly, with 12 members elected and three selected by the ruling party. Tobago was granted full internal self-government by the national government in January 1987.
Economy
The non-oil industrial sector is concentrated in relatively new industries established with oil and gas revenues, such as plastics and electronics. The agricultural sector is small, with sugar cane, coffee, cocoa and citrus fruits as the main commodities. Once a net exporter of foodstuffs, Trinidad now imports the bulk of its requirements.

The culture of Trinidad and Tobago
Trinidad's Carnival is the most outrageous in the Caribbean. Integral to the festivities is the music of the steel drum (pan), which was invented in Trinidad half a century ago using the hammered-out ends of discarded oil drums. Panyards, where steel drum bands practice in the evenings, abound in Port of Spain and are particularly active with the decibels in the weeks preceding Carnival. Calypso, a medium for political and social satire, has roots on Trinidad. It stems back to the days when slaves sang in patois, mocking their colonial masters. The Mighty Sparrow, long-time king of calypso, is a Trinidadian native, as are many of the Caribbean's up-and-coming calypso stars. Today, the music of indentured servants from India has also become an integral part of Trinidad's musical repertoire. A number of internationally known writers hail from Trinidad, including VS and Shiva Naipaul, Samuel Selvon and CLR James. St Lucian native Derek Walcott, the 1992 Nobel Prize winner for literature, lived in Trinidad for much of his adult life and is an active advocate for local theater projects.

They tell us whether he is a child or an old man, whether it is morning or evening, light or darkness, heat or frost, and disclose whether a person is alone or in company. Nowhere is the freeness of this spirit and the power of our multiethnic society better demonstrated than in the Carnival, our most famous cultural phenomenon. It is a rainbow to behold, full of traditions and innovations, colour and noise, always over-the-top, always just a little controversial. The full-scale abandon on the streets, the creative essence of the street masquerade with its thousands of costumes, hundreds of calypsos and awe-inspiring steelband performances is as honest a reflection of local character as possible.
