... Trilobites are an extinct group of arthropods (jointed-legged animals) known from more than 10,000 fossil species. The group Trilobita existed from early in the Cambrian Period (520 million years ago) until the end of the Permian Period (250 million years ago). The name Trilobita is derived from the three (tri-) lobed structure of the exoskeleton, which has a raised central lobe (or axis) and a pair of side lobes, called pleurae. The trilobite body is also divided lengthwise into three regions or tagmata: a head or cephalon, a middle region (thorax) composed of several to many articulated segments, and a tail plate called a pygidium, which consists of fused segments.
Trilobites as arthropods
Despite a quarter billion years since their extinction, the zoological affinities of trilobites can be determined from structures preserved in fossils. Before the first trilobite with its legs fossilised was described in 1870, it was already well established that Trilobita belonged to the Arthropoda. Arthropods are the most species-rich animal phylum living today, and have been the most diverse group of multicellular animals since the Early Cambrian. Their main subgroups are the crustaceans (like prawns and crabs), the chelicerates (including spiders, scorpions, and mites), and the wholly terrestrial groups Insecta and Myriapoda (the latter including millipedes and centipedes).

The Section of Invertebrate Paleontology houses three-quarters of a million specimens of invertebrate fossils including more than 12,000 type specimens . The collections are constituted mainly of Paleozoic specimens from the United States with emphasis on the Carboniferous System. It also includes the largest collection of the Jurassic Solnhofen Limestone in the North America, a significant assemblage of invertebrates from the Bear Gulch Limestone (lagerstatten) of Montana, and an extensive collection of Devonian siliceous sponges of the Appalachian Basin. Since the Section's inception its staff have been dedicated to the premise that the collections should be used in the same way as books in a library are. The utilization of the Section's collections in education, exhibits, and research is a primary goal of the staff. Furthermore, Section personnel are dedicated to promoting educational programs on invertebrate paleontology and geology. Currently the Section has prepared and is preparing a number of online educational tours on geology and paleontology, and has promoted these disciplines via membership in the friends group

Trilobite Cookies
By Prof. George W. Hart
(neither a professor of gastronomy nor paleontology, but I like cookies) Trilobites are extinct marine animals which lived gazillions of years ago. Real trilobites may or may not have tasted like chicken. (who knows?) These cookies are the result of my most recent research into what ancient trilobites would have tasted like if primitive biochemical processes were based on jam/chocolate/cookie molecules. Independent paleoconfectionary laboratories often ask for my formula, so I have placed it here for the world to enjoy. So bake a batch of 'bites...
A.) Gather the ingredients
  • 2 sticks unsalted butter (1 cup, 240 cc) 2/3 cup sugar (160 cc) 1 egg 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (5 cc) 3/4 teaspoon almond extract (4 cc) 2 and 1/2 cups flour (0.6 liter) 1/2 teaspoon baking powder (2.5 cc) 1/4 teaspoon salt (1 cc) Apricot preserves and/or seedless raspberry preserves 8 ounces semisweet chocolate bits (225 gram) Decorative candy dots for eyes
B.) Find the equipment
  • Mixer Cookie gun, a.k.a. cookie press, with serrated-bar-shaped extruder
