Trilobite Classification - the nine Orders

Numerous galleries of trilobite images
The Paleozoic is often called the age of the trilobite. Trilobites radiated repeatedly, expanding in diversity and distribution beginning with and after the Cambrian Explosion , but also suffered periodic declines in major extinction events. Nine Orders of Arthropod Class Trilobita Trilobites occupy a special place in the hearts of collectors and professionals alike. To these cohorts: "trilobites are very pretty". Riccardo Levi- Setti in his book " Trilobites " describes them as the butterflies of seas. Richard Fortey's more recent book " Trilobite! Eyewitness to Evolution " wonderfully projects this professional paleontologist's love of trilobites. There are also many wonderful websites that reflect a labor of love of the webmaster; particularly among these is Sam Gon's site, "A Guide to the Orders of Trilobites" that is, at once, artistic and a distilation a huge amount of science into concise, non-recondite language and illustrations. I'm sure Sam's site has and will continue to increase the number of people who consider that trilobites are very pretty. The popularity of trilobites is due in large part to the magnificent preservation of their calcified exoskelton that is seen in a myriad of forms, many very exotic; the many trilobite forms evolved due to natural selection for features of

By the time trilobites appear in the fossil record they are already highly diverse and possess two characteristics that likely served them well to survive in the Paleozoic seas, a well- mineralized exoskeleton, and a highly advanced visual system. Both of these attributes resulted from the ageless evolutionary war between predator and prey . Despite setbacks during numerous Paleozoic extinction events, the trilobite lineage persisted for some 300 million years before finally becoming extinct at the end of the Permian Period. Unraveling the complex ancestry of the trilobite from among the diverse arthropod cousins of the Cambrian Explosion The currently most accepted theory is that the Class Trilobita is a Class within the Superclass Arachnomorpha, one of two Superclasses within the Subphylum Schizoramia of the Phylum Arthropoda, and as such are more closely related to Chelicerata, than to Myriapoda, Crustacea or Hexapoda, including insects (see chart above). Subphylum Schizomoria also contains Crustaceomorpha among whose members are primitive arthropods common to the Burgess shale and

    Definition: Lagerstätten
    At a Glance
Lagerstätten (sing. lagerstätte) are fossil localities which are highly remarkable for for either their diversity or quality of preservation; sometimes both. Sometimes the phrase konservat-lagerstätten is seen in all its polysyllabic glory, though this seems like somewhat pretentious over-kill to me.
    Introduction
Other very well-known lagerstätten include the Green River Formation of Wyoming, USA, which has produced countless fossil fish for the commercial fossil market, the Solnhofen Limestone of Germany, famous primarily for the Archeopteryx fossils found there. However, there are many more and I shall attempt to describe, or at least list, some of them on this site.
    Listing by Age
The following table lists a few basic facts about some well-known lagerstätten. It is arranged in usual geological fashion: age increases down the table.
