Triathlon
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
A triathlon is an athletic event made up of three contests (from the Greek ). In contemporary usage, the name triathlon is mostly applied to a combination of swimming cycling and running , in that order. In most modern triathlons, these events are placed back-to-back in immediate sequence and a competitor's official time includes the time required to "transition" between the individual legs of the race, including any time necessary for changing clothes and shoes. As a result, proficiency in swimming running , and cycling alone is not sufficient to guarantee a triathlete a competitive time: trained triathletes have learned to race each stage in a way that preserves their energy and endurance for subsequent stages.

(originally from the Space Coast Runner's Newsletter) By Bernie Sher Several people in Space Coast Runners (SCR) have asked about triathlon and what it takes to train and compete/complete one. Since this is the off season for triathlon I thought this would be a excellent opportunity to provide some general information about the sport, why you should consider triathlon as an alternative to running, and provide some training guidelines to get you started in the sport.

London 2012 will work alongside The Michelob ULTRA London Triathlon to showcase London's ability to stage a world-class sporting event where organisers will close the streets to bring in some of the cities most famous landmarks including Tower Bridge, The London Eye and Big Ben on July 31 - August 1. With entrants in the swim, bike, run event up 50% on 2003, charities are currently dealing with a raft of applications from hundreds of triathletes who missed the ballot, while many people are still making the transition to triathlon by entering as a relay team of three before the July 2 deadline. 2004 also sees some impressive developments including all Sunday competitors taking in London's finest sites on the new bike route into Central London while the event continues to draw high profile charity fundraisers such as Alastair Campbell who's leading a team for Leukaemia Research Fund that includes newsreader Jon Snow.

As first reserve in the British Olympic Squad Andrea's victory is particularly poignant with current GB Olympic Squad member Jodie Swallow still having to prove her fitness, which was not evident at yesterday's ITU World Cup race in Hungary. Consequently the British Olympic Selection committee will have watched the race with interest. The men's race saw only one Brit on the podium, Stuart Hayes, who was placed third against the strongest global field in the history of the event. First place was claimed by Bevan Docherty, New Zealand Olympic Team member and World Champion, in 1 hr 46 minutes and 18 seconds, with French Olympic hopeful, Fred Belaubre finishing second. The elite athletes joined thousands of fun runners, 45% of which are first timers to the sport, across the weekend in The Michelob ULTRA London Triathlon, which took place in the glorious sunshine with 30,000 spectators cheering them on.

(Jan. 8, 2002) - USA Triathlon and National Teams Program Director Libby Burrell have announced the 15 "resident members" of the 2003 National Select Team Program, as well as the new coach who will lead the program. Olympic triathlete Hunter Kemper will return to the Olympic Training Center this year. Resident members of the National Select Team will train at the U.S. Olympic Training Center (USOTC) in Colorado Springs and live either there or in housing nearby from January until December. The National Select Team Program will also serve other USA Triathlon National Team athletes who may visit the USOTC for short-term visits, Burrell said. " We want members of the USA Triathlon National Team to know they are also welcome to work with us at the USOTC," Burrell said. John Crawley has been selected to oversee the program. He will be directly responsible for the long-term planning and administration of each athlete's training and competition plan, the daily supervision of all triathlon training sessions, the coaching responsibilities at selected national and international competitions, and the active promotion of the opportunities available within the National Select Team Program for the entire USA Triathlon National Team. Crawley comes to USA Triathlon from the U.S. Olympic Committee, where he served as a sport biomechanist with the Coaching and Sports Sciences Division since 1999. In his role with the USOC, he was charged with providing sport biomechanics and other integrated high-performance sport science services to the 45 National Governing Bodies of Olympic sport in the United States. Crawley was also part of the High Performance Team at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Conducted 4.23.01,
by Slowtwitch editor Amy White INTRO : Isabelle Mouthon-Michellys, the French triathlete who starred at both long-course and Olympic-style racing, has "half-retired" from triathlon at age 34. But that doesn't mean she isn't still active in the sport that she and her twin sister, Béatrice, excelled at for so many years. (And Béatrice is still racing as a professional this year.)
Mouthon retired after her seventh-place finish in triathlon's Olympic debut in Sydney last year. Béatrice was there, too, finishing 35th. It was a departure from the sport that the teen-age swimming and running sensation had first been inspired to try by watching the Nice triathlon on television in 1984: "I was 18. I thought these people were crazy, but if they could do it, I must be able to do it, too," she said. So naturally her first goal was to complete Nice, a race she would later go on to win while taking the world long distance championship there last year. That's in addition to her many French national titles, another long-course world championship, a second-place finish at the Hawaii Ironman and many, many top 10-finishes in ITU races as she worked to make the Olympic team for France in the last few years.
Born in the French Alps town of Annecy into a large family (five brothers and sisters), Isabelle and Béatrice started racing at the same time. "We cannot tell you who started first," Isabelle said. "We both wanted to face new challenges; we were both fed up with lap swimming and track running, so triathlon was just perfect for us."

By ARA
on Sep 04 2004 10:26:11 (ARA) - Triathlon became an official Olympic sport in 2000 at the Sydney Games, but it has been steadily growing in popularity for three decades. For competitors, triathlon offers the ultimate challenge: swimming, biking and running, competing against other athletes and the clock, and challenging their own personal limits. The sport consists of three legs: swimming, biking and running, in that order, according to the rules set by the International Triathlon Union. Race distances can vary, but most triathlons use the Olympic standards, which are a 1.5 kilometer swim, a 40-kilometer bike ride and a 10-kilometer run. The first triathlons were informal races organized by a group of athletes in Southern California, many of them marathon runners, who were looking for a break from the routine of their grueling training regimens. These competitions evolved into more "official" events, and the first true triathlon was held in 1974. From that beginning, the sport has grown to include thousands of triathlons held every year, in locations around the world. "Triathlon has become a popular sport for a growing number of competitors," says Marilyn Franzen, Life Time Fitness' athletic events director. "They are appealing events because the average person has some experience in either biking, swimming or running."

The triathlon entered the Olympics faster than any other sport. Created in 1974, it became an Olympic sport in 2000. The original triathlon, as represented in the Ironman competitions, is made up of a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile cycling leg, and a full marathon of 26 miles, 385 yards. However, in the Olympics, as in other international triathlons, the distances are much shorter: a 1.5-kilometer swim, 40-kilometer bicycle ride, and 10-kilometer run. Top of page

What is Triathlon?
A triathlon is a continuous multi-sport event comprised of swimming, cycling and running. Although three sports are involved only one time is important – the overall time! That is why the transitions between each discipline are so important and require rehearsing almost as much as the three sports. Distances vary from local sports centre races of upwards of 400m swim; 10 miles bike and 3 miles run, right up to the Ironman distance of 2.4 miles swim; 112 miles bike and a full marathon run! There is no doubt that at the elite end of the sport it is a gruelling test of skill and endurance but as in marathon running and many other sports there are thousands of people who compete not for glory, but for fun and a healthy lifestyle. Championship distances have been set at:-

"It's just so cool for me to see. I'm still in disbelief that I am No.1," says Hunter Kemper , the first U.S. man to hold the top spot since the ITU began its world rankings 14 years ago. Until now, Kemper's main claim to fame has been as the guy who served Krispy Kremes with his cake at his wedding. But since April, with a victory and two second-place finishes at ITU World Cups and wins at the Tempe International Triathlon and the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon, the 29-year-old is what's hot in men's triathlon.
