History
IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch wrote that the father of the modern Olympic Games, Baron Pierre de Coubertin , would have especially enjoyed the triathlon, during which he would have had to swim, cycle and run. These sports have been a part of the Olympic competition schedule since the first Olympic Games in 1896 . Coubertin (1875) himself said the following: " We need a sport that combines swimming, cycling and running, which are all so popular; a modern, dynamic sport to celebrate the Olympic spirit of fair-play, endurance, force, ability and passion
The triathlon made its debut at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney where 500,000 spectators watched the event for two days.

The triathlete's favourite The Royal Windsor Triathlon has grown to be the best race in Great Britain with no less than five BTA "Event of the Year" awards in the last six years, including scooping the double of BTA Event of the Year 2004 as well as the inaugural 220 Triathlon Magazine award for Race of the Year 2004. With over 2,200 entries in 2005, the race was filled three months bfore the event took place so early booking is strongly recommended!!. Remember that both registration and bike racking are only possible on Saturday, and the first waves will begin at 6.00am on the Sunday morning. No other event in the world can compare with the historical backdrop of Windsor Castle, Eton College and the majestic River Thames. The river swim is followed by a bike course that takes in a number of villages around beautiful Berkshire and returns through Windsor Great Park. The multi-lap run course winds around the Great Castle, over Eton Bridge and along Eton High Street, passing famous Eton College. The event takes in 900 years of British history! "The Windsor Triathlon has the full backing of the whole town and with over 400 support crew, marshals and safety personnel in attendance, you will be guaranteed a superb event again this summer", says John Lunt, Event Director. Seen on television for the last four years, the race is expected to be back on TV screens again this year. Several thousand spectators will pack the streets to watch the race on the warm summer morning.

Farewell to Athens
Every Olympic Games provides us with defining moments. Some are obvious - like Cathy Freeman's golden run in Sydney and Muhammad Ali's lighting of the cauldron in Atlanta. Others are a matter of personal preference. Athens was no different. In almost every sport there were memories to cherish. From the feats of Ian Thorpe Michael Phelps and Jodie Henry in the pool to unforgettable victories by Kelly Holmes and Hicham El Guerrouj on the track, every winner had a story to tell. And so did most of the losers. Losers like Jana Pittman , Wilson Kipketer and Alex Popov, who weren't losers at all, but were winners without gold medals. For the Greeks, these Games were a triumph. Not because they were the best ever, but because in the main, they went without a hitch. Because, despite the doubters, they opened on schedule, and because - perhaps against all odds in today's world - for a little more than two weeks they recaptured the spirit of the ancient Olympics. The centrepiece of these Games was the thoroughly modern stadium with its Santiago Calatrava-designed roof.

Silken Laumann won three Olympic medals during her rowing career: one silver and two bronze. She was a world champion and was widely considered the best single rower of her time, but bad luck prevented her from parlaying that into an Olympic gold. The Matchless Six
It took until 1928 for women to compete in track and field events at the Olympics. And at the 1928 Amsterdam Games, the Canadian women's track and field team was the equal of any other, winning two gold, one silver and one bronze.

Israel's Fridman Makes History
By Michelle Kaufman Miami Herald
Thursday, August 26, 2004; Page D08 ATHENS, Aug. 25 Windsurfer Gal Fridman swears he felt all of Israel and the 11 slain Israelis from the 1972 Munich Olympics pumping his board for him on a brilliantly sunny Wednesday afternoon. "As if I was somewhere else, and the board was moving by itself in the final meters." When he crossed the finish line, and realized he had won Israel's first gold medal in any sport, he wrapped himself in the Israeli flag and plunged into the water, his tears mixing with the salt water of Saronic Gulf.
