Sunday, September 17 Much more was expected of Lessing and Co
From David Powell in Sydney Lessing:
On its Olympic debut over the weekend, triathlon proved an irresistible spectacle but, for the Great Britain team, the memories will be of spectacular failure. "A disaster for us would be no medals for the men and no woman in the top ten," Greg Millet, the national performance director, had said beforehand. With Simon Lessing in his squad, Millet felt he could say that with little fear of his statement coming back to haunt him. Haunt him it will, though. Lessing finished ninth today. Yet, so luckless was the team, that he was still the best placed British finisher in either the men’s or women’s race. Four times the Olympic distance world champion, Lessing was let down. Well short of the victory which his record and reputation suggested should have been his, it was, ironically, his reputation that proved his downfall. Describing himself as "a marked man", Lessing said that his chances had been stifled by the tactics of the cycling leg. He had hoped that, after a strong swim, he would find himself clear of the other fast runners after the ride, but the early breakaway group, of which he was a part, was hauled in by the pack. Needing to produce the best run of his career, he was found wanting. "It amounted to a tactical choice," Lessing said. "Unfortunately, I am a marked man and people wait to see what I am going to do. If I don’t do anything, they don’t do anything. If I chase, they chase. Usually, you come off the bike and know whether you have the legs or not. I came off and felt heavy."

Simon Whitfield wins gold in the shadow of Sydney Opera House The triathlon is the youngest sport on show at the Olympics having been established as an event in the 1970s.
It made its Olympic debut four years ago and was hailed an instant hit. The event caught the imagination prior to the start of the Games with talk of sharks in Sydney Harbour and the need for "sharkbuster" divers to protect the competitors. And when the action started it was a case of shocks instead of sharks. The favourites in each event were over-shadowed with Canada's Simon Whitfield and Swiss mother Brigitte McMahon taking gold. Britain's Simon Lessing, the world record holder and five-times world champion, was a hot favourite to win the first Olympic title but trailed in a disappointing ninth. Australia had high hopes of a home win in the women's race, but local darling Michellie Jones was edged out by two seconds in a thrilling sprint finish.

Olympic fans, ask yourself this: why did you enjoy watching Tatiana Grigorieva vault with the pole? No, besides that. Could it be the same reason you enjoyed watching Jai Taurima in the long jump? Michelle Ferris in the cycling? The little-known Justin Norris in the swimming pool? Perhaps it could. The real reason (okay, the other reason) you loved watching Grigorieva in the pole vault is that she jumped a personal best. Put aside her obvious beauty (and the way she silenced 110,000 sports fans by placing a manicured finger to bee-stung lips). Put aside the silver medal (and the email called The Silver Medallist that is doing the rounds). What, really, is the sporting point? It is that Grigorieva did better than she had ever done before. Sure, American Stacy Dragila went higher and broke a world record. Bully for her. Grigorieva was also making history. Her own history. She jumped 4.55 metres and stunned herself.

    http://www2.triathlon.org/itu/itu-general/history.htm
The History of Triathlon Triathlon was invented in the early 1970s by the San Diego Track club, as an alternative workout to the rigors of track training. The club¹s first event consisted of a 10km run, an 8km cycle and a 500metre swim. Over the next decade, triathlon grew by leaps and bounds and soon gained recognition throughout the world. In 1989, the International Triathlon Union (ITU) was founded in Avignon, France and the first official world championships were held. The official distance for triathlon was set at a 1500metre swim, a 40km cycle and a 10km run taking from existing events in each discipline already on the Olympic programme. This standard distance is used for the ITU World Cup series and will also be featured at the Olympic Games. Since 1989, the sport has grown rapidly and now has over a hundred affiliated national federations around the world.

The upcoming season of events will include many of the venues she has frequented in the past: Escape from Alcatraz, ITU World Championships, Chicago Accenture Triathlon, and LifeTime Fitness Triathlon. Lindquist started the 2005 with a win in Australia at Coffs Harbour, followed up by a third place finish in Hobart, Tasmania. She begins her US debut at the ITU World Cup in Honolulu, a race she won last year to qualify her as the first member of the 2004 Olympic Team. There will be frequent updates throughout the season on the Press Release page.
    HISTORY
    TEAM LINDQUIST 2004 UPDATE
Barb started the 2004 season where she left off in 2003- being ranked #1 in the world longer than any other triathlete, male or female. Lindquist will be hard pressed to improve on the stellar year she had in 2003. However she is one step closer to the pinnacle of sport by qualifying for the USA Triathlon Olympic Team in Honolulu, Hawaii, April 18th. Barb comments, “The Olympics are a dream that I have had for quite sometime. I’ve had a great career but I still have a couple of things I’d like to achieve before I retire. A gold medal would be on that list.” With Athens on the horizon the World #1 is one of the favorites for US medal.
Her dedication to excellence and her trademark work ethic have her focused on the task ahead. Her coach and husband Loren gives some insight to the rise to the top. “Her rise has been steady and thought out each step of the way. Experience is something that you can’t buy and learning from each race has been the guide to improvement. Designing a plan that has kept her injury free and healthy has been a key element.” He continues, “The first task for 2004 was to qualify for the US Olympic team. Having that behind her we can now take the training to another level leading up to the Games. The regiment we have put together doesn’t have any short cuts. Barb is a hard worker and pays attention to detail. That’s how she got to the top and stayed there longer than anyone in the history of the sport.”
