uman prowess is not supposed to have a reverse gear. Computer chips shrink and become more powerful. Skyscrapers grow taller, and spaceships travel farther. Medicine keeps people alive longer. But for almost a decade, the Summer Olympics have offered a mysterious exception. In some of the most basic ways imaginable - how fast people can run, how high they can jump, how far they can throw - the march of progress has stopped. The track and field athletes competing in Athens Olympic Stadium over the next week and a half may well struggle to match the performances of their predecessors.

The regular distance for a triathlon is a one-mile swim, 25 miles bike ride and 10 kilometers run. The distance may be reduced by half or doubled, depending on the event and the participants. The standard triathlon distance can be completed within 2 hours or 4 hours, though this hinges on the participant category and sport terrain. History Triathlon History of triathlon can be traced to the San Diego Track Club in the early 1970s. The triathlon was seen as an alternative to rigorous track training. The first triathlon event was held on September 25th 1974. Jack Johnstone and Don Shanahan are pioneers in the history of the triathlon. The San Diego Track Club sponsored the event. The triathlon then comprised 10km running, 8km bicycling and 500 meters of swimming. In 1989, the sport was awarded Olympic status and featured for the first time at the 2000 summer Olympics held in Sydney, Australia. Since then, the game has grown in popularity. In fact, no other sport achieved Olympic status in so short a timeframe. Over the next decade, triathlon grew by leaps and bounds and soon gained recognition throughout the world. International Triathlon Union (ITU) International Triathlon Union is the official international governing body for the Olympic sport of triathlon. International triathlon union was formed in 1989 at Avignon, France. The first world triathlon championships were held during the same year by the International Triathlon Union. The triathlon world championship event comprised 1500 meter swimming, 40km cycling and 10km running. This is a standard distance for the ITU world cup series.

Making Olympic History: 2000 Sydney Games New York Times At the first modern Olympics in 1896, Melpomene became the first female to compete, although unofficially, in the games. Women have made many advancements in the Olympic games over the past 100 years and it appears that the 2000 games in Sydney, Australia will benefit them more than ever before. Two new sports have been added to the games, increasing the total number of sports to twenty-eight. In addition, Sydney will incorporate more than twenty new women's events into its program. This is twenty more than were seen in the Atlanta games in 1996. For the first time in Olympic competition, the Modern Pentathlon, Water Polo, and Weightlifting will include events for women. Athletic, Aquatic, and Shooting sports are also adding more women's events. Two sports being added to the Olympic agenda are the Triathlon and Mia Hamm (white jersey) battles for the ball during the U.S. women's 2-0 victory over Norway. (USA Today)

Aquatics 1896 Aquatics had included a lot of weird events like underwater swimming (1900), 200m obstacle swimming (1900) and a plunge for distance (1904). there were a 100m pool was used, the ocean (1896, the River Seine (1900), and a small lake in St. Louis, USA (1904), had been used in Olympic sites. Decisions or goals were clear: the rules for swimming, diving, and water polo were to be standard; to keep the world records listed.
Archery 1900 Yes, archers today honor the fabled outlaw Robin Hood. The word "Robin Hood" now means splitting the shaft of an arrow alreadin in the target with another arrow. A Standard bow is coated in fibreglass, the arrows are made out of aluminium and carbon graphite and can go more than 240 km/h. Archers today compete in trying to get their arrow closest to the center of the target. Athletics 1896 Athletics have an Olympic motto, "Citius, Altius, Forius", which means faster, higher, stronger. Athletics (or track and field) is about jumping higher, throwing farther, and running faster than the other players. The ancient Olympics started with foot races. Today, athetics stays one of the most popular Olympic sports. From the 100m dash to the 42.195km marathon, from the hammer throw to the high jump. Badminton 1992 Badminton is like tennis because players stand across a net from each other and hit something across the net with rackets. In badminton the net is lowered, and they use a shuttlecock instead of a tennis ball, and it is never to hit the ground, or the other team gets a point.

Women in the Olympics - a brief history
The 20th May 2000 marks the 100th anniversary of the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympic Games. It also marks the centenary of women’s participation in the modern Olympics. Three events were available for women at the 1900 Olympic Games: golf, tennis and yachting. When the modern Olympic Games began in 1896 women had no part in the competition. In fact, the founder of the modern Olympics, Baron Pierre de Coubertin had said on several occasions that the Olympics were no place for women. He felt that rather than seek records for herself, a woman’s greatest achievement was to encourage her sons to excel. Women had to work to gain a presence in the Olympic arena and force open the door to one sport after another. Swimming for women was included in the Games in 1912 and a limited program of track and field was added in 1928. Women’s races longer than 200m were banned until 1960 when the 800m was reintroduced. The women’s marathon was not added until 1984. In 1992 the 10,000m walk was introduced and recently, waterpolo — which had been the domain of men since the Olympics first began — was added to the 2000 Olympic Games program for women. Women have played an enormous role in painting the Olympic picture. Since Charlotte Cooper of Great Britain won gold in singles tennis at the 1900 Paris Olympics, many women have put their stamp on Olympic history.

WOLF TT How it all began Cervélo Cycles saw the light of day in 1995 when 2 engineers, Phil White and Gérard Vroomen, decided to take the work they had been doing on developing faster Time Trial bikes to market. Already involved in bicycle and Human Powered Vehicle design since 1986, the turning point came when a top-ranked Italian pro cyclist approached Gérard to design the fastest possible Time Trial bike for him. He had come to the realization that his bike sponsor was capable of building traditional bikes using off the shelf tubesets from Columbus or Easton, but did not have the interest or expertise to develop leading edge designs with the focus on time trialing and aerodynamics. He also realized that he could not look at the novel designs put before him and know if they were improvements, or just "different".
With help of his team we started the bike design from scratch. We evaluated the bikes on the market, and set a design goal for the bike that was difficult and uncompromising. We wanted something that was unbeatable in aerodynamics yet sacrificed nothing in weight or stiffness, and unfettered by issues of marketability. It was to be a one-off design for this rider. The result was a pretty radical bike that pushed the rules in almost every area. It tested extremely well for aerodynamics, as well as handling, stiffness and comfort.

Until November 11 th Like any other athletics federation in the world, FLA organised and directed activities in track and field, cross-country, road race and walking. But even before FLA existed, Luxembourg athlets participated at international competitions e.g. Olympic Games. In Paris in 1900, Michel Teato was the winner of the olympic marathon. Michel Teato had the Luxembourg citizenship but as he lived in France was participating at the games for his French club, that was usual those days. So nobody in the Grand-Duchy knew that Luxembourg won gold in Paris. The first official Luxembourg athlets at Olympic Games were Paul Fournelle (100 m) and Marcel Pelletier (discus and shot put) in Stockholm (SWE) in 1912.

The triathlon competition route for the Beijing Olympic Games, which has not been ratified by the International Triathlon Union (ITU), needs to be tested in the inaugural Beijing International Triathlon in September, ITU President Les McDonald said Monday in Beijing.
Les McDonald told Xinhua that he inspected the route around theShisanling Reservoir, 50 kilometers northwest to Beijing, which will be tried in the Beijing International Triathlon slated for September 12.
"However," he said, "we have to wait after the Beijing International to listen to participants' opinion before the final decision is made."
Among all the competitions in the Beijing Games, triathlon is the only one whose venue and route have not been decided. Beijing had planned to put it in the Ti'anmen area, which can best represent Beijing and China, but gave up due to technical reasons.

The Olympic Games:
Summer 2004 in Athens, Greece

Athens, Greece, will host the 2004 Summer Olympics. For information on Greece, click here . For a page on Greece's flag, click here The Games of the XXVIII Olympiad are being held in Athens, Greece. The opening ceremonies are on August 13, 2004. The closing ceremonies are on Sunday, August 29, 2004. The Ancient Olympics The ancient Greeks dedicated the Olympic Games to the god Zeus. The original games were held on the plain of Olympia in Peloponnesos, Greece. The Greeks held the first Olympic games in the year 776 BC (over 2700 years ago), and had only one event, a sprint (a short run that was called the "stade"). The race was run by men who competed in the nude. A wreath of olive branches was placed on the winner's head (in Greek, this is called a kotinos). The olive tree was the sacred tree of Athens, Greece. Women were neither allowed to compete in the games nor to watch them, because the games were dedicated to Zeus and were therefore meant for men.

IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch wrote that the father of the modern Olympic Games, Baron Pierre de Coubertin , would have especially enjoyed the triathlon, during which he would have had to swim, cycle and run. These sports have been a part of the Olympic competition schedule since the first Olympic Games in 1896 . Coubertin (1875) himself said the following: " We need a sport that combines swimming, cycling and running, which are all so popular; a modern, dynamic sport to celebrate the Olympic spirit of fair-play, endurance, force, ability and passion
The triathlon made its debut at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney where 500,000 spectators watched the event for two days.
