Triathlon is guaranteed one of the most spectacular backdrops for an Olympic debut in Games history; Sydney Harbour and the Opera House. The women will race on the opening morning of the Games, followed by the men the next morning. Although the sport is technically just 27 years old - competitions dating back to California in 1973 before the Hawaiian Ironman challenge, which is regarded as the sport's true origin in 1978 - its individual components are, of course, ancient: swimming, cycling, running. Collins enjoyed himself so much that he decided it would be a good idea to combine Hawaii's Waikiki Roughwater Swim, Around-Oahu Bike Race and Honolulu Marathon as one event; that meant an exhausting schedule involving a 3.85 kilometres open water swim, a 179 kilometres cycle and a 42 kilometres run. The Ironman challenge was born.

History
The triathlon entered the Olympics faster than any other sport. Created in 1974, it became an Olympic sport in 2000. The original triathlon, as represented in the Ironman competitions, is made up of a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile cycling leg, and a full marathon of 26 miles, 385 yards. However, in the Olympics, as in other international triathlons, the distances are much shorter: a 1.5-kilometer swim, 40-kilometer bicycle ride, and 10-kilometer run. Top of page

History
A swim club in Marseilles, France, held a three-sport event in 1921, consisting of a bicycle leg of about 7 kilometers, a 5-kilometer run, and a 200-meter swim. It was called the Course Des Trois Sports (Race of Three Sports). Evidently there was no follow-up on that, though, and it was more than 50 years before the modern triathlon was created. It grew out of a run-swim biathlon staged in San Diego by David Pain in 1972 to celebrate his 50th birthday. The birthday biathlon was repeated in 1973. One of the competitors, Jack Johnstone, enjoyed it so much that he decided to stage his own biathlon, and he enlisted the help of a friend, Don Shanahan. Shanahan suggested that a bicycle stage be added and Johnstone agreed. The pair got the support of the San Diego Track Club, which announced a "Run, Cycle, Swim Triathlon" to be held on Sept. 25, 1974. The event was so successful that Johnstone and Shanahan decided to hold three more of them in 1975. In the meantime, the Coronado, CA, Optimists Club also sponsored a triathlon. It was the Ironman, though, that really caught the public eye and led to a major explosion of the new sport. John Collins, a U. S. Navy officer who competed in that first triathlon, took the idea to Hawaii, where he combined three major endurance races, the 3.8-kilometer Waikiki Rough Water Swim, the 180-kilometer Around-Oahu Bike Race and the 42.195-kilometer Honolulu Marathon, into a single event known as the Ironman Triathlon.

History
IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch wrote that the father of the modern Olympic Games, Baron Pierre de Coubertin , would have especially enjoyed the triathlon, during which he would have had to swim, cycle and run. These sports have been a part of the Olympic competition schedule since the first Olympic Games in 1896 . Coubertin (1875) himself said the following: " We need a sport that combines swimming, cycling and running, which are all so popular; a modern, dynamic sport to celebrate the Olympic spirit of fair-play, endurance, force, ability and passion
The triathlon made its debut at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney where 500,000 spectators watched the event for two days.

What exactly makes thousands of people take part in the triathlon events, where you have to swim 1500 metres, then immediately cycle 40 kilometres and right afterwards run 10 km – and all of that without a break?
Description
All triathlons consist of Swimming, Cycling, and Running one after the other, but there are three different types:
The Olympic distance triathlon, which is one of the 28 Olympic sports, consists of: 1500m swimming, 40km cycling and 10km running.
The sprint: 750m swimming, 20km cycling and 5km running
Long distance: 4 km swimming, 120 km cycling and 30 km running
The Olympic distance triathlon has prevailed and is included in the Olympic competition schedule. The distances of each discipline at the classic (Olympic) distance correspond to the longest distances adopted by the respective International Federations (FINA, UCI, IAAF), regarding the disciplines carried out in a stadium. Triathlon demands endurance, technique and tactics. ATHENS 2004 Triathlon
See the Olympic sports animations  The sport of Triathlon in the ATHENS 2004 Olympic Games was staged in the wider area of the Municipality of Vouliagmeni in southern Athens. The swimming took place at one of the most famous beaches, Oceanida. The water quality is excellent and the beach has all the necessary facilities. The start took place from a floating pontoon.
