A weekly question/answer column Spring Yard Care Questions From Readers
April 12, 2001
Question: I have been searching for a Globe Maple (globosum) for my landscape. I can't find this tree anywhere and I am quite desperate and would appreciate any help you could give me in locating one.
Answer: There are several different maple species with cultivars called "Globosum." They include Norway Maple, Red Maple, and Sugar Maple. If you are in Utah, the tree you want is: Acer platanoides "Globosum" (Norway Maple variety Globosum). If you can't find it in stock, you should be able to go to any full-service nursery and ask them to order one for you."
- Larry Rupp, Utah State University Extension Horticulture Specialist Question: Last October we purchased three 7-foot pine trees from a nursery. We planted them successfully in our yard. I just noticed this weekend that some of the branches towards the bottom look like they're dying (turning color, appear to be drying out). Is this normal after winter? Or would it be a sign that the trees haven't received enough water during the winter?
Answer: It depends on which needles are dying. If it is the older needles (those closer to the center of the tree) you are probably okay. If the young needles near the tips of the branches are dying, then there is most likely a problem. At this point, I would recommend that you wait until spring and see if there is healthy new growth from the tips. It is not uncommon to have some stress during transplanting, but if you get good new growth you should be okay. Conifers can dry out during the winter, and it is hard to say without knowing your local conditions. In general most pines should be okay unless we get a cold, windy winter with little precipitation.

Backyard tree care
One of the simplest things you can do to help the environment is to plant a tree.
The tree will be in your yard for decades. But there is much more involved than just putting a tree in the ground. It is critical that you choose the right tree and the right location to get the most from your tree. To make your tree live longer, regular maintenance is necessary. These pages will help you select the right tree, plant it correctly, keep it healthy, and utilize it when it eventually dies. Also check the Community Forestry page for more tips.

http://extension.ag.uidaho.edu/mg/southeast/spring_yard_care_2005.htm
Spring Yard Care 2005 by Patty Isaeff, Advanced Master Gardener General Planting Observe Things to consider: Match plants with soil type - amend soil if needed to adjust pH (should be 6.0-7.0) and type (more organics/nutrients?) Organic matter needs to be tilled in completely; prevents soil compaction Match plants with water needs Match plants to sun/shade requirements Match plants to zone type Match plants to common surroundings (plants, structures, walk types…) Amount of maintenance one wants to expend Microclimates Lawns Types – Blue gamma grass, tall fescue*, wheat grasses, perennial rye sheep fescue, buffalo grass (* more drought resistant) Power rake – preferred method is to hand rake the matted areas. If too much area, power rake and raise the height so the vertical blade do not dig into the soil (if set to low the blades can damage the soil and retard new growth.) (Allen Wilson, Early Lawn Care, March 19, 2003) Mow – at lowest or second to lowest setting (at ~ ½ to 3/4“ ht) to remove dead material (thatch) ad allow new green growth to show sooner. Thatch – excellent soil additive for vegetable gardens and flower beds, or to compost pile for later use.

PLANTING MATURE TREES
Cut years off your landscaping schedule with the right equipment and transplanting know-how.
BY MERLE HENKENIUS
Published on: April 1, 1998
var partnerID=77281;
Nothing can grace a yard like well-established trees, but if you're starting with saplings, it can take a generation or more for your trees to reach full bloom. Of course, you'll enjoy the benefits of maturing trees along the way, but it can still be a long wait for real summer shade and the balanced visual heft your landscaping needs. This helps explain the increasing popularity of truck-mounted tree spades. A large tree spade can uproot a fairly mature tree and plunk it down in your yard in a matter of hours, and in the process shave a decade or more from the wait. It's an appealing option. If you've been thinking of having a large tree transplanted, there's really quite a lot to consider. Not every property is right for mature transplants, and not every tree will survive the ordeal. Cost is also an issue. Still, transplanting mature trees makes good sense in many cases, so let's consider the process, from the ground up. The equipment A tree spade is a machine that uses hydraulics to force triangular blades into the ground so a conical plug of earth can be removed. Most larger tree spades are mounted on modified trucks with outrigger stabilizers that support and level the four blades. The two rear blades are mounted on a hinged framework that allows the back of the machine to swing open when approaching a tree.

Tree Tour: What to Plant FAQs - Tree Care

Tree Care FAQs
Q: How can I get my City tree pruned?
A: All City-owned trees are pruned on a rotating schedule or cycle. When and how often the pruning occurs depends on the tree species, its size, and the general condition of the surrounding trees. The city is divided into sectors and we prune on a sector basis throughout the year.
  • Trees over six metres tall are pruned approximately every six to seven years by aerial lift and smaller trees (less than six m) are pruned from the ground every two to four years.
The pruning schedule may be changed because of storm damage, severe cold weather or other reasons.
If a tree is not scheduled for pruning during the regular cycle, it may still be pruned because of storm damage, hazardous conditions, or to remove low branches or excessive deadwood.
Trees are pruned at the following times of year: Ornamental trees are pruned mid-April to mid-May, after the threat of frost is gone and the tree has flowered; Green ash are pruned year round, but mainly in summer; maple and birch are pruned during June/July, after leafing out; American elm/Siberian elm are pruned August 1 - April 12.

74. Warm Fall And Yard Care
Stateline yard and Garden is a weekly horticulture and gardening column written by Bruce Spangenberg, Warm Fall and yard care. November 11, 1999
http://www.urbanext.uiuc.edu/stateline/991111.html
These articles are written to apply to the northeastern corner of Illinois. Problems and timing may not apply outside of this area.
Warm Fall and Yard Care
With the unusual warmth of this fall, it seems hard to believe winter is actually very close. While the warm weather may call for a few modifications, yard and garden preparation is still basically the same at this point as any other year. Probably the one noticeable change due to the warm days is some lawns may need an additional mowing, while in other years at this stage of November grass has completely stopped growing. If your lawn has put on some significant growth since the last mowing, it is to your advantage to mow it one last time. Lawns going into winter excessively high are more prone to snow mold disease and damage from voles. Noticed any dust as you are raking leaves off the lawn? Many areas are quite dry, as it has been several weeks since significant rains came to northern Illinois. Dry soils and mild temperatures are reasons to water evergreens as needed until the ground freezes. This will help prevent winter desiccation injury. If you have not already done so, think about protecting shrubs and small trees from rabbits and mice. Rake out leaves that have accumulated around the base of low growing evergreens to help reduce cover for mice that can gnaw away bark. Once the weather gets colder and snow falls, rabbits will look to tender shrubs for food. Put up poultry wire protection before the weather turns and the damage is done.

Your fall landscape: Ten “do it now” garden tips
The days may be getting shorter and chillier, but there’s still plenty to do in and around your landscape! In fact, investing a little sweat-equity now can make next spring easier and more enjoyable, in many cases. Today, I’ll give you a few quick reminders about things you need to do before you finally call it quits for the winter. Lawn
Don’t put the mower away just yet. Take a look at your lawn and if it’s looking just a little shaggy, give it one last trim. It doesn’t need a buzz-cut but about 1 ½ inches should be okay. Leaves
Beautiful on the tree... a lot less attractive on the ground. Get out the leaf-blower, or better yet use a rake; it’s quieter and burns off some calories to make room for all that turkey in a few weeks! You need to get fallen leaves off your lawn if the grass is to come back strong next spring. Add the leaves to your compost, or shred them and use as free mulch. Weeds
Even though weeds might appear to die back as the winter approaches, that’s not a good reason to ignore them now! Nobody really enjoys the chore of weeding, but if you take the time to do so now, you will be removing literally thousands of weed seeds that would otherwise come back to haunt you next year.

  • How and when should I mow my lawn?
Back to Top Mowing is the mechanical cutting of growth from turf to maintain a nice even appearance. Most people use 21 inch rotary cut mowers. All Natural Landscape recommends mowing be done weekly during the months of March - November. As needed during the months of December - February. Mowing can be done at a height of 1 1/2 - 3 inches. All Natural cuts at 2”. Mower blades should be sharpened yearly. We sharpen our blades weekly! Grass should be cut in a pattern that will highlight the turf to drive by traffic. Patterns shall be rotated as to prevent rutting of the turf. Set sprinklers to NOT water for the two days prior to mowing as to minimize the chance of causing “ruts”. Try and avoid pausing in one area with the blade engaged, as this leaves an unsightly "toilet bowl".

    Deseret Morning News
Griggs was born in Murray and moved to his present home 11 years ago. He spent the first couple of years removing trees and shrubs, because he wanted to make a place to indulge his passion for bonsai.
Larry Sagers Darrell Griggs has a collection of about 60 bonsai trees. His collection includes several different species. "When I was young, about 19, I was very hyper and needed something to set myself back a little," Griggs said. One day he went into Ben's House of Bonsai in Murray and "got hooked."
"I spent time training under Ben, and for me the hobby was therapy. It showed me patience; it showed me it was an art and that this art was beautiful to be in."
As Griggs grew older, he continued his passion. He is a past president of the Bonsai Club of Utah and joined the Utah Ponds Society. These affiliations helped him create a place to care for his beloved trees.
His practice of this ancient art is not what you'd expect. Most bonsai gardens' trees are carefully displayed on tables with signs giving the trees' species, age and genealogy. Bot not the Griggs garden.
